Patriots day tomorrow? Does that mean that Jacob Hayhurst and the Toronto Patriots will advance to the Dudley-Hewitt Cup? :)

Possibly.

Actually, for the uninitiated, it signifies the day of the battles of Lexington and Concord (the start of the American Revolution).

I did realize that, and Canada was on the other side during the Revolutionary War.

Yes, thanks for the link. But it leaves me with one question. How can Kenny G win the Most Improved Player award when he's a freshman? Improved from when? His last year in juniors? I guess they must mean from the beginning of the season until the end. Actually, that's MORE than one question... :)
Travis shared the Most Improved Player in his Fr. year with Sophs Luke & Neal.

We may be near bottom of ncaa to where kids want to come except goalies

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

If we want players who can score, getting them to come to RPI hasn't necessarily been the problem. The problem has been keeping them there.

It's one thing to be able to identify a gifted hockey player, but how do you know whether he is going to stick around for four years like Chase Polacek or leave early like Brandon Pirri, Jerry D'Amigo, Ryan Haggerty, or Mike Zalewski?

A lot can’t be answered. I don’t know if I would label Chase as a “gifted hockey player” coming out of HS. Remember, it was Brut SA wanted when he went to Holy Angels HS to convince Brut to come. Four years later Chase goes down as one of the greats for sure though. Interesting that the season following the Aug. departure of Pirri/JD’A the team goes to the NCAAs. I would suggest that winning would keep such high-end talent coming making those early departures more tolerable. Sadly, it would seem a losing culture has emerged though. Maybe the current Fr. Class along with the incoming Class will change that. I hope so because that’s the only reason I haven’t ruled out re-newing my season tix......yet.

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

Today is 20 April 2015. There are 166 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 3 October 2015 for the start of next season.

You don't know, but someone like Chase has his odds stacked against him to leave early for the pros. I still think all 4 early departures would have benefitted from staying 1-2 more years (the 2 is for D'amigo), but you can't predict. i would have bet my paycheck Zalewski would not leave, and i think his somewhat dismal season bears that out.

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

Jstadts finished the marathon with a time of 2 hrs 55 minutes 35 seconds if anyone was curious
Graham finished in 2:57:23

Anything under 3 hours is a great accomplishment. Big congrats from me for that. In fact, just finishing gets some applause here as the weather has been a bit tricky.

Just keeping it light but how come Yorkie never gets thrown in with players leaving early?

Not sure if it was this thread, the recruit thread, or a different one, but it was mentioned that the one place we don't have an issue with developing talent is in net. If a goaltender leaves early, it's for the same reason that these kids go to the pros from the higher caliber teams: They're ready for that step. Sure, it might be debatable with York, but he did win in the NHL within a year or two of leaving, and for a goalie, I'd say that's pretty gosh darn good.

The issue we seem to be having is that the high-caliber players may feel like our team is hurting their stats, and that given the choice, they might look better in a professional environment because the transfer procedure in the NCAA is quite the killer (not eligible for a full year; only players very serious about their education will do that). Of the people mentioned, Brandon Pirri is an exception, because he really is THAT good (came in as a second rounder, lighting it up in the NHL).

OK, but I thought it had a little to do with leaving the Team short. After Yorkie left it was all Merriam & that turned into an awful year.

My original post #330 was made in response to # 329, which was based on the premise that nobody, other than goalies, wants to come to RPI. For that reason, I didn't say anything about York, or any other goalies.

In Yorkie's last year (2010-11), he posted a very fine GAA of 2.17 and a W-L-T record of 18-11-4. Poor Bryce Merriam posted a nearly-as-good GAA of 2.36 in 2011-12, but he did not enjoy the sort of offensive support York had had the previous year, so Merriam's W-L-T record of 10-19-2 looks awful by comparison.

Yorkie may have been wise to leave when he did.

And look at all the frequent flyer miles he has earned. ;)
