Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Since several people have emailed me, here is my response.

"No, I investigated that many years ago. We are somehow distantly related, but not on the male line, since that is predicted by our DNA tests. That result occurs for most European Jews due to the Jewish population in Germany having been reduced to a few hundred at the time of the Crusades. BTW, his original name was Rolf, not Ralph. I exchanged emails with one of his children a couple of years ago."

Cheers to our Ralph, let's celebrate another day on the sunny side of the grass....

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

I thought your name was really Rolf and that you used Ralph as a pseudo to throw everyone off? Is your DNA recorded someplace? I have always been afraid to have mine determined since I think way back in my family there might have been a Doberman Pinscher in there someplace.;)

It's at FTDNA, the company that did the testing. I certainly can't figure out anything from the data myself, but they run comparisons with everyone else who tested. The autosomal test on everything except the X and Y chromosomes, as I said, is pretty worthless for European Jews (although it does predict that I am 100% European Jewish). It does predict well a few known third/fourth cousins who also took the test but then there are a few thousand others who it also says are related.

I did have a known fourth cousin on my Baer side take a Y chromosome test and it predicted that most likely we were about a half dozen generations more distantly related, but ...

Considering my size, a Chihuahua is more likely than a Doberman. :)

I should mention this here since I mentioned it already on the Lodge thread in the Café, but I am going under the knife on Wednesday for a hernia operation. So you won't see me here at least during the day on Wednesday. I am not a happy camper about this. Now that I am retired I have too much time to worry about it.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, from one landsman to another. I've always enjoyed your insightful posts and hope for thousands more in the future!

Size is one of the reasons I was wondering if he might have been your dad or uncle... There was a picture of him with GWB and he is clearly not a tall man either. Short guys.. same name... old enough to be your dad... lived in NYC...

Even if he isn't a close relative, having someone with your same name pass is at least a little disconcerting. Thankfully though he wasn't killed by a cyborg with an Austrian accent!

As long as it is uncomplicated, you should be back posting about 10 minutes after the Propofol wears off. And you should feel about as good as you ever have felt after a power nap.(Just make sure that you are put to sleep by an anesthesiologist who has been properly trained in the use of it-unlike the fellow who the King of Pop used);) Good luck and stop worrying, you will be fine!!!

That is eye-opening. I was aware of various clashes such as the vote of no confidence, but I had no idea of the breadth of scope. :(

I remember the no confidence vote, and then SAJ immediately disbanded the faculty senate.

Actually, according to this article, Q-Pac's President is #2: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-...-at-rpi-leads-private-college-presidents.html

It is indeed disconcerting, especially since as I wrote I am having an operation on Wednesday.

I heard of him first when I was in grad school when an article was written in some magazine or newspaper stating that his contribution to video games was being overlooked.

Thanks, Doc. It will take a bit longer to get home than that, and I don't have a smart phone that I could use to post. (And even if I did, I am not supposed to bring valuable with me.)

Good luck Ralph, look forward to you rejoining us quickly and posting unherniated...

People using pseudonyms? Who would do such a thing?

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

Ralph's head is actually closer to the surface of the ground by being alive than he would be if he were dead. :D
