RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

While Montgomery was an integral, and perhaps the most important, part in the recruiting effort in the early part of the SA era, it seems to me that the level of recruiting has continued unabated since he left. All the recruits that we have coming in next season, who seem quite good to me, committed after Montgomery left. He may have scouted some of them, but they knew he wouldn't be here when they committed. I also doubt that Montgomery had much influence in the recruiting of defensemen and goalies.

I have to agree with that Ralph. Besides talking to the mothers of potential recruits is quite important and from what the women I know tell me, SA has a very special talent there. (perhaps it is the hair?;))

Another very interesting article at WaP. Very well put together piece that highlighted exactly the same thoughts that I had at the time the two left. There were lots of ramifications-all of those enumerated-plus the fact that had the 2 boys stayed, we would have had 2 less scholarships to offer and i am just not very sure how that would have affected recruiting for the next year or 2 years. I must say though, this What If series of articles are fascinating.

Absolutely true RB. Now Appert is even getting criticized for hiring good people...he can't win. :D Knowing how close Appert and Monty are as friends, Jim would be the first guy to strongly disagree with that poster's take.

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part II: You Better Starting Posting the Engineer Way

Thanks for the tip, I've only been to two, the one in Troy and the one next to the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. Will have to stop in Syracuse for lunch on my next trip to Rochester :)

Yes, the one in Syracuse is better, but the one in Troy is the biggest one there is. Also, if it's not too cold out, go out to the deck and see the watermark from where Irene hit. Amazing stuff. When you go to the game, expect to hear the skate blades on the ice, Appert and the coaches (from both theams) yelling at the officials, and maybe, if you listen closely, the WRPI broadcasters announcing the game.

Seth may be a great recruiter. My thoughts are Monty was better. But if Seth is a great recruiter where are the WINS! I know most reading this just think I post negative but I try to post reality. Often give what I think is coming next. From the last few games I feel RPI has a future, this year. As bad as last year was Seth got them playing well at the end of the year. He did OK. But time waits for no one if he doesn't win this year, like ECAC final 4, C'mon I like his hair as much as the next guy but numers don't lie.
I wonder if realet and red cloud will be paddling out to Minny together. Tee hee. What will they talk about?

Thanks for that info Ralph, I'll be heading up for that game, the kids like that Dino BBQ place below the school in Troy so we'll go there for lunch and then head up to the game.
FWIW - I dunno how old your kids are, but its GE kids night at the Field House. Kids are free with a paid adult admit.

No one here is claiming we're happy with the W-L loss record. That's a different discussion than recruiting. That is ID'ing, cultivating and SIGNING players. To debate this coache and staff's recruiting ability is silly..between the kids here now and the kids in the pipeline, its a spurious debate. THN just wrote a half page about Reno. Haggerty - stud. JL - couldve gone to any non-Ivy school in the ECAC (including SUNY Ithaca). Bubela, Zalewski -studs in the making. Kasdorf , a draftee, another big, tall, skilled, athletic keeper from Western Canada, has been even better than I thought he'd be this early in his career... Melanson, Wood, Bourbonnais, etc. etc. Not to mention some really high-end guys Appert has swung and missed on, guys we'd NEVER have even gotten the time of day from 8-9 years ago.
Bottom line is that Seth, Vines and Graham are able to interest these kids, even if they all do not ultimately commit. Which is reality for any recruiter outside of the top 5 programs in the country.

Excellent post and completely spot on. Sorry that I cant rep you for this....

Look - I was one of the guys asking questions a month or so back, and just not being able to figure out why we are not winning with the players that we have. I'll take the players any day. I think we are stacked in many ways. That is ALL recruiting. SA has done an absolutely amazing job of that...in particular given our record over the past several years and the degree of difficulty even getting thru admissions. FD and I got into this before on the number of prior team captains we have - which I think is a great thing. I want guys with the "right" attitude and who are leaders and have all won before. We have that. Recruiting must be a nightmare and these guys just keep getting it done. I was frustrated, like most all of us, at the results and overall play. I sometime wonder what would happen if we just got rid of all the coaching (overcoaching and systems ?), let go of the leash and just let these boys play. I'm a firm believer at this point that they know how to play but are constrained. Let 'em go.

Beaman - its not the recruits. We have the horses and keep getting better each year. Let them run.

You obviously don't know Jim very well, other than casually!

Thanks for that info, no, my three sons are older...two in college (RPI and RIT), one in high school. My older brother was a GE employee, don't think that qualifies for a discount though...:)

Yes, I've been on that deck but have never looked for the Irene watermark, I will definitely look for it. I think the HFH is a great place to see a game and always enjoy getting up there when I can. I work with one RPI alum who was a student during the 1985 championship season. He's told me some great fan stories that he and his classmates had that year. It's easy to get caught up in the history of the place. I also love the atmosphere when the place is packed, reminds me of the Ritter in Rochester although HFH is bigger. I have season tickets for Army. Tate Rink is a great place to watch a game, the atmosphere however is different then either HFH or Ritter, a little more reserved if you will.

If there is any RPI fan (Hi FlagDude) at the game today and tomorrow, could you note if coach Vines is there? it wouldn't surprise me if he is going to attend Edina's games instead to watch Parker Reno.

OK - oh well. Maybe you can convince them to kneel down in front of the ticket window?? :p

Wouldnt surprise me if one or both of the AC's were in MN ahead of the team.
