Watching the flag runner (assuming that is the correct terminology) over the weekend, I was wondering, does anyone recall when someone started running around the rink after goals were scored? It certainly wasn't done when I was at RPI.

FDude is half correct. There is a travel party limit of 23 players, however, this applies to just ECAC league games. I do not believe there is a travel party limit for players in non-league games.

That's exactly what I thought, no halfsies about it whatsoever. Unless, of course, it was misconstrued that I was including non-conference. I do know with pep bands, though, a minimum of 25 tickets must be reserved (and usually that's all they want to give out).

According to the Pep Band wiki, the small flag has been around since at least 2003. I assume it was around much earlier though.

I can recall it as early as 1999, probably it comes from even earlier.

I remember hearing from another band member that there was an official "keeper of the flag" for both the large and small flag. Once one person was bestowed both of them around 2005 or so, that tradition stopped, and now someone is nominated to use each flag as appropriate.

Not sure how long we have had this happen at RPI-but I can attest to the fact that our dear friends up in Potsdorf had been doing this for a very long time. I remember Jenny tripping their Flag Runner up at Lake Placid during the ECAC tournament either March 1993 or March 1994.

Not sure how long we have had this happen at RPI-but I can attest to the fact that our dear friends up in Potsdorf had been doing this for a very long time. I remember Jenny tripping their Flag Runner up at Lake Placid during the ECAC tournament either March 1993 or March 1994.

I remember quite a few years back when section 1 was still there, I think it was Union fans tripped the flag guy at the time. Lucky for those guys campus police got to them first.

It has been going on at least since the early to mid 90's. I specifically remember a game where a Clarkson fan snatched it and ran away with it towards the end of the loop (back when the band was on the bandstand and you could actually hear them). I was in section 10 at the time, and that's the time frame during which I had tickets in that section.

I remember hearing about one game, I think we were playing SLU, when we had run the flag around the arena, and then when SLU scored, some drunk fan took off his sweatshirt and started running around the area of Section 1. I seem to remember hearing he tripped.

As probably is the case with most alums, I tend to side with doing things like they used to be done, but i think some things like having a flag runner are good changes. (I wonder how it would have been in 84-85 when we averaged over 6 goals per game as opposed to 2 last season.)

They started going in between 15 and 33 for the Alma Mater in 2005-06, unless the group is too large and would warrant a fire hazard, such as during Freakout. At least they never did in 04-05. I happen to go up to the area out of superstition. I did it once in a while to say hi to a buddy in the band and subsequently got stuck, but we were winning those games. There was a game (or two) where I didn't go up there and we lost, so on subsequent games a few in 33 said to me, "Get your *** up there!" Granted, after I joined the band, we started going on a huge losing streak, so they wanted to tell me "Get your *** down from there!"

The problem of an exhausted flag runner from six goals a game is definitely one I want the band to have to deal with. Someone tell the team.

Eh, I dunno. Maybe I just have a misconception about what it's supposed to sound like. I'd imagine the acoustics are much better in Section 8 than in Section 16 however. Where I am its basically a bass drum, a crash cymbal, and some trumpets. This video was taken during the quietest part of a game, the break between periods.

Really hoping they can keep the scoring momentum going this weekend. A win is a win, so that's obviously the most important, but developing some scoring flow and confidence by hanging a couple crooked digits in Minnesota would be a great thing.

Really hoping they can keep the scoring momentum going this weekend. A win is a win, so that's obviously the most important, but developing some scoring flow and confidence by hanging a couple crooked digits in Minnesota would be a great thing.

True but probably more important is learning to play well on the road-and this is a long road distance trip. Road games are very different for lot of reasons and never to be overlooked is that the road team does not get to make the last change in matching up.
