Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

A-flat major for Star-Spangled Banner and E-flat major for O Canada are very common keys; I know I'd bring it up a couple of whole steps being a tenor (I always performed the Star Spangled Banner in C major; never performed O Canada). At the Crunch games when they're playing a Canadian team, they play O Canada on the organ in either A major or B-flat major, and it's a surprisingly comfortable range.

I was told ther would be no music needed for the thread

I would think it's less up to the coach and more up to the athletic / facility administration. They're more apt to listen to money.
Coaches have budgets...which are rarely as big as coaches would like. Boosters give money. You can bet your butt Nick Saban isn't sharing his football booster money with the men's water polo team. Any coach worth his salt has a say on anything going on inside their program.

No, it's because moving the band upset the karma of the HFH. ;)

Yes, I know that the band had already moved last year.

Actually it is Feng Shui that is out of balance, not karma. It takes a while for the consequences fully to settle in.

Give the Pep Band its due, and please move them back behind the glass (though I know this won't happen).
They probably should have kept the pep band on the stage until they actually have the funds, whenever that may be, to start the next step of construction to the east end of the fieldhouse (cafe, luxury boxes, warm-up area, new seating throughout the rink, etc...) It would be nice when the construction is all done though to have a spot for the band to perform ontop of the new cafeteria area above the glass protected by the netting.

Feng Shui-I think I had that for dinner last week with another order of Mo Shu Pork. Delicious with a side order of Crab Rangoon washed down with a bottle of Plum Sake.:)

I still think we should have kept the chicken wire instead of installing plexiglass. Then see who was brave enough to sit behind the goals.

So now we are blaming a young girl for our teams troubles...can we go any lower as a fanbase?

I don't think anyone's blaming her for the team's troubles, but I will say that between the butchering of the songs and the slowness of the tempo, I do feel like I've just arrived at a funeral.

Is it in the plans to construct something in the east end of the HFH? I either missed that a few years ago or forgot it.

I sent an email to the Col. a couple months ago asking if there was going to be more renovations to HFH and he said there are plans to build at least 2 more luxury boxes, a warm-up area for the players to shoot pucks etc..., a kitchen area with cafeteria type seating and all new seating around the rink. Not sure how they plan to fit everything into that end of the rink with both zambonis being parked there. I guess its possible they could be taking out those couple of end sections on each side with the wooden benches, I think that would be sections 10,11,12 and 13, to make more room... However he wasnt sure when all this was going to be done because of the poor state of the economy.

If the whole idea is to round in 10-13 (BTW, one of those sections is where the band currently is), I would think it'd be a good idea to put the kitchen down there, possibly the warm-up area as well. The visitors' locker rooms are underneath 10-11. I would think they'd probably have cocktail tables or some sort of bar along the glass where the stage used to be, maybe the warm-up area behind that. It'd be a nice touch if they then put the band above that seating area and then the skyboxes above that to give the band a nice sound shell.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the Colonel is getting a singer to try to prevent people from yelling "Red" during the US anthem.

Plus, the girl they have doing it takes WAY too long.
funny...they play a taped recording of this rendition before the Alb. Acad. games & I hear the exact same responses from those around me...."too slowwwwwwwwwwww".

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

I talked to an opera singer once who was of the firm opinion that The Star-Spangled Banner should always be performed at a strict military tempo.

In other words, just the way the Pep Band used to perform it. (They used to perform it in a singable key, too, unlike a lot of other bands.)

I haven't been to the Field House for a game in several years, but I gather that they now have a female vocalist perform the anthem, apparently without accompaniment.

I seem to recall that there was a time when they had a male vocalist who sang the anthem along with the band. Don't know why they couldn't do it that way again.

Personally, I thought that the young lady did a great job with the anthem. A little slow, but not outrageous. She has a very good voice and is respectful of both anthems. Also, I heard more people in the stands singing along, and that made it even better.
We should all be singing along and not worrying about the tempo.

I was so upset by the Freakout outcome, that I forgot to ask this very important question.
What was that cat doing out on the ice with Puckman?
Are we changing our name again? What was the impetus for a second mascot?

Sodexho advertising? They used to bring out Tony the Tiger for that purpose during Freakout (until a group of people chewed them out for doing that when we were playing Princeton; some of which had blamed the loss on that).

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

It was the Valley Cats mascot; they were advertising opening day (even though it's the better part of five months away).

And I thought that it was Colgate's mascot :o although I couldn't figure out how it could be a (red) raider.

I haven't been to the Field House in several years, so I haven't heard the young lady. NBCSports, unfortunately, cut to commercial while the anthem was being performed at both of this year's televised games. I'll take your word for it that she has a nice voice and is respectful.

Does she or the Field House announcer invite the audience to sing along with her? If I'm at a game and there is a vocalist performing the anthem and I'm invited to sing along, I'll give it my best shot. If I'm not invited to sing along, I'll assume that the vocalist truly wants to perform solo and I will shut up and listen.

When the band performed the anthem, I always sang along.
