RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

I was looking at the boxscore and noticed that Iles got an assist on the Cornell's SHG. Didn't we give the puck to them?

Also I note that Bailen got a -4 for the game. He was on the ice for all of Cornell's goals and not for Fulton's. I wonder what the record is for being "perfect" in that regard.

Dolan had his shot blocked on the SHG and it was a clean break. Iles should not have gotten an assist.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Agree completely, but we have to win. If we win this evening, the loss vs. Cornell won't hurt and could actually benefit the team psychologically.

We are now #23 in the PWR.

On the scoreboard it read 4-1. Very misleading-we had plenty of chances and gave up 2 that we normally would not have. Cornell deserved the win-they took advantage of 2 mistakes on our part. Very important to bounce back tonight-and not let this become a new trend. I disagree on one thing though-I don't often find any way that losing is helpful psychologically when it ends a long unbeaten streak. The boys will just have to shake this one off-just be glad this stuff happened last night in the regular season and not in a playoff game.

Also deceiving-he is normally on the power play so of course he is likely to get a minus for a short handed goal. And he is also one player you want on the ice when you have pulled your goaltender-so again-he would be on the ice more than not for an empty net goal. But -4 is not a good number in any case.

It's not a psychological help. It's a help from the perspective of exposing mistakes we have been making all year so that we can hope to fix them in practice. Tonight's team, probably with exception of the fourth line, Kazzy, and the BRO, played like what I saw in Hanover. Those I mentioned played their hearts out for 60 minutes. At the beginning of the game we were completely out of the control. We couldn't handle the puck, had no flow as we were constantly running into each other, and making the mistakes we had been making at the beginning of the season, especially playing right into Cornell's game plan. Eventually the team settled down, but we never played our game, and by the time we started to, it was over.

It doesn't matter any longer, though. Today's a new day. It's a fresh start. What happened last night (with possible exception to who SA is going to choose to dress) means absolutely nothing. This is a test of resiliency. Do we bounce back and take it to Colgate, or do we begin a late February meltdown?

There's the I didn't get the guys ready to play Seth quote , we were out competed. Let's hope that loss is a silver lining for another 7 ga,e win streak and ecac title

Someone actually hit you with an egg at a game ???

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

Here's the bottom line on last night.

1) Cornell scored 2 goals on spot mistakes - Bailen turnover and Dolan catching an edge. That's bad luck that led to favorable matchups for the Big Red that they converted. A third was an empty netter. Hard to fault Kasdorf on any of the goals except maybe the second one.

2) Team showed resiliency down two and then three goals. Not sure we've seen them playing better from behind this year.

3) There are two teams on the ice, and Cornell doesn't lose a lot of two-goal leads. The Cornell PK was outstanding last night.

4) Team still controls its own destiny for 2nd place, just like they did last night. Had the good fortune of having a lot of other games cut our way (eh, FF?).

5) Like I said, can't win them all.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part IV: Not A Finished Product Yet

One thing I will say, though: I am SO happy that Travis Fulton was finally rewarded for the hard work he has put forth all year. He hasn't played much, and whenever he is on the ice, he is just so focused and determined, and him, along with the rest of the fourth line, the BRO, and Kasdorf, were some of the big moments in that game. I hope we see the energy line start tonight, because they're the true leaders out there for Engineer hockey.

I am not a psychologist or anything close, but I have read many times that the tie vs. LSSU in 1985 that ended our winning streak got a weight off the team's shoulders.

We were at that tie-that series if you recall was just total goals. We had won big the night before. Once the second night was a close game-Coach MA just shut us down. We played more defensive than I had seen all year-and i had seen most every game. We had our most potent scorers dropping back to our own blue line and settled for whatever result as long as we did not give up enough goals to overcome the previous night. Whoever wrote that stuff about that tie took a weight off the team's shoulders either was not at the game, did not know what they were saying, or concocted a nice little story. Trust me-If we had to win 2 out of 3 in that series instead of total goals-we would have scored more than 3 in that game. That team was on an incredible roll-and could care less about the win that night. They were focused on the big prize that eluded them the year before.

I am missing something or I wasn't clear. I do realize that it was a two-game total-goal series. After that tie, the winning streak was no more (although the non-losing streak remained), so the streak was off their shoulders, athough of course they had to beat UMD anyway.

100% correct, Doc. I was at that game myself and it was a 2-game total goals series (just like it was the year before against North Dakota). We won 7-3 on Friday night and once we scored a couple of goals, we were just sitting back preventing LSSU from an all out scoring attack, something that we hadn't done all season. They had enough pride that they didn't want to lose their final home game in front of their fans, but winning that second game wasn't really necessary. We had shirts that said "Destination Detroit", and that's what the goal was all along after the major disappointment the year before.

Jenny and i was staying in the old Holiday Inn down in town. After the first night we had dinner there (the food for a few years there was actually incredibly good) with the parents of one of the players for LSSU. They pretty much knew already that they could not outscore us by 4 the second night and resigned themselves to it. But they said they were coming back for the following year for the RPI Xmas tournament and we would meet for dinner again. (actually the tourney was held in November around Thanksgiving time). We had a great time with them, and with the coach of Alaska Anchorage-Brush Christiensen. We beat LSSY then 3-2 but you could see they were on the upswing and we were not.
