Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

I've seen 3 different videos and have yet to see Bennett swing and strike a player, but have read numerous reports that he did. Can someone please provide a link to the video and the time stamp of the incident as it appeared on that video. Thank you.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

What boiling point? He was fine when he was winning ten in a row. Now he is 10 and 1 and he couldn't take it? Gimme a break. The guy need lots of therapy. I have ben following hockey for over 50 years and never saw a coach lay a hand on an opposing coach. Lets get him the help he needs.

Well put, it doesn't matter if he's gone winless or lost his first game of the year, to become totally unglued and swing at anybody is unacceptable. He should be helping gain control of the situation - why he thinks his players can't stand up for themselves, and needs to lay out an opposing coach is really out there. If he is that rage-filled, he needs to remove himself from the ice - at the HFH, I've seen Red Berenson, Bill Cleary, and Terry Slater do this....Bennett wasn't even close to this level of decorum...one last thing, I've seen players restrain their coach successfully....where was Bennett's team?

46 to 48 seconds, he appears to hit Bubela (#17) with his left and a swing with his right when Bubela turns around...

Just got the email from Shirley's office: "time for some traffic problems in Schenectady..." :D

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

Where to start...

I couldnt believe how quickly the whole thing erupted. From some of the video that I saw and slowed down, it did look like Bodie got in a very high shot on Higgs. Higgs went out to cover his man as he should do, but I think clearly looked into the corner to his left as RPI had won the faceoff. When he turned he got rapped, and grabbed Bodie when his helmet came off. If you watch the 2 of them and roll forward, I think they are over and just walking away.

I also think that the RPI bench was set to jump out and celebrate but when saw the Higgs-Bodie tussle, they went straight at Bodie (Haggerty). At that point a couple Union guys were coming in as well, and there you have it.

From one angle it does seem that its all kinda breaking up and then Bennett comes off the bench at Appert who seems to be telling his guys to get to the bench. I dont know the cause (was it just Bennett or did Appert say something to the player skating by ?) and we'll never know. Both coaches have responsibility for and need to stick up for their players, and thats what they both were doing rightly or wrongly. There are things I question to myself on both sides, but I'm not on the team or in the locker rooms and so can have no idea of the dynamic going on that others who post seem to profess. Sometimes terrible things happen, and I think that's where we are at here - and that both coaches are probably great guys and people that I would want my kids associated with, but thru this frenzy have been tarnished in some way.

Same can be said for some of the players on each team. I couldnt see everything and not everything that happened is on the videos, but clearly there is no place for the shot that Bodie took on Higgs, nor on the behavior of Dolan. I can rest assure you that had acted in the manner that either of them did, that my father (or my uncle who was literally the toughest guy I ever met) would have been on the ice and beat me until i was bloody, and they he would have kicked my *** and put me in the hospital. I had both my boys at the game, the youngest of which plays high school hockey, and I made sure that he understood in no uncertain terms that if I ever saw anything like that out of him, that he better pray his mother killed him first before I got to him (and she would).

While I didnt think that the game was officiated poorly, they certainly let them play. We all harp on the reffing and want them to stay out of games, but in retrospect maybe a little too much was let go and there was just too much fuel and emotion at the end of the game and it flashed over.

As for the game - its an absolute tragedy that all thats in the media and that everyone is talking about is what happened when it was over. This was a fantastic game. Extremely fast, ton of energy. Everything that you want in a game. One team has been kinda down lately and the other on a roll. Wanna step up and be big, you gotta go after the king, but you better not expect that he's just going to hand you his crown. Its the best that I've seen RPI play for an entire 3 periods all game. Union was Union - relentless and never quit. I decided to go up to the 2nd level and sat in a corner and was shocked how full the arena was and how much energy was in the place. Absolutely fantastic.

Given that intensity, I'm sure some will point out individuals and moments to try to demonstrate how its really all the other teams / guys fault that the game ended the way it did. I'll call bull**** on that. Virtually all of that stuff happens in every hockey game, and if you ever played at any competitive level you know. Thyere are whiners on both sides, and a couple of ours in particular, who have no idea and no right posting have of what they do. Its incredibly unfortunate.

I dont know where this will all end up this week, and in some respect doesnt really matter as its done. I hope every game we play together is as good and exciting as the one I watched last night, and I hope we (RPI) play the rest of our games with the competitiveness and sense of urgency that we had last night. I certainly know Union will. There are also a lot of good, honest and passionate fans on both sides. Lets not continue on this board what we all collectively didnt like about last night.

