RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Ordinarily, I wouldn't bring up football on a hockey thread during February, but when the head coach resigns, it's worthy of mention.

The RPIathletics website reports that Tim Landis resigned as head football coach yesterday, citing personal reasons.

Offensive coordinator Guido Falbo has been named acting head coach and will apparently serve in that capacity through the 2012 season.

Hope this does not put the program into a tailspin of turmoil. Sincerely hope whatever the personal reasons are for Mr Landis that they can be resolved.

Freakouts just aren't what they used to be!!!!:mad::mad:

Really what gave you that idea? I personally am sick of Freakouts being the be all end all of peoples seasons....its one game in feburary where people pretend to care what happens and then its back to the normal crowds....Freakout is a marketing tool with a ice hockey game thrown in. I could name off other college teams where every regular season game has a big time feel like the one manufactured for Freakout but I would be wasting my time. We got rid of the holiday tournament so lets shoot for getting rid of Freakout too.

If you listened to the interview with coach SA before the game-he would probably agree with you. he says he treats the BRF as any other game and attaches no significance to it. i would surmise that is true by our record in the game since he has become coach. Only problem is that it is one game at which we do seem to get a fair number of recruits to visit. Losing badly might have leave a somewhat negative taste ofr them.
I could not agree with you more though. I am fortunate enough to remember when every game had the crowd, the nosie and the spirit of the BRF. And I would not mind trading off the BRF for a return of the Invitational Tournament any time. (I know you did not include bringing back the tournament-but I loved the chance to see teams come in that we rarely saw)

If it could go wrong yesterday, it did! The team just fell apart. Sometimes these games happen. But I have to also give Colgate a lot of credit. They were fast, their passes were crisp, they had great stick handling, and they had some great plays. In my opinion they were a much better team than Cornell. That being said, I think RPI will bounce back next weekend. Go Red!

Yes, that's the perfect plan. Let's continue to get rid of traditions. Maybe if we get rid of enough of them we can one day be as good as a team without them like Union. It's more than just Freakout as well, there are several big games to the year, Black Friday, Union games, Clarkson, and Freakout and yet this year RPI has a big 0 for all of them, hell in most of the last 5 years the only one they've won consistently has been Black Friday since it's usually before the annual post-holiday letdown. I get that every game is worth equal amounts in the standings, but every team in sports puts a bit more emphasis on the special games, so Appert saying that Freakout is just another game is either him trying to motivate the team for all 22 league games or him covering for the rather pathetic record in the event.

If it means we are winning games then sure lets get rid of them all.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Just my thoughts on last nights game.
We came out hard and strong. Pushing the play and being physical, but we totally forgot about playing defense. When we made it 2-1, the fans got back in the game and I thought that we were on our way. But once again, the defense fell apart.
After the fourth Colgate goal, the team lost all focus. They were playing like they never met each other. They did not quit, they just stopped playing as a team. They panicked. Diebold was not ready to come in, and the team did nothing to help him get comfortable. When they went back to Merriam, I was thinking that it would be a good time to give Coupal a shot, but I am not sure how that would have gone over with the administration, (it might look like we gave up).
At 6-1, my wife said that it was a good thing that this game wasn't on NBCsports. I was thinking exactly the same thing.
Don't know where we go from here, but I sure hope that last night was the bottom.

Ill take a guess and say hes been using that same approach for our rivalry games against Union considering our performances vs them recently. Not only is the freakout a popular game to bring recruits in for a visit, how about all the former players/alumni that travel in from all over the US and Canada to take in the event...

We don't seem to do that well in games with puckman actually in attendance, maybe we should get rid of the mascot as well, sure the team has a better academic record than a lot of opponents, but that doesn't translate into wins, maybe they should work to lower admissions standards. Where do you draw the line on what get's thrown out in the pursuit of nothing but wins.

On the way home from the game last night my wife mentioned that they really haven't appeared to be a team very much this year, it seems to be a bunch of individuals who happen to be wearing the same colors. I think that aside for Chase, what was lost in the graduation was a lot of role players and grit, and instead we brought in a bunch of high-scorers who are used to being the top guy and may not be willing to do the dirty unrecognized things that help a team to win.

I was being sarcastic when saying lets get rid of them all....I have said before that its just a game and that we send out fine young men to other careers beyond hockey. Im not a what have you done for me lately type person. But sadly, thats what happens these days.

I get the oh we lost Chase and Tyler and so on line. That was great to use in October. Here we are in Feburary and for that reasoning to still be used as a viable "excuse" on why this team isnt doing well just doesnt cut it for me. Something is wrong with the makeup of this team and its up to the coaching staff and whoever is a team leader in that locker room to work it out.

Im moving on from this weekend and looking towards our next game vs. Harvard, I hope others can as well and this doesnt turn into a week long debate over the pros and cons of Freakout or Apperts records in it.

I'm sure his record doesn't bother SA based on the way he was throwing them back at the Alumni House after the game, once the team FINALLY showed up!!

You just got beat 8-3 and then realize oh yeah we gotta go deal with people who probably left in the 2nd period to get to the free food...lets hurry up and run right over there. I stayed the entire game, left and went to Saratoga so I cannot comment on if Coach Appert was being human and drinking with alumni...thanks for the update, did he have any snacks too or is that too much to ask?

I was not at the Alumni House, so I don't know what went on there. But your comments are just a bit harsh.
Do you think that the team didn't need some extra time before going out to the public that they just disappointed? The fact that they showed up shows some class in itself.
As for Appert having a couple of drinks after that game, I would be surprised if he didn't.
You can't expect the team or the coach to come out smiling after a game like that.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Oh well at least I don't think we're going to finish last. Brown seems to be on a free fall.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Quite frankly, if we have to rely on crowd gimmicks for the team to be noticed and for people to go to games, then we don't have much of a team or a fanbase. Obviously you and I know that isn't true because we have a regular attendance of people that would sell out a majority of the rinks in the league, and we travel to away games quite well. Look at the groups that are also around: Collar City Madmen, First Church of RPI Hockey, Go Be Red, and so on.

Pensfan08's wife summed it up well: Great players, horrible team. I've been saying that since November. We have terrific athletes that have a tremendous amount of talent and proudly wear those letters on the backs of their jerseys.

I intend on hearing a 130 minute effort from the team this Friday and Saturday. Win, lose, or tie, that's what I want to hear.

Quick question about the game itself:

On the 3rd Colgate goal that was an absolute buzz killer, why was icing waived off? From my seat on the Troy side I couldn't see whether the puck was deflected by a forechecker or some other reason for it. The bench didn't argue so perhaps it was obvious from the other side. Did anyone get a good look?
