Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

Wow...little mess you got there for the Mayor's Cup...nice.:D I hate to see coaches take it to the level they did though. Someone's got to maintain sanity in situations like that and coerced or not, I imagine the media will follow this story with some apologies to follow. Whatever Bennett thought Appert was guilty of, the push puts him in hot water indeed with the AD. As the scuffle went out of control there must have been some choice words between coaches, as according to the quote below they don't sound like bitter enemies to begin with. Funny, but typical...the RPI players look unusually happy for the postgame on ice celebration for the W, which often happens when guys get a load off their chest. I saw tons of this crap when I played in the ECHL, and as players we always got pumped up in the locker room afterwards...good times.:D

"This is something (Union coach Rick Bennett) and I have been talking about for a year and a half, wanting to make a special event of our annual nonconference game," said RPI coach Seth Appert, who came up with the concept to play it at the area's most spacious venue, and ultimately received the blessing of both athletic directors, Times Union Center general manager Bob Belber and three Capital Region mayors. "It's something we're tremendously excited about."

Leaving the bench to celebrate argument goes out the window as soon as the entire RPI bench goes directly to the fight instead of celebrating. The only players engaged in the fight at the point the RPI players leave the bench and start taking shots at the Union players are Bodie and Higgs, rest of the Union players are just standing around at that point until the entire RPI bench goes after the six Union guys on the ice. For the first minute or so of the fight it's about 14 on 6 RPI to Union players. Neither team looks great out of this one but I don't see how you can give an A- in classiness to RPI. Bodie's hit was unnecessary but it's an isolated incident until the RPI bench clears and engages in the fight.

Trust me, that's how everyone else who doesn't have a dog in the fight is scoring this one. A- for RPI, failing grade for Union. Saying that both teams are at fault is like saying "Well that guy wouldn't have been shot if he hadn't been walking down that street." The RPI kids jumped off the bench to celebrate a win, then once they hit the ice they realized they needed to get involved with a situation that had started right as they were jumping the boards. Bodie IMO deserves ALL the credit for starting this, and I'm about as impartial as you can get: don't cheer for Union or RPI, not a fan of an ECAC team, and heck, I think all college hockey in the Eastern Time Zone is pretty meaningless. :D

I would have given Union a better grade had they waited until the handshake line...that's the classy way to start these things. :D

Ed Weaver's summary of the weekend: http://www.troyrecord.com/sports/20140126/rpi-hopes-to-build-on-weekend-success

And without further comment:
On their trip to the North Country next weekend, the Dutchmen and Engineers will lodge at the same motel -- which is literally on the SLU campus -- as they most often have done in the past.

Likely, Bennett and Appert will enjoy a beverage together in the lounge on Thursday night.

IMO Bennett gets off light with a two game suspension >>> HERE.

He only got two games because the Union College administration understands he is the only reason that the college is getting both money and national exposure. Not to mention, if they fire him, they must pay him for this plus five more years, as that's how long his contract runs (assuming there's no clause that allows this sort of behavior to make it null and void). Essentially, he's too big to fail.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

No they won't; Bennett's been suspended. Granted, the thugs will probably still send Woody Too-Big-To-Fail Hayes on the trip.

If the ECAC adds something, they could state that he will have no contact with the team. Personally, I believe that Bennett should contact Bokenfohr and get some golf tips. ;)

I don't know if the ECAC is able to actually enforce something like that. If he's given a year or longer, it would force the college to have to find someone else full time, but they'd probably keep him as a "consultant" because they've just shown that they're OK with him punching a student athlete because of the national exposure.

I don't think Bubala's actions after the game can be understated. He did a great job keeping his coach out of trouble and the incident could have been a whole lot worse without his quick thinking. He ought to get some points toward a potential letter on the front of his sweater somewhere over the next two seasons.
