Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi
The road from putting out a football recruiting video to putting a viable Division I football team on the field can be very, very long indeed.
In the late 1980's, I was working for an insurance company in Philadelphia. My office was right next to the office of one of the company's vice presidents. I knew that the VP had played football for Columbia in the late '50's or early '60's.
One day a couple of Columbia's assistant football coaches, with a video cameraman, came to visit our VP. And they filmed a clip that obviously was intended to be included in a football recruiting video.
I could overhear everything that was said and I'll tell you, our VP gave a pretty darn good performance. By the time he was done, I was thinking that if, by the time my son (who was 1 year old at the time) graduated from high school, he showed the ability to play football at the Ivy League level, I would be very happy to see him go to Columbia.
Unfortunately, neither that video nor anything else Columbia has done in the more than 25 years that have elapsed since it was filmed has resulted in any dramatic improvement in the school's football fortunes. In 2014, the Lions went 0-10, with five of those losses coming by margins of more than 40 points.
