Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Is anyone going to start the game thread? I won't since we lost last week with me starting it.
All set Ralph. I get the feeling that some folks are protecting their records. Or maybe it's just a growing sense of "Appert-thy" this year. Hopefully they can get off strongly and raise the interest level. I see good things from Kasdorf ahead but will we play and coach smart enough to turn it into wins? The question marks for this season are worthy of making the Riddler an honorary mascot. Not the Jim Carrey one... the campy original one though!

Maybe I should stop keep track of thread-starting stats.

.....I tend to lean on his 3rd sentence.

In case anyone doesn't know what the thread title refers to:

Thanks to Josefine Hansen for making it six.

I thought you were going to tell us all about a new amusement park opening off Burdett Avenue. (Troy's Great Adventure?):)

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

You're the doctor; aren't you supposed to be telling us that? :p *cough cough*

Nothing was apparent on the Slap Schotts radio show this morning in terms of that.

Difficult to make diagnoses form 215 miles away. I do wonder how we seem to get more injuries in practice than in games. Injuries are common in all levels of hockey but we seem to get both long lasting ones and just some of the oddest assortment of things.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

How well we respond tomorrow after the loss last night will tell the story of how things will go this year. The number one team in the country is coming into our house, yeah the team is banged up, but lets hope the boys put forth a good effort. I look forward to the challenge.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

We have played one official game and probably have the most injured players in the country. What is wrong with this picture? It seems to happen every year. Also, we have a lot of talent on this team, as much if not more than most had thought. Yet the same problems plague us year. Just look at the faceoff numbers from last night. Why is that not a fixable thing? over the past many years we have had lots of different players taking faceoffs. Why do we not win more of those? There are several basic things like this that we consistently do poorly. i wonder how much our results and standing would change if we were just able to address one of these deficiencies. Cliches aside, is this what the coach is talking about when he mentions playing our game, our way?
I watched the entire game yesterday. We played a very strong third period and deserved to get at least one on the board. But the first 30-35 minutes were painful and too similar to efforts shown previously over the past few years. The third period we showed we actually did belong on the ice against a very good team. The first two periods led to a 3-0 score that could have been 3 or 4 goals worse if not for some incredibly good goaltending. If we play BC like we did the first two periods last night, they will need a calculator to total the SOGs and the goals. If we play like the third period, well, strange things can happen. This is a good group of boys (as we have virtually every year) with a lot of talent but something is sorely lacking that is keeping them from reaching their potential. Last night on the scores thread it was mentioned what the definition of insanity can be. I totally agree.

All legitimate points, DrD. Still, this is one game, from a banged up team, on the road against a very good team. Hard as it is to watch, let's give this squad a chance to get healthy and play 8 or 10 games before we make a judgement on the season. Face offs and special teams aside, staying healthy has seemed to be the biggest challenge the past 3-4 years. In August we thought we had 16 solid forwards. Last night only 11 were able to answer the bell. You have to believe/ hope that everything improves when even a couple of those guys return.

We seem to recruit players also who are injured before they arrive at RPI, like Nanne and Tironese.

Watched BC play Army last night (nice to see Buccigross drop the ceremonial puck as well as a very large BC crowd). While BC is a great team and the final outcome may never have been in doubt, Army played BC relatively even through the first period by purely out hustling BC and playing smart, a trait the Cadets of late are known for. I think RPI can give BC a good game if RPI can do three things well, out hustle BC, protect Kasdorf by keeping BC from the front of the net, and not taking bad penalties. RPI will not out talent BC. By early in the second period last night BC, in what was a tight game, just kept crashing the net and wearing down the Cadets and their goalie who played well despite the final score (5-1). Army, in their effort to protect their goalie, started taking one bad penalty after another after the whistle. The end result was the BC talent just took over and that was that.

RPI does not have the talent that BC has, but maybe, with better wheels and heart, and a smart strategy they could steal an early season game from the Eagles. It's a tall order but crazier things have happened.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Is the game streamed on RPI.tv? Is it free?

I don't see an event created yet (i.e. not sure if it's a TV game or not). If it's RPITV, though, it will be free. You can also look up RPITV on Youtube and find it there, if you want to watch with a Roku box. Assuming RPI-TV's working the game, of course.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

OK thought I’d share some thoughts on last night..

I saw more positives than negatives overall. The two biggest positives for me were JK in net and seeing the team get stronger as the game went on. I am not a big fan of teams that start strong and fade. I hope that Appert has decided not to try to win by skating at 110% speed at the start of the first. It just rarely works.

On the negative side, there were three things that stood out to me: UML hemming us in during that first period (I said don’t go crazy at the start.. I didn’t say take the first 10 minutes off), face-offs and poor communication/connections between players. The first was no doubt aided by the quality of the opponent. The second is an on-going story. Hey Seth.. one of the greatest face-off men in the history of the game, and a recent hall of famer inductee is an alum. Why not give him a call and ask him to send a video or drop by a practice if possible? The 3rd also seems like a common theme on games I’ve seen over the years. I know it’s only game 1 but… you really can’t have your right D wheel around your own net, get to the left dot and then flip a pass that somehow hits your left D in the back at the blue line. And by the way.. what the heck was Wilson doing at the Blue line with his back to the play when his D partner was still low in the zone? Looked like a pee wee C team play and led to a quick 3 on 1 on us.

Getting back to the positives though, full credit to Appert for immediately calling a time out after the just mentioned play. From there on out the team played well. And no one better than Kasdorf who was brilliant I thought. The first two goals were at the other end but the first looked like a weird carom and the 2nd a PP wrap that might have been tipped by a D stick (and was reviewed too – not sure why). The 3rd was a no chance goal on a circle to circle pass where our overtired PK D hung him out to dry – right after the PK forwards hung them out to dry by not getting the puck deep after taking it into the neutral zone.

I saw progress from a few players. Gillespie looks faster to me – perhaps he has tried to change his physique to more of a hockey players? Bubela looked very strong, just tough to get off the puck. And he played hard the whole game. I take back my comment from August that the team would be fine without him – if he plays like this he will score a lot of points. I saw more confidence and potential from Reno, Bell and Praps. They each look like they are ready to really contribute on O although all of them at one point or another made some ill-advised soft passes, especially on the PP where Praps got too cute at least twice, maybe more.
Didn’t see much of the Frosh as Clary and Moore were on the 4th line and saw only a handful of shifts. Orhvahl looks to have some skill – hopefully he adjusts to the game speed and can start contributing soon.

Overall.. I’m cautiously not unoptimistic. And I wonder whether we may have played the harder game of the weekend already. I know BC is always good but UML returned most of their scoring from last season and they were at home. They are also likely underrated in the polls and BC is possibly a bit overrated at #1 – BC always get the votes this time of year whether warranted or not. That doesn't mean we will win - be I think we can compete.

Re: RPI Hockey 2015 - 2016:: Six Flags Over the HFH

Fridgen had the same problem with faceoffs in the 1995 season. Devoted significant practice time to faceoffs before the ecac semi final against Colgate. I think RPI won over 60% of the faceoffs beat colgate and princeton in the finals. No reason not to invite Oates up for an honorary degree or something and have him drop by a practice.
