Liberty League has announced its plan to resume athletics starting Sept. 26. Story to come later.

Given our earlier announcement do you think this has any impact on us? Frankly, Shirley doesn't seem the type to revisit things - at least not to revisit with the intent to possibly loosen the reigns. She seems unidirectional toward stricter controls. Perhaps it might it incent her, however, to keep open the possibility of starting winter sports in the second half of the semester.

I had a similar thought. This opens up the possibility, but Shirley can still not have RPI participate. I also think that RPI, CCT, etc. don't fall under the Liberty League's purview for men's and women's hockey since the LL is a D-III league. It is, however, a positive sign.

I would think the first order of business would be to get students on campus and see how that goes before starting any athletic contests.

See #11 where sophmores are not coming back in the fall...doesn't bode well.

Valid point. However, the fact that they had a separate question about M&W hockey and noted the D1 distinction gives me some hope that they may not be under the same global restrictions. I feel badly for all of the teams and I have attended contests for many as both a student and alum, but I must admit that we are a 1 sport school in terms of broad student/alumni support and that should be taken into account when making final decisions.

The fact that the Ivies announced that won't start until January is another bad sign for the season.

You’re missing Shirley’s schedule for students If hockey doesn’t start until January, the Junior class will not play hockey this season. The Sophomore class will be eligible because they are allowed on campus 2nd semester

We noticed. That's why I replied to AspyDad with hope that our one D1 sport with the widest support among students and alums would be treated differently. I expect most big $$$ D1 schools to try and come up with a path to fall sports although success is not guaranteed. Depending on how that is going in September they'll have to make a call on winter. How will D1 schools without big $$ athletic teams (FCS or no football schools like Maine, UNH, BU, Northeastern, Colgate, etc.) react? They may just follow the D3 model, in which case hockey is probably gone for this year.

Frankly, I expect most D3 schools to cancel all fall sports and, quite possibly, winter and spring too before this is all over. If they aren't making exceptions for athletes how can they plan for real competition when school A that is missing it's sophomore class athletes is playing school B that has the freshmen and juniors off campus? It certainly would mean not starting until after the first term since it would be absurd to start the winter season with one roster of players and then swap out a big chunk of them for a different group mid-season.

I spoke with a neighbor's son last night who will be 'attending' U Mass. All classes will be on line and students will have until the end of July to decide if they wish to do that from home or on campus. Each week after the end of July until October will offer an opt out of on campus living, if you decide to do that, with a pro rated refund offered if you do so. No refund of room and board after october. Much the same as dropping a class. He said they have not decided how athletics will be handled. I did encourage him to go to hockey games once play resumes. He also said the flu shot is required. I imagine the same will be true if a Covid vaccine comes out. I think what happens with the virus the rest of the summer will determine a great deal of what happens next.

I suspect that some of our players have different class status academically than their athletic class status due to having taken classes before arriving at RPI.

Barring a miraculous tail off in national cases, I gotta think our goose is cooked. If they are not making an exception for all winter athletes - regardless of what class - to be on campus then we aren't going to see any hockey this year.

Hopefully, whatever happens, it is the same for all D-I hockey programs. We are in worse trouble for the future if many other schools play and we don't, e.g., Hockey East. It's even worse if other ECAC schools play and we don't.

The scary path for me involves the staff. Aren't they supposed to be coming off furlough in a few weeks? If it turns out that we aren't playing this year, what happens to them?

I have the same concern. I do think that if intercollegiate competition is able to happen, exceptions to the campus population rules will be made for athletes on the competing teams.
