RPI 2023 Off-season: We March Fourth Into the Off-season

The roster is not properly linked from the website. It is here https://rpiathletics.com/sports/mens-ice-hockey/roster/2023-24

.

Not to jump too far ahead, but it is pretty amazing to look at a roster with no fewer than 13 seniors (10) and grad students (3). Lack of experience won't be an acceptable excuse this year. However, I'm already thinking ahead to next season. I believe all of the seniors are eligible for the Covid bonus year. I hope some are planning to take advantage of it (effectively adding them to our 3 person junior class) so the coaches can balance the classes a little better going forward.

In belated honor of Lucas Matta, today is 12 August 2023. There are 56 (8 weeks) days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 7 October 2023 for the start of next season.

I am pretty sure that some of the seniors will be back next season. The problem will be that the ones who will be back won't necessarily be the ones whom we and Coach Smith would most want to have back.

We will have 4 players with numbers over 40 next season: McNeil 43, Brown 51, Matta 61, and Payant 71. That's about the total that we have had in over 70 years. (I am too lazy to check.)

if that number is true (I’m not too lazy to check, I just don’t care) half of them were named “Brad”

Probably true, but all of the remaining seniors got a fair amount of ice time last season and contributed (other than Miller, but that's the life of a 3rd string goalie). Of course we'd prefer to pick and choose who to keep, but I could make a case for any of the skaters, including Davies and Nykannen who really took a step forward last season, as adding some value and added experience to what will be a very young team in 24-25.

So I think I chose the wrong time to camp in the woods in Maine...

For the Q&A, I think a lot of you have the wrong idea here. The fans in attendance are the ones asking the questions. Brendan and I will simply be picking questions from the chat to ask Coach Smith. I'll post the registration link here once I set it up, but I hope you all attend!

As for keeping seniors for 5th years, I am not expecting many to stay because I don't think we'll have the room. We have lots of recruits slated for 2024, especially at forward. Probably only going to be able to bring back a couple at both forward and defense.

I'm sure you are right, but 2-4 returning would help greatly. It's virtually impossible to lose 13 guys and expect a 3 man junior class (with one being our goalie and another just entering as a junior transfer) to step into such a massive experience and leadership vacuum. In fact, if he's got a leader's personality - and I'll state up front I don't know any of these guys so I'm just extrapolating from my perception of them on the ice - it wouldn't surprise me to see Nick Strom get an 'A' this year in preparation for that eventuality.

It would not surprise me if some of the recruits we are expecting are deferred. It happens every year. Only Babich and Bourgault must come.

Sacred Heart had virtually the same situation last season. They had 13 seniors and grads along with a 4 man junior class. They brought in 5 freshmen and 8 transfers, including 4 from HE, two from the ECAC (one being TJ Walsh) and one each from Ohio State and ASU. They appear to be leveraging their new rink while they can to create a series of very experienced, non-typical Atlantic Hockey rosters.

Our solution will undoubtedly be different. According to Ralph's best guess recruit list we may have 11 potentially scheduled to come in. An ideal scenario might be 9 or 10 freshmen combined with 3 or 4 seniors returning as grads (or grad transfers).
