Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

I have sympathy for RPI fans who are suffering now since Union suffered quite a bit during their initial foray into the ECAC D-1 ranks....

I have a great place for you to stick that sympathy.

I just take offense and a certain amount of umbrage at all the sniping and the snide comments that defame a quality school like Union with both a good academic and athletic reputation......

Only requoting for the humor value here, no commentary necessary.

I promise to only chime in when I see childish comments made by the RPI community towards the Dutchmen............

And, apparently, to chime in with childish comments of your own.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

False. Have yet to see a scenario where it is possible.
Here is one, there are a few other scenarios.

February 17
Harvard at Brown
Quinnipiac at RPI
Dartmouth at Yale
Cornell at Clarkson
Princeton at Union
Colgate at St. Lawrence

February 18
Harvard at Yale
Quinnipiac at Union
Dartmouth at Brown
Cornell at St. Lawrence
Princeton at RPI
Colgate at Clarkson

February 24
Union at Cornell
Yale at Princeton
RPI at Colgate
Brown at Quinnipiac
Clarkson at Dartmouth
St. Lawrence at Harvard

February 25
Union at Colgate
Yale at Quinnipiac
RPI at Cornell
Brown at Princeton
Clarkson at Harvard - tie
St. Lawrence at Dartmouth

RPI ties Harvard for 4th at 21 points, wins by second tiebreaker (9 wins to 6).

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

False. Have yet to see a scenario where it is possible.
Game results applied in the following order:
1) RPI wins out
2) Cornell / Colgate / Union win out remaining games (games against each other can be any result)
3) Princeton / Brown win all remaining games (Brown-Princeton game next Saturday can be any result)
4) Dartmouth-Yale tie Friday and then win out all remaining games
5) SLU wins remaining game (against Harvard)
6) Harvard-Clarkson tie

Final Standings:
Code:
--------------------------
| 1 | Union | 34 |
| 2 | Cornell | 29 |
| 3 | Colgate | 27 |
| 4 | Rensselaer | 21 |
| 5 | Harvard | 21 |
| 6 | Yale | 20 |
| 7 | Clarkson | 20 |
| 8 | Dartmouth | 20 |
| 9 | St. Lawrence | 19 |
| 10 | Brown | 19 |
| 11 | Quinnipiac | 18 |
| 12 | Princeton | 16 |
--------------------------

Princeton holds the tiebreaker over both Harvard and Clarkson, so the Crimson-Knights game can end in either a tie or a Clarkson win.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

There's a rumor from WAP that we will be playing St, Clooud next year. If there's a reciprocal trip planned the next year, that's great news in looking to get some PWR comparisons with the NCHC.

I'm still working on my calculations...bartender didn't have pen so I couldn't work it out on cocktail napkin at lunch.

Where the he double hockey sticks is RHamilton when you need him? I thought he would be running two computers on this one.

You don't need two computers for this one. There's a couple of things that have to happen or else it's impossible (i.e. RPI must win out, Clarkson/Harvard must lose out with the exception of getting a tie vs. each other), and already that is an incredible longshot. We probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than we have of getting a first round bye. To those that bash naysayers, that's a LONG way from the chance being zero.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

I should have known that was going to bring down the nerd squad.

Great! I have done some of my finest calculating on cocktail napkins. In fact spent lunch today doing our taxes that way.:)

Cocktail napkins are the way to go. Typically, I use them to show people how to do square roots with pencil and paper.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Using KRACH and the powers of probability, I calculate our chance of getting a bye as 0.00000000834%, which is a little bit worse than 1 in 10 billion (Of course this isn't perfect as I can't adequately account for ties and momentum isn't considered, but it gives us a ballpark). So yes, there is a scenario that gets us a bye. No, it's not going to happen.

I KNEW my chances of winning the lottery were higher! But it's still a chance. I won't hold my breath for it, though.

We have been known to have all of the dominos fall correctly before, but this one seems quite unlikely. Perhaps we could protest some goal to give us an extra point. :D

We haven't exactly been screwed this year.