Let the firing away and neg repping begin...

There have been recent incidents of hoop coaches getting fired for swearing at players in practice...not sure why firing shouldn't at least be mentioned here ( i have no belief it will happen). Bodie tries to decapitate one of our best forwards and Bennett goes WWE ape- s--- ?? Give me an effing break.... He's the leader of the #3 program and this is how he acts ?? Two games is a an absolute joke. Let's not forget CCT's Mark Morris got run out of town for shoving one his own kids in practice.

Great take as usual Senna... The garbage after the buzzer will likely forever cloud over what was as a good a college hockey game as you'll ever see. Great effort by both squads - RPI did the sweaty work down low and buried two rebounds -- difference in the game. Outstanding effort at beating the trap for most of the game.

That said, I'm not a vindictive person, but given that Bodie's bush league x-check appears to have started the entire melee, Bennett's actions defy logic and deserve more than 2 games....but that's just my 2 cents. His only job was to get his maroon shirts back on his side of the ice. The fact that Bodie didn't want to go with Zalewski tells you all you need to know about him...can't back up his actions when the helmets come off - a true facemask hero. We'll schedule his fitting for a pink skirt this week.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

From Union's 2013-14 Staff Handbook: "Violence, threats, harassment, intimidation, and other disruptive behavior on our campus will not be tolerated. All reports of incidents will be taken seriously and will be dealt with appropriately. Such behavior can include oral or written statements, gestures, or expressions that communicate a direct or indirect threat of physical harm. Individuals who commit such acts may be removed from the premises and may be subject to disciplinary action, criminal penalties, or both."

It looks like Coach Bennett will need to meet with his supervisor to develop a "Performance Improvement Plan" to discuss "the problem," expectations for improved future behavior, and a timetable for future review. :D
Sounds like a textbook case of bullying to me...:D

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

All I can say about all of this is 3 things. One, I've never seen so many posts about one matter, which ranged from the laughable to the angry to the sensible (thanks, Senna!). Second, this whole thing has been blown WAY out of proportion and it will blow over in the next couple of days (there still are 10 games to play in the regular season). And finally, the thought makes me shudder that these teams could end up meeting in the playoffs.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

This video shows a whole new perspective, IMO. One gets to see a lot of the ice after the initial incident of Union #22 crosschecking RPI #23, which start this whole mess.
As an impartial observer, here's some observations I get from the video that may or may not have been reviewed by the league office.

1. 6 Union players on the ice. Entire RPI team on the ice. Union players being chased down.
2. Can see the entire sequence of when the RPI coach steps onto the ice. RPI coach walks to center ice and says something to RPI #5. It appears #5 is not instructed to retreat to the bench, as #5 proceeds to skate towards the Union bench.
3. Simultaneously, the Union coach leaves the Union bench and walks towards the RPI coach. Union coach gives the RPI coach a two handed shove. It appears that the RPI coach takes a few swings at the Union coach, and vice versa. The coach's melee moves toward the sideboard. RPI #5 is standing facing the Union bench. RPI #5 shoves a Union player, twice. The Union bench now empties onto the ice. RPI #5 continues to get it on with a number of Union players, ending with a tussle with Union #12.

Both coaches share responsibility in this mess IMO. We'll see what the league office says.

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

I have been reading this and the Union thread like a housewife watching "Days of Our Live's. It has certainly outshone the slew-footing penalty debate from the Brown -Yale game last night. As an objective observer with no horse in this race except Yale, I predict that Bennett will get four games from the league. They will need to send a message and the two gamer from the College has already set the bar too low for the league not to hand out a higher penalty. I hope for both programs sake, that everything else stands and things blow over for the rest of the season. Now the burning question, did Appert's hair ever get out of place during the incident? Thanks for the entertainment .

Re: RPI 2013/14 Part II: The HFH is Covered with Frozen Drivel

Seeing it live my initial reaction was that coach Bennett thought Seth sent his players after Bodie. That is why he flipped out. That was a very cheap shot. Higgs was actually starting to turn away from Bodie. I am sure they will interview Bennett and find out why he reacted the way he did. If he hit an RPI player he will be packing shortly.

Agree, that was vicious; I'm surprised they didn't get him for cross checking. According to the box score, Bodie was charged with roughing, 5 for face masking and a game DQ. I wonder if the league will give him more.
