RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

That call was actually explained in an NHL game earlier this week.
It seems that if you don't hit the man as he is getting rid of the puck, he has the right to chase it down without intervention. My guess is that the defenseman has one step to get the hit in.

So it's not OK to stand you rman up at the blue line which is exactly what was done(actually he dumped him on his behind) but it is OK to do it along the boards when you shoot it in and try to go by along the boards(as we tried several times last night)? I find it inconsistent to say the least.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

BTW - I believe that Cornell was offside on second goal.

It appeared so on first glance-but on replay it was not so clear and i could understand the linesmen not calling it. Overall not a horribly called game and the linesmen pretty much dropped the puck better than I have seen and called almost all the questionable offsides correctly. I was surprised though that Baker did not call something on Joel Malchuk for the hit of the game.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

We didn't need Kerry Fraser to tell us that the ECAC officiating has issues, but it is still nice to here from a referee. :p

Why shouldn't we? Stewart and company might actually listen to someone that has had referee experience, especially as it refutes their accolades argument.

I am only repeating what was said during a game on TV. I assume that the same rule applies to hitting on the boards, but that is not called as often as the open ice hit.
I don't like it either, but that seems to be the way it is going to be.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Bad call. He stood him up at blue line which is what Guy was suppose to do. You don't make that call in a physical 2-2 game. Paul Stewart needs to go.. it's not getting better. Nice to see Mike S. belly aching after the game to refs..things never change.

Kerry Fraser and I both agree with you. But they still called the penalty and missed the elbow to the head. Great job by the ECAC officiating team.:confused::mad:

Stewart will be happy to tell you that he was also an NHL referee, and an NHL player, and nobody knows the game better than he does.:o

So because Fraser never played, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Never mind that he has worked Olympic games... while wearing the orange armband.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

I'm shocked that Bailen didn't get a penalty when he tripped the Cornell player on his scoring attempt in the 3rd period.

Well you shouldn't be, ECAC officials are equally bad for all teams. They only call what they see (and sometimes what they think they see). They will not discriminate.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

I will be at the game tonight, I will be behind the visitors bench between the 2nd and 3rd periods if anyone wants to meet.
Hope to see some of you, tonight.

Some calls are made by sound-they see nothing but it sure sounded like a penalty.:)

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Maybe I'm oversimplifying but it seems to me that there was once this league call the ECAC which had an East and a West division. There also was this "Ivy" Division too but that's another story. I believe the champion in the final year of that league was some little engineering school in NY. No one back then talked about how we couldn't compete with the big boys.

Spot on. The fan base here appears beaten down worrying about competing with the big boys...

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

HE has been an extremely unbalanced league. It's the "best league" because of a handful of "haves", not because it provides strong top to bottom competition and opportunity. The same teams show up in the top 4 or 5 with an occasional "have not" (e.g. Merrimack) sneaking up into the top 3 before quickly falling back without so much as a regular season or tournament title. BC, BU, UNH or Maine has won every regular season title in the league's 27 year history and the last 15 tournaments. In fact, it may actually be getting more lopsided as either BC or BU has won every tournament in the last 7 years. By contrast, there have been 5 different ECAC champions in those 7 years (Cornell and Yale winning twice along with one each for Princeton, Clarkson and Harvard). In a couple of years HE will add ND to the mix of haves. There is no reason not to expect that it will be BC, BU, UNH, ND (and maybe Maine) dominating every year.

in the 23 years leading up to "the Split" there were 10 different ECAC tournament champions, in a league that varied from 15-17 teams, ~ 60% of the competitors won.

Since the split, there have been 8 different champions, which is 75% of competitors winning.

In Hockey East, there have been 6 different tourney champs, in a league that has varied from 8-11 competitors, ~ 60% winning.

I'm not sure there's enough of an imbalance in these numbers to claim superiority, w/ the exception of BC and BU. But, I don't think that's the argument here.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Did anyone go to the alumni game and have a list of who was there?

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Ordinarily, I wouldn't bring up football on a hockey thread during February, but when the head coach resigns, it's worthy of mention.

The RPIathletics website reports that Tim Landis resigned as head football coach yesterday, citing personal reasons.

Offensive coordinator Guido Falbo has been named acting head coach and will apparently serve in that capacity through the 2012 season.
