Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Not to beat a dead horse but our discussion regarding some games being bigger than others I looked up Gretzky's numbers...regular season vs playoffs...In 1487 regular season games including juniors he averaged .6 goals per game and 1.3 assists...In 208 playoff games he averaged .59 goals per game and 1.25 assist I believe that to be a statistical dead heat.So if numbers don't lie it appears the "Great One" at least seemed to treat them all the same !!!!!!!....now there's some red meat for everybody...and remember Fdude I wear your and Ralph's scorn as a badge of honor.

not exactly the best comparison
maybe they played better teams in the playoffs

Scorn? I'm mostly in agreement with you! All a big game should do is give you more motivation to play your game. At the end of the day, the players need to play the exact same game as if only their parents were in attendance and no one else. If anything, you just proved my point. Consistency is important. The player's game needs to be consistent. Obviously if the coaches feel the player's game isn't helping matters, then they'll work with the player to tweak that game and make it workable, the player follows through on that tweak and consistently performs it in practice, and that's what we see when Coach says a player has "earned his spot in practice".

Apples vs Grapefruit. Regular season scores are notoriously different than playoffs and of course in the playoffs he was up against far better teams. All that stat shows is that he was just as great against the best teams in the best games and that no one figured out how to stop him. Simple-in any sport-there are Big games and their are other games. You should try to win them all but some just mean more than others. Reference-late march 1985 Joe Louis Arena Detroit. It is a coach's job to get his team prepared for these games and do whatever is necessary during the games to insure the best performance. It is the team's job to give their full effort and play their best in those games.

Clarkson still sucks...couldn't help myself :D

I cannot count how many times over the many years that I have followed this that clarkson has played in a game (either aginst us or almost anyone else) and was in a position where something they did would benefit our position. Virtually every time-the result was that they did exactly the opposite of what was necessary to benefit us. Coincidence? Probably.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

More good news: We have more wins this year than the 2008-09 (regular) season!!!

But still the fewest wins overall since 1969. As far as goals scored-I can't remember being this low since the debacle of 1965-66 and we only played 22 games that year. But we do have 4 more games this regular season and at least 2 playoff games(although i am hoping we have at least 7 in the playoffs). I could not say this several weeks ago-but i think there are at least 8 other ECAC teams that will have their hands full playing us right now-even if we have to play them on the road.

Our record since January 1st is 5-4-3. Only 4 losses in 12 games. I won't tell you what our record was before Jan. 1st.
We are improving and if we can continue, we will make a lot of ECACH teams very nervous.
That said, we have to find 2 more goals a game to really strike some fear into the league.

Right on the button. Lots of players starting to show they can contribute-even though it took 25+ games to get started. Love JL up front on the power play instead of the point. Lee and Tinordi showing more each game and Malchuk just all over the place last night. And getting the little things done-winning face offs, keeping the puck in the offensive zone as time winds down in games (it got us the goal to tie against Harvard and kept Dartmouth from getting even last night). It even sounded like the goal Dartmouth did score should have been stopped either by the defenseman or the goalie and we could have pitched a shutout. If this offense can generate 1-2 more goals per game we could be looking at an entirely different scenario for the playoffs than any of us could have predicted 2 months ago. Crucial though that we do not let the refs dictate the results by putting us in the box-penalty minutes have come down and we need to keep them there.

I'd love to hear what kind of talk Seth gave the team after the debacle in Storrs. Sitting there as the consolation game wound down I thought we'd hit rock bottom - losing horribly to a good team and frustratingly to a bad team. Whether he told them to just do a reset on the season or they individually made New Year's resolutions to turn it around, they've been playing a much better brand of hockey (with a couple of obvious exceptions) since the middle of the 2nd period of the TV game against Dartmouth. I can see us having a good chance to beat most of the teams in the league and even those that have established themselves as clearly better should not relish the chance to play this outfit. We'll give them a much better run for their money in the playoffs.

Honestly, so long as the opponent's number of goals in a game is less than 2, I could care less if we only scored 2 goals in a game. Obviously that isn't always going to happen (and I'm willing to accept that), but we should at least take pride in what our defense has accomplished in the last 12 games. This is a very defensive-minded team, and keeping the other team off the board is just as important as us getting on the board.

One thing I've noticed in the professional games I've watched involving RPI alumni that played under Coach Appert (yes, I know in which thread I'm writing) is that most of them are getting a good deal of ice time during the penalty kill. If that isn't evidence of what Coach is teaching, I don't know what is.

Yup-our record is nothing to be proud of but can anyone imagine what it would be like if we did not have a very competent penalty killing team? I never like to see us short handed in a game-but feel a bit more comfort knowing that we have AAG and Malchuk out there on the PK. Of course they can only do so much-and if Kotyra or Murphy or one of the other thorns in our side get the chance to put us down 2 men at a crucial point of a game-we will be in deep trouble. Put those two Refs together and you get the second game of the Cornell series in the playoffs a few years back. Were we 2 men down 4 or 5 times that game?
This team has some strengths-and although it has taken until February, they are developing more. Now if we can just stop hitting the crossbar, missing open nets, or just plain shooting wide-we will be making a lot of teams very nervous about losing to one of the lowest seeds.
Just one additional thought-I reall a pretty bad year in 1981-82. Anyone remember what started to happen the years after that??;)

That was a long drive home (despite typically being the shortest in time for any ECAC rink), and I don't like to remember that game.

We've had a problem with hitting the net quite often for the past couple of years. Even our alumni have problems with it (JD'A missed a few open nets in the game I saw him play).

FD-I was actually afraid to take my blood pressure after that one. Over the years i have seen some incredible bad officiating-including once in Boston when we lost a semi final ECAC to St Lawrence that was an abomination. I often resorted to a quick hit from a flask at games that Mike Noeth or Pierre Belanger were in control of. But that game at Ithaca, and the one in Boston were the most clear cut examples that I had ever seen of intentional activities by the officials directed specifically against us to influence the outcome of a game. Bad calls happen-and often times they even out or they are just overcome by a team playing well. i get upset with the officiating at times but truthfully in the 48+ years of following RPI hockey I can only think of those 2 instances that i will not ever believe weren't intentional. If you get bored one day-take some time and go back in time and research our record in games in which one of the officials is Kotyra.

Given section 33 has bashed Kotyra after games where we won, I'm not surprised. But yes, I believe that was Hagwell groveling in Fat Mike's presence for issuing that suspension. We ended up getting Dell the next night, and the Lynah Natatorium faithful were STILL ticked.

And we were on a great roll going into Boston that season. :(

Do you think that Fulton's Folly was intentional? (What year was that anyway?)

That year(March 1992) in Boston-when we had St Lawrence beaten late in the third period in the ECAC semifinal-we were the lowest seed. We had upset both Vermont and Harvard after finishing way down(the lowest see-10th place) in the regular season ECAC standings. But we were on a great roll. We were playing just flat out great hockey. I wish I had a camera to record the last 10 minutes of that game in Boston Garden-and the Overtime. It just became obvious to us that they were not going to let us move on to the final.
