RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

Overall great work!!! However, there is one thing that I am just not getting.

It is my understanding that the Ivy League institutions in ALL sports will have no involvement of any kind with NIL or redshirting. I am also under the impression that they will have next to nothing to do with the transfer portal except, of course, for outgoing transfers.

My question is that if they still insist on operating that way then how the hell are any of them ever going to finish 3th, 4th or 6th in this new world order??? That is where you have three of them finishing. Tell me what I am missing!!!
The Ivies' academic prestige attracts students including athletes.

Has been this way for as long as i can remember. But i also think that they make offers that are not public and that we are not privy to. it is very difficult to believe that the top hockey squads in the Ivy League over the past many years can recruit the top tier talent that they have done without being able to attract them without having some other influences. There are simply far too many fellows who have had careers at the NHL level with degrees from Cornell and Harvard for me to ever think otherwise.

Remember back when Union didn’t offer “scholarships” but 100% financial aid?

Absolutely true Doc. If you can skate fast, run fast or shoot a basketball well, they find a way to enroll you...they just don't talk about it. ESPN radio host and former NHL first pick Rick DiPietro often jokes that he was admitted to Harvard (he chose BU over the Crimson for a brief stint).

I can think of two reasons. Our league is a middling league, behind the Big 3, competitive with the CCHA and ahead of (not by a huge margin) Atlantic Hockey and the independents. Teams 2 to 6 would be in, roughly, the 15 to 35 range nationally. I strongly suspect NIL is weighted overwhelmingly to the top 20 or so teams. Most of college hockey is not bringing in the dollars to buy their way past the Ivies.

Second, there’s a lot to be said for stability and season-to-season continuity. We saw Western Michigan just win a hockey championship. The one-and-done super teams in men’s basketball invariably lose to a team that plays better, more disciplined, team ball featuring some solid upperclassmen leaders. The lack of transfers in and out, along with players that generally stay 3 to 4 years before signing pro contracts, give the better Ivies that stability and continuity.

When I was at Cornell for grad school they introduced a new aid system. They claimed it was still need-based, but the type of aid varied based on “attractiveness.” That could be in the form of a 4.0, world class violinist, or a 100mph slap shot.

I also remember taking an exam in a room which had been used by a previous class assigning groups for a project. I looked at the various boards and recognized 75% of the hockey team. I guarantee that class was not very hard.

Reports coming out that BU will be playing their JV team against us on Sunday
He’s their number 2 goalie so that’s not surprising. They only have 23 skaters on their roster, so even if they go light on their first line we will clearly see mostly a team of regulars. Because it’s an exhibition I wonder if he will dress all and just manage time or actually sit a few of his stars.

So we'll only be facing 12 draft picks instead of all 23 ... ha ha

Basically true. Their back end of the roster or "JV" is still incredibly talented. I remember back in the good old days when we actually had JV teams. I could sit in the Field House eating a late afternoon snack and watch our JVs (including Troy's own Jak Bestle) take on a variety of other JV teams, lower level college teams and even prep schools.

Jak is just an incredible athlete.. I used to compete against him in summer league lacrosse where he played goal. And he's a heck of golfer as well, if memory serves...

He certainly was a great athlete, because in the early days of British hockey he was apparently Gretzky, Ovechkin and McDavid all rolled into one. See: Jak Bestle

271 points in 35 games?

In honor of the assistant coaches on both teams, today is 4 October 2025. There is 1 day until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 5 October 2025 for the start of next season.

For the football fans- RPI over Hobart on the road 36-10 and that just simply does not happen often!! played one of our best games in years and record is now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty league. Color me very surprised not so much with the victory, but with the margin.

In honor of coaches Eric Lang and Bryan Vines, today is 5 October 2025. There are no days until RPI's next game.
