RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

Thanks to everyone for their messages. I didn't end up going to NYC. When leaving DC Metro, I fell on an escalator, dislocating a finger. and fracturing 2 bones. Eight hours later I got home. They said I could still go to NYC, but considering how much trouble I have with doing anything, a repeat accident was waiting to happen.

I honestly don't know how to respond to that.
Are you OK?
Please take care of yourself.

Ralph, take care of yourself! As someone who has experienced deceleration trauma in the last year I wish you the best for the healing of those broken bones! (Have you ditched the bike?)

I never met Derek, but it was easy to root for him. An Upstate NY kid that came in without a fancy sounding resume (Mike Addesa and his staff definitely had an eye for talent) he put in the effort and improved to the point where he was a major contributor on those Juneau/Coles teams of the late 80s early 90s. May he RIP.

This has been difficult few days on the boards here... I had the pleasure of watching Derek play at RPI while I was there from 86-90. Those were some really fun teams to watch in Troy and in Lake Placid. RIP and condolences to his friends and family. And condolences for your loss as well, Ralph. Hoping you're on the mend soon in all manner.

Amen to all that. Solid guy in the town too. All donations being made to the Joe Juneau foundation is a class touch. RIP Derek.

Sorry for your brother's passing and for your accident. Take care and everyone here is of course pulling for you !

Any comments on the coming weekend? Harvard and Dartmouth are just ahead of us in the standings. Both have been up and down with a few impressive performances and some unexpected losses. We'll be the underdog on both nights, but if the team builds on recent improved play it could take two. We could also easily lose both, particularly if the boys can't figure out how to up their game on home ice. A sweep and we could be positioned for a '20 type finish. Get swept and we could be looking at '24 again. This could be the most important weekend of the season.

Overall Dartmouth seems like the much best team of the weekend. But that could have been said for Clarkson last weekend also. I guess Kepler's third law is very much in evidence - 'Never bet for or against RPI' I have no idea why we have performed so poorly at home. One would think being able to get last change and match lines would do nothing but help us. As usual, we have to keep out of the box and do whatever it takes to make our special teams play at least the equal of each opponent. As you mentioned - pretty important weekend which could end up determining whether we are mid tier or lower tier for the playoffs in the ECAC.

Odds for this weekend game came late this time. Girls are 0.5 goal underdogs for each game. Boys likewise are 0.5 goal underdogs for both games. Seems like these are 4 very even games and anything can happen. Hope anything means we win a couple!!!!!

Weird game tonight for the men's team. We seemed to beat Harvard everything except goaltending, where Harvard's goaltender had an outstanding night. It was refreshing to see this team look like they are trying on home ice, outshoot a team on home ice, and get less penalty minutes then the other team on home ice. Still, there is certainly stuff to work on, such as increasing our scoring percentage and not making mistakes that lead to turnovers. If we had a shot on goal instead of missing passes leading to turnovers, or giving the puck away without shooting on our side of the ice, we could have easily had 40 to 50 shots on goal tonight, and potentially gotten important ECAC points.
Tomorrow's game worries me. While Dartmouth has dropped games to easy opponents like Yale, they still seem to be really good. I was hoping Union would tire them out tonight like they did Clarkson last weekend, but given by the fact Dartmouth shut out Union 4 to 0, I doubt that's the case. RPI needs a near perfect game tomorrow from both our skaters and our goalie. The question isn't if they can do it, but rather will they bring the pressure tomorrow against a tougher opponent.

Let's see, we got the triple crown of goals (PP, SH, and even strength) we won more faceoffs, outshot you guys for two periods and you had more penalty minutes. Not sure what game you were watching but you guys had multiple breakdowns that led to clear chances on your goalie. Yes, Koskenuevo played great for us, especially in the third period but let's not make this a "if we did this and if we did that, we would have won going away".

RPI box score says faceoffs were 30-23 in favor of RPI. That said, your overarching point remains...RPI never threatened to make a game of it. Another home loss and another game where RPI gave up 2 or more first period goals. They then regrouped in the 2nd period ....and allowed 2 more goals. I believe that makes 9 or 10 games this season where they've slept walked through the first period...allowing two or more goals. You're just not going to win many games when you spot your opponent a two goal lead, Period.

The time is long past for moral victories for the Engineers. The fact is they are a terrible home team....and the coach doesn't have any answers for this.

Yeah it’s refreshing to see this team trying on home ice.

Well said. It’s astonishing how bad they are at home. If by some miracle they gain home ice for the playoffs Dave smith should decline it and take it on the road. Lol
