RPI 2021-22 Restart

The series against Merrimack will not be played

Is the series canceled due to an abundance of positive cases on a team, or is it precautionary? I sure hope they aren't going to start canceling games due to risk, as these athletes should be able to continue with their respective seasons.

The game vs. Yale has been postponed. Instead they will be playing Brown both today and tomorrow, the second game being the game previously scheduled to be in Troy next month. Although it is not indicated on the schedule, This frees up a date on our schedule for Yale to play two games in Troy in February although it would require either Yale to play more than two games in the Capital District that weekend or reschedule the game at Union.

Losing the home field advantage for a game vs. brown could be important since Brown is a team we would need to beat to make the playoffs.

The Brown announcers talked about that. They said that would enable Brown to play its two games against Union when they go to the Capital District. They kind of ignored the "but what about Yale-Union" issue.

BTW: Marah Wagner just tied up the game at 1-1 in the second. Engineers really picking up the pace and dominating second period after looking rusty earlier. Brown got its goal one minute into the game before I tuned in. Wagner's goal was an impressive wrist shot over the goaltender in the opening seconds of a power play.

Edit: Despite controlling play in 2nd period the Engineers gave up a go ahead PP marker late in the period. It should be an interesting third period because the team should be very upset if they let this one get away.

No way to sugar coat this: a loss to Brown here is a huge setback for this team's efforts to make the playoffs. I didnt have a chance to watch the game so will not comment on the plusses and minuses of how they performed. But the reality is that they must now beat some highly ranked teams if they want to extend their season. I think that they have the potential to do that.

RPI did outshoot Brown 34-15. Since I didn't watch either, I can't comment.

Next season's non-travel-partner ECAC schedule has been posted as an attachment on the eLynah forum by Jim Hyla.

Here's ours:

10/28 @ SLU
10/29 @ CCT
11/4 Dartmouth
11/5 Harvard
12/2 Princeton
12/3 QU
12/9 @ Yale
12/10 @ Brown
1/6 @ Colgate
1/7 @ Cornell
1/13 CCT
1/14 SLU
1/20 @ Harvard
1/21 @ Dartmouth
2/3 Brown
2/4 Yale
2/10 @ QU
2/11 @ Princeton
2/17 Cornell
2/18 Colgate

You simply can't be losing games to Brown when you're sitting in 9th. I don't know that either of these games is truly "winnable", but it's going to be way easier to pull a point or two out of Princeton than Quinnipiac. The absolute minimum number of points necessary to make the playoffs is 18, but in reality we'll need more like 27 for it to be a 50/50 shot (or 32 to lock it up), which means pulling 13 of our last 30 with only 2 or 3 real winning opportunities left on the schedule. All this to say that we're only making the playoffs if we either start losing in OT a lot or actually win a couple upsets.

Shelby Perry joins RPI coaching staff. Should be a strong addition. She was a really good player for Colgate and has significant experience in coaching and player development and should have a lot of contacts in Ontario's PWHA. Of note, during her 4 year ECAC career, Colgate went from having its worst year ever, to its best, and winning the ECAC title. https://rpiathletics.com/news/2022/1...key-staff.aspx

It's interesting that she is an assistant coach for the Kingston Jr. Ice Wolves and also played there before going to Colgate, and two of our recent commitments, Alexis Brunet and Taryn Rathwell, are there now.

Big 2-1 OT win for the Engineers over Clarkson yesterday. RPI has done a great job of shutting down the Golden Knights in both games this year (lost 1-0 in the first game) thanks to some great goaltending by Rampado. Wagner had another strong game, as well. Need to put together a few upsets over the next few weeks to make the playoffs.

Two points wasn't bad but we have to do better than "not bad" if we wanna actually pass Cornell.

You are right Lugnut. This team is mediocre against middle-of-the-pack teams but really tough against top teams. That means that they will struggle to make the playoffs, but if they do, they will be a scary team for one of the top 4 to face. They haven't played Yale yet, but against the other 4 top teams they have split their series with Clarkson, and lost by one goal to each of QU, Colgate, and Harvard (the latter two went to overtime). But then, they also split with Brown, lost 2 by a wide margin to SLU, and lost to Cornell. They rely on grit and goaltending, so really hard to predict how they will do on any given night.
