Plus, the girl they have doing it takes WAY too long.

I think we need to check with Ralph but I think now that we have critisized the singer that we have finally managed to go after everyone associated with the program.

Everyone except Ned's ghost. ;)

I think it's obvious we're not winning because of a lack of Puckman on merchandise. That's it.

No, it's because moving the band upset the karma of the HFH. ;)

Yes, I know that the band had already moved last year.

To be honest, its matters like these -small as they may be in the grand scheme - where an active, engaged hockey booster club can make a difference. If the booster numbers are large, and they are active (cutting checks, attending events) you will have the coaches ear on matters such as these...IMO.

There hasn't been a hockey booster club since the Friends of RPI Hockey was absorbed by Let's Go Red!, the all-sports booster club.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

So now we are blaming a young girl for our teams troubles...can we go any lower as a fanbase? For all those who want Appert gone, name a few coaches you think would do better. (Actually put some thought into it, dont just start naming people to name them.)

Also I really wish AspyDad would do more to make this team better after all its his lack of calling out local sportswriters for the team doing poorly this year. Not enough bulletin board material for them to get motivated with....

um, don't we WANT to be playing in pressure-packed games??? I believe that colloquially they are known as "playoffs"? You have to play in pressure-packed games to learn how to play in pressure-packed games!

Haha very good point. I didn't think of it that way...

He also tried to dump O Canada... that idea got nixed pretty quick.

I really, really like the fact that we have O Canada as well as The Star Spangled Banner before games. But definitely, please let us go back to having Pep Band play the anthems!!!

Not to cross thread post or anything but just wait until Bubela comes to Troy...gonna have to learn a new anthem...or will they only play it once like we did for the Russian national anthem a few years back.

At least they got a chance to hear their anthem... I don't remember them EVER playing the Slovak anthem for Valentin.

I wouldn't mind a singer if they performed it straight and at a moderate tempo, and not as if they were at the Super Bowl (although I will admit, this year was alright). I realize we're one of the last groups that should be talking about this what with the yelling we do, but that's how I see it as respectful. Showboating is not respectful. For those two minutes, it's about the countries, not you. I know that's how I always did it when I performed back where I grew up.

I'm pretty sure the Pep Band doesn't have the Slovak National Anthem in the set, but I suppose we could get it if necessary... It won't be my problem by the time he gets here!

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

I talked to an opera singer once who was of the firm opinion that The Star-Spangled Banner should always be performed at a strict military tempo.

In other words, just the way the Pep Band used to perform it. (They used to perform it in a singable key, too, unlike a lot of other bands.)

I haven't been to the Field House for a game in several years, but I gather that they now have a female vocalist perform the anthem, apparently without accompaniment.

I seem to recall that there was a time when they had a male vocalist who sang the anthem along with the band. Don't know why they couldn't do it that way again.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

A few quick things for me to add - I was at the RPI Career Fair earlier today. Saw Joel Malchuk walking around (presumably job hunting), with no appearance of injury from Saturday's game (remember he had to be helped off the ice), no limp.

For the football fans, I spoke with a few of the players today and mentioned 'sorry to hear about your coach.' Apparently they aren't exactly sad to see him go - I was told things such as he was 'pretty weird' and 'kind of a jerk.' They did seem to be enthusiastic, however, of the naming of the assistant coach as acting head coach.

To add to the Pep Band / singing banter - I agree wholeheartedly. While she has improved the Canadian anthem (no longer changes keys!), her National Anthem is painfully slow. Every time she's announced myself - and many others around me, it seems - groan loudly. If the Pep Band is announced, loud cheers erupt.
Give the Pep Band its due, and please move them back behind the glass (though I know this won't happen).

A-flat major for Star-Spangled Banner and E-flat major for O Canada are very common keys; I know I'd bring it up a couple of whole steps being a tenor (I always performed the Star Spangled Banner in C major; never performed O Canada). At the Crunch games when they're playing a Canadian team, they play O Canada on the organ in either A major or B-flat major, and it's a surprisingly comfortable range.

I like that idea of the band accompanying a singer. That'd be very nice.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

That's good news that Malchuk seems to be OK. He is so valuable on the PK which we wilol need at harvard-they have one of the potent power plays that we will see this year.
