RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

True, but that's most goalies these days. I'm not sure we'll ever see another goalie like Neil Little, who was emblematic of the stand up goaltender. Since the advent of the butterfly goalie the first reaction is to go down and protect the lower ranges of the net. At least Giesbrecht is a big boy so even when he's down it will still take a well placed top shelf shot - most go sailing over the net. Owen Savory tended to be a bit less of a default to the butterfly guy, but he was also on the smaller side so he would be even more susceptible to high shots if he went down too fast.

definitely a stand up goaltender…25th anniversary of the 1995 ECAC championship team, before the world went to crap, Freakout 2020…Dan Fridgen got Neil Little to do an interview with me on WRPI, I even pulled rank on poor Larry because Neil Little agreed to come do one, one of my all time favorite players so I felt like a kid on a candy store, and then…Neil left and never did the interview. So yeah, definitely a stand-up goaltender. No, it doesn’t take away that he was a great player

Should have put this post up sooner - odds for the weekend. Our boys are a 0.5 goal underdog tonight at SLU and a 1.5 goal underdog on Saturday at Clarkson. The ladies are 1.5 goal underdogs both today and tomorrow against the same teams. I suspect it could be a lot worse for the girls if our defense is not healthy. For the boys it may be as simple as staying out of the box yet still being defensively aggressive.

Neil Little was an all-timer, on and off the ice. Beauty.

We almost played a perfect game last night until half way through the third period we decided to take the three dumbest penalties you could take with a three goal lead.
It was great to get the win, but you have to wonder what the hockey IQ is for some of these guys.

With our victory last night, we’ve moved up to 7th in the standings. Now with the next 5 games being played in the Capital District (4 at HFH and the Mayor’s Cup game in Albany), we have a real chance to move up further. Now they just have to find a way to start winning HOME games…

Yes we took 3 penalties. Perhaps 2 were of the dumb variety. But you must remember that this game was played in Potsdam and in that rink you have to be extra surprised if you are not called for several infractions late in a game that CCT is losing. Doesn't happen all that often basically because they are not often losing at home but it is something to watch for. Clarkson was particularly physical during this same third period and did not get called for some similar activity. BTW have you ever seen a tree the size of #55? And from what I can tell he is only a freshman!! We will have to look forward to facing that boy for 3 more years.

That guy reminded me of one of the best quips I ever heard from a radio color commentator when RPI went out to North Dakota for a two game set during the national championship year. On that particular trip WRPI ran with the North Dakota radio broadcast. Back then they did that a few times here and there and I have always wondered ever since why they are not still doing it these days.

Nonetheless, At one point the North Dakota color guy said he had trees in is yard that were not as big as Mike Dark!!!

Many years ago in the early 1990's, when we were staying in Troy for the games there was a game against I believe Merrimack. After the game one of their star players, Steve McKenna came into the Holiday Inn (or whatever it was called in those days) along with most of the team. he was standing at the bar next to Jenny who is about 4'9" on a good day. Steve was I believe 6'8" or perhaps even a bit taller. He looked at me and said "You are married to the best date around. She is just the right height to rest my drink on!!" Truth is she came up about a couple inches above his belt buckle!

There was indeed more to the story. Kept it as clean as I could but I knew you would go there. BTW from an earlier post of yours - the Clarkson announcer is indeed one of the best we get to see and hear.

I won't be around here for a while. My brother passed away this evening from leukemia which he was diagnosed with last March. :(

Ralph=take as much time as you need. But come back to us when you are ready. I think I speak for everyone here when I say that we will look forward to your return.
