What has unfolded in Albany that has brought it to this point is a long conversation. However, I am optimistic about the new mayor in Albany, Dr. Dorcey Applyrs. She's already signaling that she will examine rolling back some of the zoning laws that have really curtailed interest by private developers. That will be big first step and the sooner the better: private developers basically passed on the St. Rose campus auction.
They would have had to figure out what was possible with I-787 first, a question that persists today. Albany's riverfront is also on a flood plain--there was a reason why it was able to be cheaply scooped up for the interstate spur.
That could have been duplicated acrioss the river. Rensselaer was in contention as well, where the old high school was located. It was ultimately deemed too small, and the main dining tenant was going to be the Hard Rock Cafe. I believe if that happened, we’d be talking about the upswing of Albany, rather than Schenectady. Of course, there was also that hard-brained idea of a gondola going from the train station to the Egg

Burke was a great guy. He really appreciated the publicity we (WRPI) gave to the women’s team by airing their games. He actually never really wanted the women’s job, but he felt he owed it to his friend Bill Cahill after Bill’s death, and he turned out to really enjoy it. I felt Burke got put in a no-win situation, Shirley didn’t care about the men’s team, certainly not the women’s team so John didn’t really have all of the necessary tools sir credit needed to complete the transition from a very successful DIII team to one who can compete at the DI level. The gondola might have happened, but the proponents of the plan learned about the amount of deferred maintenance at ESP that was going to need to be addressed for it to be built.
