Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

Page two? On a game day?

Glad we're using the weekend thread though!

Some weeks we use the weekend thread; some weeks we don't. Then there is the UConn Tourney thread which UConn fans are still using. One would think they could start there own thread for general use, but ... :P

Even Kerry Fraser thinks that the ECAC officiating has some issues. The call on Guy in the 3rd was awful. Nice gut check 3rd by our Engineers.

They have one, but are too gosh darn lazy to find it.

Also, my deepest sympathies to JL and other surviving family members.

We didn't need Kerry Fraser to tell us that the ECAC officiating has issues, but it is still nice to here from a referee. :p

I've said it before that I hate that interference call at the blue line when a d-man finishes his check. Why call it there and not at other spots on the ice? A few minutes later Burgdoerfer poked the puck along the boards and the defenseman finished his check as Greg tried to squeeze by. It wasn't a particularly good check and I don't think it was a penalty either, but it should be treated no differently than the play at the blue line.

Re: RPI 2011-12 Part V: Don't Stop Believing

I agree that was a soft call on Leboeuf at a crucial time, but the reffing was really good overall, I thought. Offsides and icing calls were sharp (although the linesmen missed one on Cornell late in OT that led to some sustained chance). Also, the NBC Sports announcers were really great. Definitely gave both teams a fair shout. Great effort by our boys in the third period, we really outskated and even showed more skill than them. All our underclassmen - even our grinders - really have some skill working that puck behind the net. We've got to keep skating hard, forechecking aggressively, and see if we can't keep sneaking up the standings. If nothing else, we can give ourselves some momentum for next season, where we bring everyone back.

Leonard is a stud back on D. Great at moving the puck. I think Bailen just needs to get this season over with and start fresh - he's a half-step slow this season.

Good to comeback from 2 down against the North Koreans....the swim team looked pretty impressive this year. Tough that we couldnt find the net a 3rd time to take both points last night. Hope the team can build off the 3rd period and come out fired up for the Freakout tonight. Im sure the upperclassmen have a few bones to pick with Colgate after last seasons playoff series.

All true. Some of our defensemen did give up some bad turnovers but Merriam was very solid against a number of good chances against him. I thought the hit by Malchuk was just a bomb-and i thought for sure the ref would call it a penalty even though it looked legal to me. Not sure what effect it had on the Cornell defense for the rest of the game but seemed like a turning point to me. I still have real problems understnading the penalty calls when a defenseman stands hi man up at the blue line after the player has carried the puck in or shot it in and tries to keep going-to me that is just good defensive play and not interference.

That call was actually explained in an NHL game earlier this week.
It seems that if you don't hit the man as he is getting rid of the puck, he has the right to chase it down without intervention. My guess is that the defenseman has one step to get the hit in.

Bad call. He stood him up at blue line which is what Guy was suppose to do. You don't make that call in a physical 2-2 game. Paul Stewart needs to go.. it's not getting better. Nice to see Mike S. belly aching after the game to refs..things never change.

There is something mildly amusing by hearing it from an independent 3rd party on national TV - referring to a call as "questionable"... and "I wouldn't have called it" - and also speak incredulously about missed call when a Cornell player threw an obvious elbow to the head of an RPI player during a stoppage in play however, the game in general was better called than some past RPI/Cornell games I have had the (dis)pleasure of watching the refs decide the outcome of.
