Perry Laskaris, who is apparently traveling with the team, liked it.

Taking the great circle route to Princeton. Good idea.
Happy news on the poll. Now we have to keep playing well to ascend.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

From what I saw on the Root Sports (Pittsburgh cable) telecast, the guys saw a very entertaining hockey game, particularly the overtime, which was pretty much nonstop end-to-end action.

Traditionalist that I am, I prefer sticking with 5-on-5 hockey, but I wonder whether RPI's players might be inclined to favor the NHL-style 3-on-3 after watching it tonight.

3v3 is terrible. No flow to the game at all.

Forget that shootout crap. Either call it a tie, or keep playing 5v5 until there's a winner.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Unless my memory is playing tricks on me, the winning goal was scored subsequent to the 5-minute mark of overtime on that evening in December 1968. If the game were played under today's rules with overtime limited to 5 minutes, the game would have ended in a tie.

Yes, 6:09 according to my scorecard.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

A bit surprised that they are practicing again in Pittsburgh before heading to Princeton.

I assume that "office" is really "off-ice".

FWIW

Jake Luthi stopped by to meet the current squad. I guess he no longer lives in Alaska.

Disagree strongly. Prefer it far more than shootout. Watched 3 on 3 on 12/31 - Adk. vs. Reading (Bergin, Curadi and K Mac) HIGHLY entertaining hockey...great passing, shots and goaltending...

I think 3 x 3 deserves a chance...

IMHO, 2nd-best possibility after a tie. Regular-season ties are perfectly fine with me. Shootouts are last on my list.

The alternative, five minutes of 4 x 4 followed (if necessary) by five minutes of 3 x 3 is too long.

I liked the format used in the A last year: 7 minutes starting with 4x4 and moving to 3x3 after the first whistle past 3:30. I don't know if the huge drop in shootouts they saw was more due to the extra two minutes of play time or the 3x3, but it was pretty impressive.

All of that said, I'd be fine with 5:00 of 5x5 and ties. It's too bad that having continuous OT in the regular season would probably kill the players.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Guarantee the MNM line would like it.....though 1 would probably sit for a D-man.
For some reason, our coach doe snot want to keep the MNM line together whether it is 5x5 or 4x4 or on the power play. When they are together, it just seems there is a flow and chemistry that is lost when they are split up. But perhaps he sees something i am missing. I think we have as much or as little talent as many other of the top teams but along with so many other jobs, one thing the coach has to find is the right combinations that makes proper use of the individual talents present. Certain players just are better when they have others on the ice that make a good fit for their style. Some skate faster, pass more quickly, look for the open man whiole other try tohold onto the puck longer, pass later and just get started a bit slower. Those traits are hard if not impossible to change. I just do not think players that are now around 21 years old can change their play enough to fit a mold created for them and play differently. My theory, and it is only that, is you find players who play well together and keep them together (barring injury or illness) simply because it works. Sometimes there is no obvious reason why that works but when it does, stick with it. JMHO

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Since this is also the RPI @ Princeton thread, anyone coming down here tomorrow? Weather will be perfect. Cool (mid 30's) and absolutely clear. Traffic will be miserable, after all this is NJ and the most congested state in the country. Hope our boys are not bus tired after this long trip. Princeton has a habit of coming out very fast at home and jumping on teams quickly with a ferocious forecheck. Our defense will have to make quick decisions and get the puck up ice even quicker than usual early.

I'm not sure it's a problem with those three so much as it is a problem with the other nine. In a fairly defensive league such as the ECAC, if you're a one line team, you see their best defending players there, and if you don't get through that, you're hosed. I would think the coaching staff wants more than one solid punch when it comes to the attack, preferably two lines that can generate offence. This is why a team like UNH is having so much trouble this year. Sure, they have one great line, but what beyond that?

I watched it for one game with the Sabres, and there was no flow to the OT at all. Nothing was really generated from it, not even any decent scoring chances. 4v4 is understandable as you can get some good flow there, but there just isn't enough with the 3v3 to be able to do much of anything.

EDIT: I will give you, though, that the skills competition does not belong.

Very true, but the MNM line does NOT contain our scorer as of now. RB would be on another line as would Milos. We would have at least 2 very good lines of different character and perhaps most of a third line that was quite offensive. Rarely can a team match up more than with 1 or 2 lines against that. Only the true power house programs can have 3 or 4 great lines and 2 or 3 pairs of superb defensemen. if we can get 3 pressure lines together and 2 sets of solid D, we become a very tough team to play.
