Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

Tonight's game. Thought we came out and dominated the 1st period even though we did not score a goal! We had a few good chances and did not capitalize on them. Not sure what happened to the team I saw in the 1st period but they did not come out in the 2nd. 3rd period we started to go back to the team that played in the 1st. Defense played a lot better than the night before. I wonder it that was because they were worried having a freshman goalie in between the pipes. Kasdorf for the most part looked good to me in net. I know a few might disagree with me on this but I did think he gave up a lot of rebounds. Actually the 1st goal in my thoughts were his fault as he should have smothered the puck and not given up the rebound on the initial shot that eventually led to the goal. Having said that I do think we need to start him and ride him out going forward as he seems to have, as I have said before, a bigger presence in between the pipes and makes the big saves at big times in the game. Was nice to see Miller finally get his first goal of his college career with all the hard work he has been putting in thus far. Another good game for Fulton, my Rudy, of the team who keeps surprising me. Glad to see Burgs get a goal too for all the hard work he has been putting in these past couple of games. As for Haggs I think I will need to spend some time with him practicing how not to hit posts anymore and putting the puck into the net.

SHD, this is a pretty impressive post especially in light that you have half the load on when you wrote it at 1am.

A nice feeling to have a 2 win weekend. But i have to put it in perspective for myself. We are still 3-5-2 and 0-4 in the ECAC. A long way to climb (which seems the case evry year lately). But i must admit this team is exciting. I love the fact that we have more offense-Laliberte, Neal, Haggerty, etc are fun to watch. And if he stays healthy, JL is going to be one real good NCAA player. I especially love the way some of our bigger boys are hitting-Curadi and Tinordi just make teams skate with their heads up and a quick look over the shoulder. The hits even sound better this year. No the opoosition wasn't Cornell or Union-but we outscored somebody 4-3 for the weekend and after going 5-19 over the past 2 weekends it will certainly mean I take less valium.

I am still expecting more from this defense though-the chemistry i expected to see after the latter part of last season is just not there yet. Years ago I coined the phrase the Dreaded Second period as we just seemed to always be flat for the middle 20 minutes. For a while we seemed to have corrected that. But this year-we just seem half asleep during that period. Cannot put my finger on it-the goaltending is a little less sharp in the 2nd, the defense just lapses into a coma and allows more odd man rushes, and the forwards forget to forecheck. Just an observation and really hae no clue why this has happened. But if we can just turn that 20 minutes around (i do not have the stats but know we are outscored by plenty in that period), we could be looking a whole lot better. Go Red! and lets get ready for 2 weeks from now and get some league wins!!

Kasdorf looked good tonight. I say put him out there in ECAC play and see what happens. Two goalie race now between Diebold and Kasdorf.

You mean 8-3? ;)

It's nice to see a win, but obviously I'm not going to read too much into it. It's only one team. If we can pull two more wins (which will be tough seeing as how we usually tie Q-Pac on even-odd years), then I think we'll start showing some confidence in this team going into the bulk of league play. We do have to remember that this is a hockey game and not a basketball game; it's 60 minutes instead of 40.

Thanks FD-yes i meant 8-3 but hard to even see the keyboard earlier this morning. It appears that this season every win should be something to be thankful for -and i do not mean just for us. There are so many close games and so many contests that just seem like upsets-it is really togh to predict. I would love us to get completely healthy for the games in 2 weeks. Mostly i would just like the defense to tighten up and work together with a better feel for each other out there. We are producing some offense, we are getting pressure on the other team and we are creating traffic in front. Much more in the way of chances to score than last year. Mercyhurst is certainly not Union or dartmouth-but as RB has always said so well-we play to the level of the competition. And this weekend, although we made mistakes and were at times on our heels-we did score 5 more than the opponents and i will take that anytime. We did OK-now we need to find the way to just be better than OK.

BTW, I believe this week RPI was paying tribute to their EMS squad. I believe some thanks is in order to JCrawford for his service with the Ambulance squad.

Great story Waite. i wish we had someone, anyone, from RPI football during my years there but from my previous posts most know that we had one of the longest losing streaks in college history. I would have though there might have been some interest that we do not know about with that very successful team around 2003 that went to the NCAA Div III semifinals. But I cannot think of any particular player that might have gotten the attention.

Dan Cole.

I'm probably being redundant with what others have written, but all in all Saturday night was a pretty good game. Miller had a great night, and is currently my favorite player to watch. Not going to score a ton of goals, but he's everywhere going 110% on the ice. Hopefully Kasdorf earned himself a start next weekend with his performance. The goal was not his fault IMO, there were two defenders within 3 feet of the guy who popped the rebound in, he should have been laying on his ***. The slot/crease has to be cleared out in scrums like that. The main issues I saw in the game were some iffy rebounds given up by him (off to the side, but not far enough back into the corner for my liking) and some brutal passes up the slot by the D, which seems to be an ongoing trend. It is a cardinal no-no to play the puck up through the slot with opponents in the zone, it leaves no room for error.

Enjoyed the weekend set with Mercyhurst. I am in agreement with the comments on Saturday's game. I remember one moment that I suspect some will also enjoy... check rpi.tv's replay of Mark Miller's goal (15:13 of the second period)... watch where Nick Bailen's momentum takes him after Miller buries the puck. :D

Kasdorf's travelling with the women's team? ;):D

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

Woohoo! That was a lot of fun!

We seem to be slowly but surely learning discipline-I was afraid Saturday's game could get out of hand after Friday got fairly chippy toward the end, but our guys did a fantastic job of not retaliating after the whistle. Both games were called fairly well, I was pretty impressed with the officiating, which was welcome. Really excited to see scoring coming from lots of different places, Burgdoerfer and Miller certainly have put in the work the past few weeks to deserve the goals they got, and the others have as well. When was the last time we scored an empty-netter?! BTW, CJ Lee was standing behind the bench during at least the third period-I didn't notice him earlier, but he could have been there the entire game. Nice to see.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

Recently, game-by-game stats have been added to the individual player pages linked from thw team roster at the RPI hockey website. It includes SOGs and shooting percentage. Does anyone know what the columns HT and UA mean? Conceivably, UA means unassisted goal. I assume that Blk means blocked shots.

Edit: HT probably means hat trick.

I would-some of these young ladies are not very unpleasant to look at. Over the years there have been a number of ladies on the team that i would not mind being in the locker room with.:)

No kidding... I remember senior year going to a few games with the pep band, and thinking to myself, "Wow, there isn't a single girl on this team I don't want..."

To answer your question, game 3 of the playoff series vs. Clarkson. ;)

That is certainly faint praise. :p

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

You weren't also a porn actor in a former life like that guy from Cortland County that made the news here ? :D

No....but I did purchase Bill Clinton's desk!:D;)

On another note......I am never shocked at what I read written by Ed Weaver, but his article this morning in the record takes the cake!

“Bryce is a big part of our program and he’s a winner and a competitor,” Appert said of senior goalie Bryce Merriam, “and I thought that what our seniors did this week, I thought our seniors really did a good job this week for our team, in a lot of different ways, through the week … and with that, I thought they all deserved and earned the right to play on Friday night. And so that led me to go to Bryce on Friday and those guys all answered the bell, and then Kasie did tonight.”----- Kev: lift this in bold, as well as Bailen element below, if story is too long. Insert Bryce before Merriam in the next graph and put end quotes after ‘what night’ above, if you do.

Kev, who must be the editor, actually printed Ed's article instructions! How can you really take anything he writes seriously?
