FF: I have tried going over each game this year and looking at the actual time in minutes spent with a 1 man advantage, a 2 men advantage, 1 man shorthanded, and 2 men shorthanded. I am still in the process of getting the numbers together. It takes me a bit longer these days than in the past. The numbers do seem at first glance to change quite a bit once I actually calculate the penalty minutes instead of just the penalties. Several times this year (and i am fairly sure in previous years) there have been games in which an official (not naming names, but in the past Kotyra was notorious for this) would call a bunch more penalty minutes on one team, and then sort of even up the minutes called with a couple penalties called at the 20 minute mark of the third period(including a major or misconduct or two). As you point out, i was not so upset with the number of penalties called on us this year(we deserved the great percentage of them) but i was amazed when I saw how few power plays we received. When i compared the actual minutes of each, it got even worse. There is not one of the other 11 ECAC teams that is even close to us in that regard.
Now, before anyone gets all worked up about this. With the success rate of our power play, all of this may have ended up meaning nothing. But I did find the numbers a bit staggering.

Jimmy was one of the all time nice guys. Quick story, TB and I went to Colgate one year and it was snowing like a banshee, we lingered at the rink for a little while and when we went outside Jimmy was out cleaning the snow off our truck. Jimmy told great stories about his days in the O. Patty is and was a quality kid, I hope all his dreams come true.

I was not really sure what i was looking for by opening up this discussion but my senses tell me that something is just out of whack. It probably would make little difference but i would love to see the penalties compared not in numbers of penalties, but in actual minutes of extra man time versus actual minutes of short handed time. That would necessitate taking out a bunch of last minute third period calls that officials sometimes make to have the final stat sheet show that the penalty calls were more even. Calling 12 minutes on a team in the first 59 minutes of play and then evening the count by calling the other team for 4 minutes with seconds left to play does not show up on most radar but it does not make things equal.

Jenny is such a wonderful gal. Still have fond memories of sharing some adult beverages and dinner with you fine folks. This post of course was half in jest but I do give you credit for your honesty about the officiating. You been on this even before I joined the thread. I thought last year it was a little better but it has declined again this year. Paul Stewart is getting paid to work in Russia an he has no incentive to make it better. Personally Steve Hagwell is a pleasant guy but he is not a hockey guy and is not running the league.. Paul is. One poster just noted the secrecy around discipline. Last year's non suspension of Bennett and then suspension adds to the perception that there are favorites and a bias is there. Again, thanks for speaking truth to power.

Did something happen to Jim? I enjoyed watching Pat playing in his first Capital's camp with Jim.

No Jimmy is doing fine. He is one of my all time favorite people. He is also a astute hockey observer he taught me a lot. I'll give you 2 examples He told me it was a shame things didn't work out with josh Jooris because he was going to be an NHL player some day and he is and he also told me that Greg Carey at SLU was going to score goals by the truck load and he did. Nothing was better than watching a game with Jimmy it was like going to a clinic. Patty is a class kid and his future is unlimited Jimmy raised him right !!! BTW Jimmy was quite the player himself he scored over 80 points 1 year in the OHL as a defenseman and put some time in the NHL with the Islanders.
