RPI 2023-24: In Our 200th Year, We're Getting It Right

I would like to see HFH survive and be refurbished, but I agree that it would require a complete gut renovation in order to be done right, which might mean a new building is the better option from a cost and logistics perspective.

Has the Tute finished paying off ECAV? New arenas are incredibly expensive. While Q opened a building with separate 3,000+ seat hockey and basketball wings about 15 years ago for $52M, more recent projects are well beyond that. UConn and Sacred Heart opened 3,000 seat (UConn a little under and SHU a bit over) arenas last year at about $75M each. Unless school finances have improved post-Shirley I think we will see another modest renovation. With the building's old bones I suspect a gut and rebuild would cost as much as a new rink.

I am speculating, but I would guess there will be an effort to find some donors to finance the project, as opposed to the school financing it. I think you are right that unless another source of funding is found, a significant renovation or new building will not occur.

That's what happened back in the late 70's when Harvard tore down Watson Rink and replaced it with the Bright Center. The rink was named after Alexander Bright whose family made a large donation for the new building. We've made subsequent renovations over the years, the last big one 10 years ago when the rink was renamed the Bright Landry Hockey Center to acknowledge the gift from the Landry family for the major addition and renovation.

I thank that they sold beer before that too.

You are correct and you turned on a light bulb from the distant past when the Fieldhouse was still a relevant Capital District entertainment venue. At minimum, early Mike Tyson fights, monster trucks shows and the WWE all had the Fieldhouse taps flowing.

I doubt they served beer when "The Doors" and "The Dave Clark Five " performed there in the 60's.

Attendance is horrible. I’ve been going to games for 20 years season ticket holder for 13 of those years the vibe in the field house is the worst I’ve ever seen. It’s like they expect to lose. Past couple weeks when they announce the starting lineup at the end they announce the coaches and Dave is getting booed when he is announced. It’s ridiculous
6 wins but man we looked good in those 6 wins. Team played great lol

Booed by a fat a$$ in Section 7 who looks like he couldn't even tie his own skates. He sits with the Referee Wannabees (who have been strangely more subdued than in past years) yet the Section 7 Refs did not boo except for fat a$$. Boo Shirley - Dave Smith was actually doing well in 19-20. Covid and Shirley took a bite out of him and have nearly ruined the program. The effing transfer portal did the rest.

I am hoping for better attendance in January and February, but who knows at this point?!?

I heard the HFH has applied for a license to sell beer recently. I am not sure how long this process takes, but NYS never makes things easy or fast.

Are the games this week Thu-Fri or Fri-Sat? I see different schedules.
Looks like FRI 29th and SAT 30th according to both the RPI Composite calendar and the Canisius Men's schedule.
The FRI game has a 3pm starting time, and the SAT game starts at 1pm.

Here's a link to the Video: https://www.flohockey.tv/teams/6971019-canisius-mens-hockey
Unfortunately the games don't appear to
be on ESPN+ and FloHockey is $30/mo!

Guessing WRPI won't be carrying the game either with the holidays, soooo LiveStats it is!

Thanks. USCHO still shows 28th and 29th. I won't pay $30 https://www.uscho.com/gameday/division-i-men/2023-2024/2023-12-28/

Spot on

I was thinking about when the HFH stopped selling beer. It probably was around 12/1/85 which is when NY State raised the drinking age from 18 to 21 since after that most undergrads could not legally drink.

Lets do a poll. Everybody post a date that they think we can stop blaming COVID for our current predicament ! It's been 5+ years into the Smith/McElroy rebuild and the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be an oncoming train. We need to move on and break the paradigm heck the Green Bay Packers moved on from Vince Lombardi the Cowboys fired Tom Landry its no shame or not personal its just sometimes an organization needs to move on just as sometimes a Leader needs to move on(Look at SA I HATED to see him go but to say he landed on his feet and it was good for his career is an understatement) Maybe it was COVID maybe it was Shirley or the friendly confines of HFH is holding us back or maybe a combo of all of that but we need to freshen this thing of Ours up put all that behind us and get on with it.A fresh group with fresh ideas.

Yeah I couldn’t tell you who exactly was booing just know I heard it from a few different areas of the field house. Looking at the big picture 19-20 was a good season but that’s about it. Dave has a winning percentage of .373% or something close to that over 7 seasons. I think it’s time to move on and give another person a chance to lead this great program. I’m not sure about attendance anymore. Who knows maybe they will start filling seats i hope they do.
