RPI 2024 Off-Season: Was 2023 – 2024 Just a Bad Dream?

Assuming AspyDad's post proves correct (including Payant), the turnover will certainly be dramatic. I count only 10 potentially returning guys on the standard undergraduate plan: Muzzatti, Tinling, Hotson, Sullivan, McNeil, Strom, Smolinski, Matta, Goffredo and Watson.

On top of that we have, at most, 6 guys that could use the Covid year: Gagnon, Lee, Brackett, Nykanen, Beaton and Agnew.

To have a minimum roster, we need at least 5 forwards, 3 defensemen and 2 goalies (one of which is presumably the new commit Dorfman as, I suspect, a recruited walk-on). Additional departures or a larger roster size will add to the requirements. Both are highly likely so we are looking at more than a dozen new players on the roster.

I've occasionally wondered whether a technique Seth used to increase the talent on his early rosters would work any more. His first class included 3 guys, Polacek, Brutlag and Foss, that came in at 18. It was certainly a risk because all 3 were basically straight out of MN high schools. However, I suspect the big boys would have been on all of them if we'd waited until they had a full year of juniors under their belt. Things have changed so I don't think anyone is going to enter straight from high school any more (the modern equivalent is probably after their first year of junior), but the idea of taking guys a year earlier than the power schools is intriguing. The flip side is that if we early recruited the next generation Polacek, or even Brutlag and Foss who weren't Polacek-class stars but were solid contributors, would they just enter the portal once they showed themselves to be quality D1 players? In fact, with guys "committing" much earlier than they did in the past, is it even possible to "early recruit" over the big boys?

At the end of the day, for a team to succeed, you either need the right coach for a team, or the right team for a coach. Assuming this info is true, if it's for the better or the worse, it appears that we are changing the team rather than the coach.
It's a gamble, and if it pays off it could lead to next season going a lot better. It also could lead to a really bad season if rookies don't preform well and if transfers don't click with RPI. While I don't know how the interworkings of RPI's athletics faculty work, I suspect that the AD told Smith to either make changes to get a winning team next year, or he will be without a job.

Sullivan may have been taken a year before the power schools grabbed him.

I think that with Dorfman we are going back to the third-goalie-is-a-recruited-walk-on philosophy instead instead of the 2nd-and-3rd-goalies-are-each-on-partial-scholarship philosophy. With 18 scholarships in total, we can't use more than 2 on goalies. What I can't understand is why Dorfman is willing to be a practice goalie in the USHL instead of sharing time in the NAHL as he did earlier this season. He does face higher quality forwards in practice than he would in the NAHL, but ...

Great post.
It makes you wonder what Smith is up to. Where are those extra players going to come from.
He has to be fairly certain what players are coming in next year. If he isn't then he is a worse coach that I thought.
You can't empty out the team this early unless you know how you are going to replace them.
Of couirse there is always the possibility that the players just didn't want to play for him and let it be known.

I suspect that he knows within a couple of players who will be on the roster.

Having watched all the NCAA games that were televised, I noticed that many of the players had been transfers to the schools from other schools that they previously played for. I also note4d that most of these were from other conferences and not from teams and schools within the same conference. is there some unspoken rule or agreement that transfers do not remain within the conference of the team they have left? I did not think so but seeing so many boys transfer outside of their original conference was a bit obvious.
Also, since our off season will again quite long and just to add something else to discuss here, anyone see anyone already listed in the portal that we should be giving a lot of attention to??

maybe in other conferences, but look no further than Hamden. Jake Johnson and Colin Graf come to mind.

Just listened to a great interview with Darren Puppa on AHL TV between 1st and 2nd periods of Amerks vs Monster. What a resume he has, won a Calder Cup with Amerks

I'm in the middle of a busy season right now. But I will post again in the coming days. Good to see so many of our familiar posters out there plus a few new names. Blessings to all!

They need to cut bad players for sure problem is who do they have to replace them? More bad players? They’re not exactly tearing up the recruiting trail based on what’s coming in. If you can’t recruit your done

Exactly!! The team will be populated with Freshmen and the kids from the portal and they won't be the cream of the crop transfers bc the haves will already scoop up the good players and the have nots will not. It's great sounding as some have said let's gas the "bad players" but the misses by the coaching staff on these cuts just continues the downward trajectory.

I don't think there's a plan. He's in survival mode IMO.

Survival mode like you said.
Another poster mentioned maybe the AD dropped the hammer. Fix the roster to be more competitive or find a new job. I sure hope that’s what was said. I’m tired of this bullshit waxing poetically about a decent season 4 years ago. It’s been shit for 7 years.
