Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

A great articles on WaP about throwback uniforms using nameplates of former Engineers.

http://www.withoutapeer.com/2015/11/throwback.html

As usual from WaP, a great article with lots of thought behind it. Love the history and only a few of the names mentioned did I not see in person at some time. it gets really difficult with some of the numbers since the higher ones were never needed back in the old days. Thanks for the article and thanks for posting the link here.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

So they have video of Kasdorf getting run and Bourbonnais's penalty... https://t.co/xxCYPmNCs2

If that's a slash, I'm Ralph Baer.
Careful what you wish for here. He was clearly trying to provoke the opponent which is what the ref saw. He did it by using the tip of the blade of his stick. Technically that's spearing - although a very weak one at that. Is spearing a 5 minute penalty? It may be that the ref just wanted to call it as a 2 minute infraction and so picked another stick foul. Perhaps unsportsmanlike would have made more sense though.

There has been a change in USA hockey over the past few seasons and certain penalties have become 5 and automatic game misconduct. We see the impact of this in youth hockey games where many penalties are called interference because the actual infraction would have warranted a penalty that the ref deems too severe. Typical examples are boarding, hit to the head, hit from behind. In cases where there is hard contact and clear intent, it gets called per the book. In instances where the offender had no intention to really do anything and there was no serious physical impact, the refs will call it interference instead as they have no option to call a 2 minute hit from behind.

I've had at least a few conversations with officials recently that went like this: Me: "How could it be interference when he had the puck?" Ref: "Trust me you don't want me to call it something else."

You're missing the point. If Bourbonnais did anything at all - and that was pretty thin if he did - it pales in comparison to Kasdorf getting so obviously run, and when you watch how emphatically the ref is sending off Bourbonnais when he just saw a blatant charging the goaltender and essentially shrugged, it turns the entire thing into a total farce.

No I got the point.. I'm just commenting on why the penalty was called a slash when it clearly wasn't. Look at the video and you see that the back side ref called the "slash". He was the 4th person at the scene and he called what he saw when he got there. The ref who missed the goaltender interference call was in the scrum and never saw Riley's little love taps. The call and the non-call are completely separate events, decisions made by two different refs. Getting them to act uniformly and in unison on a play is probably about as likely as getting you and Flag Dude to take up quilting together.

C'mon though... We're mostly RPI people here... do I really need to state the obvious to keep others from stating it themselves?

Uniformly abysmal.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

OK for this weekend-one down and one to go. Against Brown, come out fast, grab a lead, force them to turn over the puck and take advantage. Do not give the officials a chance to take us out of the game. Win and move on. Go Red!!!

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Bruno came from behind tonight to beat Union in overtime.

They beat RPI twice last year, pretty decisively on each occasion.

The Engineers have gone 2-0-1 in three successive games against ranked teams, but if they start to sit back and feel good about themselves, they could be in trouble tomorrow night.

I'm giddy with anticipation. For some reason this team has a feel that others haven't in recent years. Just think of where we would be if we had finished against the two Alaskas and Clarkson. LGR!

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

DrD, I saw you pointed out Melanson & Baiocco (spelling?) together at Delbarton. Paul Melanson, Drew’s Dad, introduced me to Baicco’s parents after the game. Very nice people. Good rivalry between Drew & Johnny now. BTW, Delbarton will play Albany Academy in Alb. Jan.15 @ 5pm. Too bad Cornell is in town that night. Was told Delbarton might not be that good this year as a few of their “Stars” have left to play elsewhere.

Nice Win over Eli!
Cam Hackett seems to be a pretty good backup--41 saves!

No offense but getting outshot 40-21 against SLU, a more reasonable 40-29 against Clarkson, and 43-19 tonight against Yale.......don't you think you have some cherry colored glasses on? I don't know about you but if I was Appert I would be keeping them on an even and realistic keel. Kudo's to you/they won...but most nights those shot results are going to lead to losses not W's.

Our recent results v. Brown have been poor. You'd think we'd like to do something about that tonight.

Keep following the process, Let's Go Red!

During the years they played together, that team was a steamroller. They had several kids go to Yale, Princeton and of course Drew at RPI. You are right, they are not the same team this year but have not been for a couple years now. We saw them several times and saw something special in Drew. Hard to explain what it is exactly that he does on the ice but he just sees the ice, sees the play developing and uses his speed to get to places others just cannot reach. Last night was a perfect example and it doesn't always show up on the stat sheet. Almost every shift he kept Yale from just flying up ice against us by doing something. A forecheck, breaking up a pass, scrumming against the boards, etc. When he can get a loose puck you have to be ready as he will find you if you are open.
My only concern was his upper body strength when he reached the NCAA level and it appears he has taken care of that over the past summer. Personally, i think he may have lost 1/2 step by adding some weight but in a recent interview SA feels he is faster. No question he is stronger. SA says he just needs to play the right way. I feel he also needs to be on the ice with boys who can take advantage of what he does out there which is to open up the ice, find the open man, disrupt and cause turnovers in the offensive zone and in general anticipate where his linemates should be. No, he is not Wayne Gretzky, but those are some of the things he did better than anyone in history without the hardest shot or the greatest speed. He just saw the ice and anticipated better than anyone else.
Johnny B. was more the scorer at Delbarton and brings a lot to the ice. Imagine, that high school team had them, Colten Phinney (Princeton Goalie) and about 3 others as good. Delbarton was a NJ power much like Brick High was years ago. We had State Championship teams here almost every year under coach Bob Auriemma whose grandchildren were all stars here (4 Acropolis siblings) including our own Cindy who may hold most of the RPI scoring records for the women forever. Oh, and of course Jim Dowd who spent his time up at Lake Superior State during their powerhouse years.

Yes. And for me it is a big concern. When you allow 40+ shots per game, I do not care who is in net some are going to deflect or be screened and go in. But somehow they are still undefeated through those 3 games. Can you imagine what the scores might be if we do figure out how to reverse those shot figures? BTW, it is easy to get outshot when you get penalized an extra 2 or 3 times (or more) per game over your opponent. Add up the shots when we play 5 on 5 and the discrepancy is far lower.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

I know he would never say he told you so, but our great AspyDad called the game winner when OT started.
