Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Great game last night by the boys. Really nice to see us get the tying goal, a winner in OT would have been justice. The USCHO article captured the game pretty well in my opinion, so I'll just share a few extra thoughts.

Good things
  • My nephew scored the first goal in the mite game between periods!
  • Brad Marchand was on hand and I think he was sitting with the RPI extras. My son managed to get a picture with him before everyone noticed him. He had to retreat to the press box to keep from getting badgered too much. Oh to be 23 and have scored two goals in game seven of the cup for Boston! That kid walks on water here right now.
  • The freshmen forwards just look much more confortable out there to me. They are growing.
  • We doninated along the boards.. led by Lee
  • Lee and Cullen were both really moving. They don't look like the same players form earlier in the year. Much more speed and hustle.
  • Leonard still looks so smooth out there. He just doesn't make mistakes.
  • We were all over them in OT, great finish to the game.

Bad Things
  • Tripping call on Curadi in the 3rd was total garbage. Was sitting with a BU fan who agreed 00%
  • Bailen still trying to do too much and turning it over. Just make the easy outlet pass!
  • Bergin really didn't play the 2 on 1 on the 2nd Harvard goal well. He tried to cover both guys instead of just taking away the pass. Let the goalie handle the shooter! Very basic hockey axiom and he botched it.
  • We derserved a win, not a tie
  • Two posts, including one by Bailen that wasn't mentioned in the article.

This team is playing better and I'm feeling pretty good about their chances in the playoffs.

Hmmm! Marchand is an '88 from Nova Scotia. So is Justin Smith, and he was one of the extras. I bet they know each other from youth hockey somewhere along the line.

Agreed. Im liking their chances in the first round since it seems every team from 4th place on down is beatable, however im not sure how I feel about the likelyhood of drawing Union, Cornell or Colgate in a possible quarterfinal round matchup though...

From what we have seen so far we do not match up well with Union or colgate and would have to make some major adaptations to be competitive. We seem to hold our own a little better with Cornell and Clarkson but again we will need to make some changes. Against anyon eelse in the league, I think we can play a very competitive series. We have been close in quite a few games.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

No one matches up well against Union Doc... Including Dartmouth's Gaudet who was quoted in today's TU saying he thinks they are a NC caliber team.

I agree with that assessment for sure. Last year we played well against them-but we had a totally different offense to throw at them. I do think however that there are things that we can do to play a more competitive game against them if we get the chance in the playoffs. Against Colgate we have to develop a strategy to deal with an extremely hot scorer and his linemates. Much like coach Vaughn did against Chase and company in the past. I am not a smart enough hockey mind to know how you do that.

Correct RB. Both Marchand and Smith played for Dartmouth Subways of the NSMMHL. Marchand left for the QMJHL in 2004-05. Some kid named Crosby also played for the Subways. Not sure whatever happened to him. :p:D

I think that he sang White Christmas. ;)

Great road weekend-we come home for the next 2 games and we have a chance to move up a bit in the standings with a strong showing. We played very even with both of these teams on the road-losing both games late. We still are not exactly a scoring machine (only getting 2 goals in each game this weekend) and i am sure we will need to up that total this coming weekend if we expect to win.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Could have used some help from Clarkson tonight-if they could have held on and beaten Quinnipiac. That would have kept QU closer to us in the standings and given us a slightly better chance to catch them in the last 2 weeks. But of course-Clarkson never does anything to help us and lost.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Just read the wrap of the game. Dartmouth only had 13 shots on goal. Sounds like we took it too them pretty good. Press account said that winning goal went off JL's foot in low slot. That's where I like him, not on the point all though I know he played on the point during PP in Juniors. Wouldn't it be something if we could crawl and scratch into 8th. Go Red!!!!

Yale's falling apart, so we have help there. Honestly, it's about time that the team puts their fate in their own hands and earns their way up to home ice. We are two points away.

Agreed. Union is dominate. Bennett should be Coach of the Year. Of course Colgate impresses with Smith but Cornell didn't knock me over. when they came in to HFH there leading scorer (D'Agostino) had 7 goals. That is what the trap will do for you... keep you consistent.

Clarkson still sucks...couldn't help myself :D

It's okay, Clarkson winning would have made it impossible for us to get a bye (not that it is likely). Rejoice in their suck.
