Re: RPI 2011 Recruit Thread Pt. IV

If York leaves and we sign a replacement (e.g., Keeney) for this fall, I wonder if that would mean that Kasdorf would delay until 2013. I suspect that SA won't want three scholarship goalies on the team at one time.

Re: RPI 2011 Recruit Thread Pt. IV

Given that York's return is 50-50 at best (I happen to think he's headin' out).

I have been away for the weekend, and have not been able to post. Wicked, do you know something that the rest of us don't?
I would have agreed with you at the end of January, but his play after his concussion has been less than stellar. I think that he will be back next year just so Columbus can figure out which York they will be getting.
That is just my opinion, but he was not the same goalie in February that he was earlier, and I don't see him being given a pro contract until the Blue Jackets are sure that he is OK.

Extremely sensible. He has not been the same and I would think he would want to prove he is not the goalie that just gave up 6 in a game. However, that injury may have scared his agent-another concussion like that and a pro career could be in doubt and agents only prosper if their client signs a pro contract. There is the possibility that he may be being influenced that he needs to sign and avoid another possible injury at the college level.

Reading that article in the Record today, it sure sounds like this is a good possibility. I wouldnt mind seeing the three scholarship goalies at RPI for 2012-13, if we make Kasdorf wait another year, theres always the chance he could decide to go someplace else, I dont wanna see that.

It crossed my mind that Kasdorf might go elsewhere if asked to wait. Although I wouldn't mind at all us having three scholarship goalies, with only 18 scholarships, it is hard to justify that many on goalies. However, if three are two half scholarships and a full one, or some other combination totaling at most two, it is possible. I doubt that Merriam is on a full scholarship, but I suspect that Kasdorf was offered one. So the question is can we get a goalie now for about half price. The answer is probably "yes".

You are right, I hadn't seen that article before I made my post. I guess he has one foot out the door.
I am glad that this is all being done so early. At least we have a chance to fill the gap.
It wouldn't hurt the RPI program if he were to make it to Columbus.

I do not agree that two halfs plus one full would be Ok. I (and I imagine SA as well) would be ok with 2.5 schollies used on goalies for one season if it means we get to go after a blue chipper, rather than being stuck with a half-scholarship goalie as our #2 for four years. I especially imagine this to be the case given that it seems to me that Kasdorf may not be the top prospect that York was. This could certainly change depending on whether Kasdorf plays juniors next year, and if so which league he plays in. If he goes to the USHL and is the best in the league, for example, my thoughts on him would certainly dramatically improve.

Long story short, unless we are unequivocally sold on Kasdorf as an unquestioned #1 right from the start, it will definitely be worth using another full scholarship on a goalie for next year.

I suspect that Merriam is not on a full athletic scholarship, although it may be augmented by other aid.

Re: RPI 2011 Recruit Thread Pt. IV

Seth will have to sign another goalie. He can't start next year with just Bryce and Coupal. I have confidence in Bryce that he will be fine but if he gets hurt... I agree with WS that Monty may be able to be of assitance.

Right, which is what I was basing my comment on. Merriam is half. Kasdorf is 1.5. If York bolts, we have 0.5 on the books for next year and 1.5 the year after (and 1.0 after that). I think that it would be much wiser to go 2.5 (Merriam, Kasdorf, and a recruit) in the 2012 season and 2.0 thereafter rather than slum it with our new recruit so that we are 2.0 for 2012, leaving us at 1.5 thereafter.

Re: RPI 2011 Recruit Thread Pt. IV

That would be a terrific pick-up if we were to score him. The game I saw in Youngstown, the Dubuque goalie (I think it was him; please correct me if I am mistaken) was absolutely amazing. He had a few highway robbery moments there.

I don't recall who the goalie was when you watched the team, but he has been the backup most of the year.

When did you go? In November, Matt Morris shut out Youngstown 1-0 (23 saves). In February, Teichrob earned a 4-3 victory (29 saves on 32 shots).

I think that statement is slightly disingenuous. It has been almost a dead-even split throughout the year (although Morris has certainly put up the better numbers and is half a year younger).

I went November 20th. I could have sworn Teichrob was in there, but I guess not.

I now see what you were getting at. I suspect that SA, like almost all other coaches, would like to have 2 full scholarship goalies on the roster. I think that the scholarship circumstances upon SA's arrival and the need to fill so many holes on the roster dictated not being able to pick up a full scholarship second goalie. I also think that York's blue-chip status would make SA more confident not using a full scholarship on a backup. In short, the circumstances this time around are, in my opinion, vastly different.
