Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

True but probably more important is learning to play well on the road-and this is a long road distance trip. Road games are very different for lot of reasons and never to be overlooked is that the road team does not get to make the last change in matching up.

Very true, but with the makeup of the team this year I think that will be mitigated a bit. They don't have one high octane line and some scrubs, its pretty balanced. My favorite line to watch on the Ice has been the 4th line personally.

Eh, I dunno. Maybe I just have a misconception about what it's supposed to sound like. I'd imagine the acoustics are much better in Section 8 than in Section 16 however. Where I am its basically a bass drum, a crash cymbal, and some trumpets. This video was taken during the quietest part of a game, the break between periods.

I can't say if I could hear all of the instruments as I wasn't paying that close attention. What I meant was that the loudness level of the entire band was fine. It is certainly possible that I was only hearing the louder instuments. Also no doubt my ability to hear, like my other senses, has been deteriorating over the years.

Out of curiosity, when is this video from? Also, were you at Ferris State and was the problem any better? The band was very small last year when we had a huge senior class graduate and didn't bring in many people, and the band is definitely larger and therefore louder this year.

Look at the bright side... they played Ferris State 2x last weekend, and the issues were talking about are with the pep band being stuffed in the corner. Thats a good thing : )

Thats from Saturday vs. FSU. I hope you guys don't take me saying stuff as trashing you guys, I love the band. It was my favorite part of going to the games when I was little, and why I started playing drums. I even got to sit up on the band stand one game during the freak out because I broke my leg that day and people felt bad for me. I just wish they used you guys better.

I remember hearing about one game, I think we were playing SLU, when we had run the flag around the arena, and then when SLU scored, some drunk fan took off his sweatshirt and started running around the area of Section 1. I seem to remember hearing he tripped.

He did not trip. He was grabbed by students while running down the stairs past Section 22 and was administered an atomic wedgie.

Agree-but never underestimate the advantage of last change. It is not only about forwards-it is often getting a certain pair of defensemen out ther against another teams line up at a given time. I think that makes for some extra concerns when coaching on the road.

Does the band recruit?

Re: RPI Hockey 2012-2013 Part 1: Pocket Protectors and Hockey Sticks

Has anyone heard or seen anything about the possibility of RPI playing BC at MSG since the original rumor surfaced on a BC blog?

Does the band recruit?

Yes! We hold an event during NRB that gets a lot of freshmen every year - the biggest issue is getting people to stay when hockey doesn't start till October and football's not as fun. :p We graduated nearly half the band in 2011 and last year didn't get a lot of people to stay. We only graduated three people in 2012 though, and we have a ton of freshmen this year, so the band is sounding nice and loud.

No, of course not! I was just curious because I want the band to sound as good as possible for all the fans, and knowing when we were playing that helps me consider how many people we had and how we might improve our sound over there while remaining in section 13. I think the main problem is that the echoes from the HFH are interfering with the quieter parts of the songs. The main difference in sound that I can hear from your clip and in the band is the drums echoing over everything else which gives the sound a weird texture. I don't hear the clarinets or flutes, but you can never hear us anyway. Some of the loud melody you hear is actually the mellophones I think, and you're not getting as much sousa, but I think it's just overpowered.

Agreed! :) I hope we have lots of happy exciting hockey related things to talk about after the Mankato games though. :D

It doesn't happen that often any more but it is incredible when band gets to make the trip down to Baker Rink in Princeton. The acoustics in that building just makes everything so much louder.

Doc, I am pretty sure that RPI ill still be on Christmas break when we play Princeton, so I don't see any chance of getting the band there.
If Princeton is also on break, is it possible that we will have more RPI fans than Tiger fans at that game?

We've never depended on Princeton being on break to outnumber their fans in the past. ;)

From what I've heard on here, do we even need a school break for that to happen?

EDIT: GRussinko got in before me on that one. :o

Back in '85 the place was pretty much a sea of red-perhaps 75% RPI fans and the band was there. It was raucous. I think it was a 6-3 victory but it was much closer than the score indicated. We usually have a big RPI crowd for support-but Princeton does fill up the place every so often-usually when Cornell or Harvard is in town.

I have a feeling posing for a picture with Yakupov and the BioSteel fiolks didn't help matters. I suspect that if he isnt already, the young lad will soon be on a plane to Kelowna.
in today's Appeal (by Nic Kerdiles) it was learned that the twitter photo just got the boys at the NC$$ a little curious, soooooo http://unitedstatesofhockey.com/2012/10/18/new-details-emerge-in-kerdiles-eligibility-situation/

Why did the question "Liberty League school" in today's Washington Examiner crossword puzzle have six letters? Shouldn't it either have three or ten (or 30)? ;) The answer was Vassar.

Vassar? Perhaps Hobart?
