Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Thanks for the insightful commentary - I'm not espousing that anything has been magically cured with this team, nor sitting around whining on this thread - and I don't see others doing so either. If my pointing out the general malaise you bring to the table is "policing", haha, so be it. You keep rolling like that if it makes you feel good.

If you honestly think I bring "general malaise" to the table, I don't know what to say.

Believe what you want about me. I don't give a ****. I'll continue to say what's on my mind whether it passes your muster or not.

And another thing. Remind me again what you're bringing to the table?

I never heard them play a song named "On!". ;)
I think I can recall a time when Army came to the Field House and the band saluted them with the West Point fight song, "On, Brave Old Army Team."

If the band refers to our fight song as "Hail," then I guess they could refer to Army's as "On."

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

I have two items that I submit for comment:

- Cornell's defeat by RPI may wind up costing them an NCAA bid. I think they were at #14 in the PWR before the weekend. Beating Union put them in position for the automatic bid, and maybe a high enough PWR even if that were not the case. Now I see them at #16.

- RPI's late season success - its a young team that needed more time than usual to come together and adjust at the start of the season. That development was delayed because their 1H schedule was too tough. I loved the great teams they got to play this year, but it's hard to develop under those conditions.

According to discussion on ELynah, UMass, whom they lost to, becoming a TUC, hurt them more.

Because the NCAA field is picked today

But seriously, a couple TUC wins would flip the Michigan and Minnesota TUC Records (especially if neither wins their tournament). Colgate (not very likely, but could happen) or UMass (who will either not be making the HEA tournament or will be playing and losing to BC in the quarters) falling out of the TUCs will both improve Cornell's TUC record. Niagara and Yale are also close to the TUC Cliff and can become TUCs (improving Cornell's record) by making a deep run in their conference playoffs. Not to mention that Cornell getting to Atlantic City and winning a game there will have a huge impact on their RPI, especially since they play fewer games (so a win has a bigger positive effect on their winning percentage).

The end result is that Cornell has plenty of time to improve their PWR standing and are certainly not going to miss out on making the tournament because of their loss to RPI (except for the fact that it changed their seed in the ECAC Tournament).

On this point, one of RIT's sousaphones played the opening line of "Anchors Away" when their win against Army was all but assured in the fall. Hopefully that is also in the RPI's pep band arsenal?

I remember this being played by one sousaphone player who went behind Army's bench to play it when we faced them in the 2005-06 season. Since then, I do not recall us using it. Usually someone would only play it if we were winning by a significant margin late in the third period.

As I recall, this drew a nasty letter in the Poly from a fan who felt that because it was a service academy, it should be exempted from all good-natured ribbing (similar to "warm up the tanks"). Apparently cadets are tough enough to play D1 hockey while training to become a soldier at West Point, but not tough to handle a joke from a bunch of nerds at a tech school. Or so this fan thought.

I guess it wasn't played this year. :)

I seem to remember responding to that letter in the Poly the next week. ;)

It's better to be playing well end of season. Last few years we have not been a February, march team.

Let's get this thread finished so we can start fresh for the playoffs! This weekend should be a totally new season for the boys. The slate is clean and I am hoping for a lengthy post season.:)

Amen to this. We definitely have 2 games, and a mathematical maximum possibility of 12. However, it's still important that everyone, even us antsy fans, go one game at a time. From now until Friday at about 21:30 Eastern (with any amount of slack provided for a potential overtime), the most important game is the one played Friday. For all I could care, any game beyond that time isn't even happening.

Here's the crux of the argument - the team played well last week, it's true, but they were horrendous two weeks ago. I've been burned too many times by this year's team to take one week's good games and pronounce the team cured.

This used to be standard operating procedure regardless of how the game was going.

I might suggest "Into the Wild Blue Yonder" instead though, since it's hockey and their biggest rival is Air Force.
