RPI 2023-24: In Our 200th Year, We're Getting It Right

Do others also feel this way?

Since I was given credit for suggesting a thread title that would refer to RPI's 200th anniversary, I'll just say that I won't be terribly offended if this thread is terminated early.

Though we can always hope, it is getting rather hard to imagine RPI's season experiencing such a dramatic turnaround as to suggest that we are, indeed, getting it right this year.

RPI's 62 goals against leads the nation in 12 games. Army has 62 in 14 games, Stonehill has 70 in 14 games, Lindenwood 76 in 16 games both new D1 programs.

So they don't lead the nation in goals against?

They do have the worst SV% from their goalies in the nation though

It's nice to hear from you. It was a math problem that I wanted the mathematicians on the thread to solve. Defense and goaltending is not good. Makes one pine for the days of Kazzie and Yorkie.

You as well. Happy holidays to you and your family! I think we're all aware the defense and goaltending has been bad. Math-wise, it's tough to separate out defensive play vs goaltending, but the math says our goaltending is the worst in the country. Defensive play (without goaltending), we've been bad, but I don't think it's been 5 goals per game bad. Our shots on goal against per game are 5th worst at 36.6, so that could be your answer. Shots on goal aren't always the best statistic to use however. What are your thoughts?

We have for sure been blessed with many quality goaltenders over the years. I think we have to hope that when Watson returns, he plays at the same level as his excellent freshman year.

I would also note we're 5th worst in the nation in SOG. That shows a lack of puck possession on our part. That's on Dave. If you have the puck they can't score. Watson's not going come in and save this thing...wishing somebody would. I guess we'll have to wait for Kirk. Merry Christmas!

We can do a take on the slogan. RPI part II: Why Not Change The _____?

I’ll leave the rest of you to fill in the blank for me.

Coaching staff? I was going to say world but coaching staff makes more sense. Hate to pile it on but this new AD has her work cut out for her with both men and women’s hockey sitting dead last in ecac. Nowhere to go but up

Congratulations to unh on beating the snot out off us tomorrow afternoon. 9-2

Not quite.
The first time this season that they played like a team.
The team defense was excellent and they cut down on giving the puck away in the defensive zone.
Miller was also very good. He played his angles well making each save look easy.
I did not realize that we do not have a captain and assistants on the ice.
I have been saying all year that we have no leadership, and now I know why.
I hope that last night's game is a turn around for the rest of the season.

The coach decided that he wanted a leadership group.

Just back from the trip. As EHF notes, smarter, tighter defense which turn led to far fewer "mistakes." Great job clearing rebounds. Excellent work on the PK. Better passing and "awareness" at both ends of the ice. Their heads were in the game. Not easy on the road in front of 5000+. Miller was outstanding. Got the sense UNH jammed things up in the third and offense never got going in that period. But overall, some real positives from this performance.

Anyone on here saying the team has no leadership because they don't have a captain knows nothing about the locker room of this team. Dave repeatedly says the locker room is excellent, practices are good, culture as well. Aside from Mahshie and Walsh leaving to pursue graduate degrees, no important pieces went to the portal in the offseason. This senior class sat through a cancelled season together, I am willing to bet they are a tight unit. Before 22-23 season, they got a commit from Alex Aslanidis, who had a .923 sv% with AIC last year, not sure why he never came, but they brought Cherepak in shortly after. Bottom line is their starting goalie has barely played, and their second choice for his backup is probably not ready to play D1 minutes to the extent he has had to. Yes, there have been other issues, but to assume this team "doesn't care or play for each other" simply because there is no captain in a senior class of over 10 is just an extremely lazy take

If all those things are true which I believe they are. Why are they struggling so bad on the ice? I belief it’s a personal issue. Particularly with our goalies. Watson came into this season as the number 1 but he was not very good last year. He was good freshman year but he has since regressed. Miller and cherapak are not D1 goalies let’s be honest. Watson is injury prone so he goes down then what? This is on the coaches. This is how they constructed their goalie room. I would hope the staff is recruiting a legit starter for next year. The idea of Watson cherapak and a random fill in guy is frightening.
