Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

to comment on part of Senna's Post #952, yes, I have noticed that with Greg B. & the youth player....glad that others have noticed. It can also be pointed out how Luke, Haggs, Diesel, Matt Neal....(may be others that I haven't seen) toss pucks over the glass after the pre-game skate to young kids...usually to an adult, to give to the kids they point to. These are fine young men that Seth brings to this program and don't forget their parents who've brought them up to be the men they are. I'm sure other programs can lay claim to the same but this is the one I care about.

RPI Part V: Dumb resets.

(It makes more sense than you think it does.)

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

And my two cents for the next thread, being that we reside in Troy;

RPI Hockey V: The Team That Launched A Thousand Wins

I like that! Unlike (ahem) certain other smart-alecks, I'm very confident we'll get there before the end of this calendar year! :)

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

He certainly did. A pretty flagrant charge and leap into the player's head with a shoulder and elbow. Something we had seen before years ago but now doing it in the NHL.
Yup. I saw it on replay as I sipped an adult beverage following RPI's glorious victory. Also saw the quote from Zach Rinaldo (who before he was sent up, was Adirondack's Instigator in Chief in Glens Falls last year)

Can someone direct me to a post or site listing what we think RPI's '13-'14 schedule might look like ?? Trying to do some planning.... thanks

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

I know a bit late considering the games were over the weekend and seems like all of RPI Nation is following and posting at this point....I can't be happier for these boys and this program. As much as we all expected more earlier in the season, this is getting a bit beyond what we had imagined.

Some thoughts - first have to mention Burgdorfer. Any one else notice how he really goes out of his way with the youth player they announce with the starting line up, making sure the kid is cool and getting him settled and organized. The sign of a man is taking responsibility for others, and I thought a magnificent reflection of him. As he flys under the radar a bit, what about Matt Neal ? 2nd on the team in scoring, not a penalty minute this year, and just always involved and leading the play. His lines have constantly been switched up since the beginning of the year and just doesn't matter. Incredible consistency. I am still LOVING the Rogic-Fulton-Miller line. Speed and intensity and never quitting. Then you also have Bubela and Diesel now playing huge and we are no longer focused on our "top" guys from the beginning of the year like Laliberte and Haggerty. Some other thoughts - our defense and goaltending have been outstanding. We are now scoring the 3+ a game that I think Dr D and I have messaged about for years. We are also scoring first and staying on top of teams (this is what I thought Union did as well as anyone). We looked simply fantastic against Clarkson...they weren't even in our league in the first 2 periods. St Lawrence scares me because they are so fast, but again we played into them rather than trying to hold on and that's the confidence difference right now. These kids believe, and that is an incredibly powerful thing.

Finally, had the chance to speak with Aspydad for quite a bit before Fridays game. I sincerely hope that he doesn't disappear from posting. My father also always said "take the credit and the blame for everything you do", and all the credit to him in that he never wavered on the team or the staff. Would be nice to see all those who were heard when things looked bleak to also be tanking note of where we are at today and all that has been accomplished.
Couldnt agree more Senna. Matt Neal is a smart, SMART hockey player.... I hesitate to single anyone out because they are playing as a TEAM right now. .. SO fun to watch. I do have to compliment Brogg Higgs on his shorty...a HUGE goal in a tight game...sheer determination. Hope the boys stay hungry in the off week, are able to heal a few dings and come out flying in the 2nd round! GO RED

You didn't attend the BRF!? :D

It was posted here a week or so later.

I am impressed that Neal's scoring has improved since leaving Haggerty and JL.

That SHG by Brogg Hicks ;) was indeed beautiful.

What was really weird was that I saw shadows of the same play while watching Buffalo play the Rangers last night. Sabres take a couple of penalties (one a major), Rangers get a couple of goals, but then Nathan Gerbe got that clutch shorty. Although Buffalo only salvaged a point, it reminded me a lot of Higgs' play. Hopefully RPI inspires a pro team looking to get back into the hunt.

I know, weird tangent.

Bordering on a non-sequitur even. I wonder if Mark Johnson was dreaming that one day Brock Higgs, unborn at the time, would score a shortie to beat St. Lawrence right after he beat Tretiak with <1 sec to go in 1980?

