Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

I wonder how that works from an educational standpoint. Do they hire a tutor and become "home-schooled" to finish out and get their diploma?

They usually live with a "hockey family" and go to school in that local district.

USHR has a ranking of the top New England prep league seniors, Jake Wood is listed at #26

26. Jake Wood, F, ’92 (Gunnery/RPI) 5-8/165—Skilled, quick, small forward makes a lot of plays. Has the ability to play an energy role if need be. Versatile.

If anyone is around the Boston area this weekend and want to see some hockey, Drew Melanson and Delbarton are playing at Harvards Bright Hockey Center on Saturday against Malden Catholic and at BU's Walter Brown Arena on Sunday against Catholic Memorial. Saturdays game is at 4pm and Sundays game starts at 2pm.

Does anyone know if these schools will offer good competition? I know that Catholic Memorial was once the top program in the Boston area, but HSs are no longer where most top talent play.

RB: Really hard to judge Delbarton this year. They really have not faced any team that could give them any trouble. The balance of power in NJ schools has shifted greatly in the past several years. The yearly powerhouses like Brick and Christian Brothers Academy have faltered badly. There still is some individual talent on some teams but the concentration of better players has seemed to gravitate to Delbarton. I saw them last year a couple times and they simply outclassed the opposition. It will be interesting to see how they can do in Boston.

Do you know if any of these players will be playing against Central NY schools, or even some northern ones (like Norwood)?

Only other time they come up this way is the last weekend in January when they play a game at South Kent (CT) and the following day they play Northwood but that game is being held at Middlebury College. The closest Gunnery plays is the 1/22 game against AA at HFH.

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

I wonder if RPI's lack of success this season is making it more difficult to recruit. Although there have been many recruits listed recently on Heisenberg's list for other schools, Bourbonnais is the only new recruit who has appeared in the last several months. I do suspect that although we still need additional players that we are probably looking for partial scholarship players and recruited walk-ons for the fall, and these tend to be added late, but additional players for 2013 and beyond could also be added at this time.

I also wonder if the lack of success might cause already committed recruits to have second thoughts. That seems to be coming more and more prevalent in recent years with both Cornell and UNH recently losing recruits (and perhaps others). I don't recall RPI losing anyone except H****y in recent years.

How many recruits did we gain following the appearance in the NCAA tournament?

Re: RPI 2011 - 12 Recruit Thread

Bourbonnais is the only one who has committed since then. I don't know if that was a factor although it might have helped.

Plus, sometimes we get recruits that have the determination to get the team somewhere, like JL. Why try to fit yourself into a system when you have the ability to be creative and be a leader of the team on the ice? Perhaps that is what Coach is looking for.
