So Union gets the benefit. He really should miss the game which CCT plays in Troy.

They could have just waited until after the Union game to suspend the guy considering the SLU/Clarkson matchup next Friday night. What were they thinking? ... Just being sarcastic btw! :p:)

I have to say, though I’m not a huge SA believer I believe he & staff did a fantastic job this weekend. So many injuries & an always tough North Country trip & come home with 3pts. Well done.

4-4-1 record. Wins against #1, #15, #18 & a tie /#17 (all ATT). Let’s see if we get any love from the Pollsters.

Huge night for RPI and Frosh Goalie. I thought we would get killed tonight.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

For the football fans. RPI came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Springfield 17-14 to keep their small hopes of an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championship tournament.

If anybody's ever wondered about the effect of TV commercials and replay reviews on big-time college football, consider this.

I listened to the end of the RPI - Springfield game on WRPI. It ended at 2:19 PM.

Ten minutes later, I went out and started my car. The radio was tuned to a station that was carrying the broadcast of the Penn State - Northwestern football game (in Central Pennsylvania on an autumn Saturday, it can be hard to find a radio station that isn't carrying the Penn State football game ). So that it could fit into ESPN's afternoon schedule, the Penn State game had started at 11 AM Central time, i.e., the same time as the RPI football game that started at noon Eastern time.

Ten minutes after the RPI game had ended, there were still five minutes left to play in the third quarter of the Penn State game.

And we did not get much help from the officials. Called for 3 more penalties than SLU and one was a few seconds into the game, one was early in the crucial third period, and one was very late in the third period of a tie game. I suppose if the OT went longer we could have expected to be called for a penalty in OT. Although not quite as bad a job by the zebras as we got the night before, I have seen this kind of thing virtually every year on the North Country trip.

I watched the women's game on RPI-TV. I couldn't believe that a team wearing Cherry and White got the better of the penalty calls.

Don't want to rant on the officials but I can honestly say.....all season long we have been on the short end of the officiating stick. We go out of conference and Hockey East and other conference refs are homers. You come to the ECAC and an out of conference team comes to our barn......and the officials favor the out of conference team. You may argue you didn't get your fair share of calls.....but RPI dodged a major bullet when Ohrvall hit from behind, into the boards AND AFTER THE WHISTLE. To come out of that with two minutes each was a horrible call. If you are going to take Sweetman for retaliating......then you have to give Ohrvall the double minor or 5 minutes he deserved.
My only other request is that you please return the silver platter we gave you tonight when we come down to Houston later in the year. It would be kind of you to return it when we play down there. Thanks.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Much better job in the circle tonight.......RPI - Faceoffs
# Player W L
26 Mark Miller 12 5
14 Riley Bourbonnais 6 7
7 Zach Schroeder 4 7
18 Travis Fulton 3 2
27 Jake Wood 1 4
23 Lou Nanne 0 2
TOTALS 26 27

From behind and very, very close to in the head no less!

And one of the tripping penalties on us was a clear dive. Right in front of me.

I'll give you I thought the Öhrwall hit would be five and game. That being said, your player a few minutes clearly targeted the head, they even announced CTH, and by rule, should be 5 and game.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

The call according to the PA was unintentional contact to the head.Color me concerned that ECAC refs get the responsibility of determining intent.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

We took 3 out of 4 points in the North Country and all you can talk about is the referees.
We now have 7 of 8 points in the ECAC and were just one soft goal from 8 for 8.
Our freshman goalie who had no ice time coming into this weekend play a very good game in his first start and was not too bad in his first appearance on Friday. He was very nervous and it showed, but he hung in there.
Also, we played these two games without two of our best forwards. In the past, we would have just folded. This team is different than any team that SA has had since he got here.
I don't know if the players just finally bought into his system or he finally gave in to the players he has and changed his system, but it is different.
As for the referees, they were incompetent in both games, and we should be used to that. And it is not going to change in the future.
We need to concentrate on our game and stop the stupid undisciplined obvious penalties.
Play the game we have been playing for the last two weekends, and we will over achieve for a change. JMO

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

As WaP noted on Twitter, if you complain about the refs after a loss, it can be dismissed as sour grapes. If you complain about the refs after a win, there might actually be something wrong with how the games are being called.

It's certainly nice that we find ourselves 3-0-1 after four games, but it's still only four games out of 22. The season is a marathon, and anything can happen. We've started out a season 4-0 in league play, only to find a meltdown later in the season. Sure, we can win; we've seen it plenty of times. Can we win consistently? That has been the program's Achilles' heel for many years, even in 2010-11.

He was the first star. My daughter noted his nerves, especially in the 1st half of the 2nd period when it looked like it was just a matter of time before he folded. But he didn't; like you said, he hung in there until you guys took it to us with the 2 quick goals. I think all 3 of our goals would have been tough for anyone to stop, so there's no shame there.

Just made one small change in your post (about the penalties). I agree with all of this. Either after 10 years of recruiting, SA finally has the players who can play his system (doubtful) or he has changed his system to suit the players he has (possibly) or we have players who can play the game well enough without doing any of the above (my choice). Friday we should have won but as you pointed out gave up a late soft goal that you just cannot do when defending a lead late in the game. Saturday we should have lost. We gave SLU just too many chances and gifts. We mad so many bad passes and attempts to get the puck out of our zone that they should have had 5 more goals. Often we just skated towards the puck and waived meekly at it or shot it so softly that their point men could keep it in easily. But we played like a team that just did not fold the tent and go home. I particularly liked that line that scored the second goal to put us ahead and their effort and then they kept the puck in the zone in OT to notch the winner. SLU is a very accomplished team with rock solid defensemen but that line of MHM gave them fits all night. Forechecking and keeping them in their own zone, stopping them in the neutral zone and forcing them to reorganize the rush, and as mentioned, keeping the pressure on late in the third period and in OT.

On another note-just checked the individual statistics posted on our own website for the game last night. I think there might be a couple of inconsistencies in that they credited Milos Bubela with a SOG in the first period (which would have had to come from along way out) and they gave Drew Melanson a net +4 for the game and i did not see him out there for one of the 4 goals (although he most definitely was on the ice for 3 with a goal and an assist).

edit-Sorry, on second look (actually Jenny told me) Melanson was indeed a +4 for the night. it is just not often we have a player get that big a positive number.