Since we're talking about pros and tangents... anyone else see that Kane shootout goal against Detroit? I saw a squirt kid do the exact same thing in a skills contest during a Can Am tournament last year in Placid. At the time I thought to myself that it was borderline unsportsmanlike. Now that a pro did it I wonder if there will be a rule change requiring the shooter to shoot within X seconds after crossing the blue line. And one more thing... I wonder whether it shouldn't have counted. I thought that the rule states that the puck has to keep moving forward. Because Kane was moving so slowly, there was a point when he pulled it back with his back hand where the puck was clearly moving backward.

I always thought that on a penalty shot(the forerunner of these shootouts-which I detest to decide a team game) the player had to keep moving forward and could not stop and pick a spot and then shoot. I am not aware that any rule has been changed but the officials are giving the scorers all sorts of leeway. Probably because the goalies in the NHL are just so darn good. In my first 50+ years of watching NHL games I think I got to see perahps 10 live penalty shots. Now I get to see them as shootouts virtually every night. Sort of changes my excitement level for it. I am just so glad that we still have the Stanley Cup games played to a conclusion. Thank goodness we will not see any of that in the ECAC or NCAA playoffs.:)

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Coach Appert had an extended conversation with the slu coach after the game anyone know what that was about?

Thanks Turk - its always so good to speak with you at games because you and several others here actually get it. I'm at the point of not posting because of people that don't seem to do anything else and clearly have never played nor understand the game. For years I have posted about how these are great kids from great families playing for ndividuals who I would want my kids associated with and who I'm a better person for having met. I include you and several others in this group. Thank you

No different than my last post, I include you in this group and sincererly hope that we are more connected going forward. You clearly kn ow this game and consistently provide valuable insight. I as well was so very happy for Higgs. What a goal. Screamed of pride and commitment and team - and never ever quitting. Given his injury, to come back and in a game like that against SLU to score in that manner when needed most by the team is what I'm loving about these kids right now. May I say the same about Rogic ? Hope to see ou soon and thank you too.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

I just ran a few scenarios for PWR, for the next week. Here's what I think we're rooting for:

Michigan over NM - to drop NM as a TUC. This removes a losing comparison for RPI and removes a bunch of TUC wins from teams near us. It helps Wisconsin and earns them at least another matchup, but it's the lesser evil.
Minnesota over Merrimack - probably knocks Mr out as a TUC, which hurts BU, Alaska, and Union. BU would lose a matchup that they currently win against Minn State.
Colorado College over Michigan Tech - If CC drops as a TUC, Wisconsin sheds a 0-2 TUC record and wins vs. RPI. Let's keep CC as a TUC.
Mass-Lowell over Providence - Providence is too close for comfort. Plus, the extra TUC wins for ML would flip a matchup and Alaska would lose. Finally, we don't want Pv anywhere near to winning the HEA league title, since they'd take an auto-bid that would otherwise go to a team in the top 16 anyway.
UNH over Maine, BC over UVM - either would keep Pv from winning the HEA.
St. Cloud over Wisconsin - With 2 wins here I think Wisconsin would win the matchup against RPI.

SLU over Colgate - We went 2-0 against each. Whichever team wins becomes a TUC. Whichever loses drops off, never to return, so it's an even trade. But if Colgate wins they would be so precariously a TUC, they would likely drop off in the next round, leaving us with neither. SLU could lose out and remain a TUC.
Cornell over Princeton. At 1-1, Cornell is a marginal benefit to us as a TUC. If they win they stay TUC, if they lose, they drop off and do not come back. We'd rather see Princeton disappear, rather than move toward TUC.
Dartmouth over Harvard? Dartmouth gains PWR ground in this scenario but doesn't pass us. But I think they create some mayhem for other teams.
Brown over Clarkson. If Brown loses, we lose our 1-0-1 record as a TUC. We want them to win in 2, not 3, because they are so close to the edge.

I guess if it happens like that, we would play Brown in Troy. RPI could beat Brown without knocking them out of TUC, which could contribute as much as a 3-0-1 TUC win record (optimistically).

RPI92: Thanks for all of that-there are so many scenarios still left aht my brain has overheated. I will compare what you posted to what WaP has and of course others who post here and then use a fire extinguisher on my head.;)

Nice work. Thanks. That would be Umass over Merrimack.
