Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

Trust me...in no way has JDA entered my thought process for this discussion; he has been labeled by the Leafs based on his performance...and I think Burke kind of has a good eye for these things...;) You and I agree that it is the player like the BRO who must not get caught up in the hoopla...take good counsel and keep working your trade. If it's meant to be, the moment will present itself. Too many players rush to get there, only to find out it's a tough business. Men play this game...men with families and bills to pay...if you're gonna' get someone else's job, you gonna' have to fight him for it (maybe not literally, but maybe literally). I know the trend is toward the junior route vs. college. But in short order, the NCAA can make the case in a way that illustrates the pitfalls. It's called Marketing. The CHL does it...jmo
Agree 100%

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

the idea that they liked BRO's upside and wanted to know if he'd consider foregoing his NCAA eligibility and signing a 3 year deal. While our advisor is a strong college advocate, he was obliged to bring it to our attention and we decided to go through the exercise. We had no intention of actually doing this and the B.R.O. had been well prepped to keep his ears open and mouth shut (you think he's tough; you should see the Hubster and me in action:D ). The deal would have paid about 130K/year in major jr.(unless he moved up).

I have always understood that if a player signs a entry level contract ,they can not be paid playing Major Junior , they do get some of there signing bonus but that is all . Maybe i have missed something but I believe you were misinformed so it is a good idea that you did not follow through and lose your NCAA eligibility .

"Article 9.4 of the CBA states that a major junior player may receive a max salary of $10.5k while playing major junior."

I think I said 'about' 130k...a player still receives the signing bonus based on 10% of the entry level max (about 90K)...there were many numbers 'thrown out there' (the lower pro leagues were mentioned and I don't even know what that comes to) during that time and we weren't taking notes because it was an exercise on our part...not a negotiation. So forgive my math error but I'm in the ball park and I know we made the right decision. That's why I told the story

I'm not bringing a video camera, and I don't have a digital camera (with the exception of my cell phone, and its quality is about as good as Ben Affleck's acting skills).

Cornell will probably just complain to h*** h*** and knowing how susceptible the refs are to Schafer's whining, the BRO will probably get thrown out.

Hahaha! I was referring to video from game footage...I would never ask you to film anything! :o

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

I concur. The 'meat market' mentality drills way down into the ranks of young players. I can only speak from our experience, so this little ditty illustrates the 'bait & hook' that waits out there for the weak of conviction: long before our commitment to RPI, the B.R.O. was approached, through our advisor, by a GM in the NHL. He floated (I use that word as the 'bait' portion of the fishing expedition) the idea that they liked BRO's upside and wanted to know if he'd consider foregoing his NCAA eligibility and signing a 3 year deal. Long story short, the 3 year entry agreement has a dirty little portion to it that states if the player doesn't develop enough to make it to the show after the 3 years, the team reserves the right to extend their property rights (can't remember the length of time...a year? Two?) on the player. Sounds good? Maybe. But there is no requirement for remuneration attached to that portion (I call that the hook) . Where could we have ended up? Naugatuck Valley Community College and a part time job at Stop & Shop local supermarket...
Instead, Monty, SA and Vines will groom him and RPI will prepare him for the life he'll lead after hockey. Our advisor is one of the VERY few who will not represent a player who is not NCAA-minded. That's why we chose him.

Thanks for the post. It's always interesting to read such things from someone who has seen it basically first hand.

Impressively laid out...the facts always seem to defeat the perfectly emotional reactions. Not to mention: what player wouldn't want to come play for a head coach who is a dead ringer for Otter in Animal House? Marketing experts also conclude that the woman of the household sways the decision making process in many consumer areas...most moms of players would agree that SA is a bit easy on the eyes...

Her size three is women's sizing? That makes her a size one in men's...she is a petite Jenny! :) Thar may have been the size ofthe B.R.O.'s first baby shoe...

Yup-sneakers are not a problem since she can buy kids shoes. But buying heels and fashion shoes has always been a chore. She has had to have her shoes custom made in Europe. Especially difficult because at 4"10" she does like to wear the highest heels available(usually 5""). She is petite but has that hot Italian temper.
Years ago when Steve McKenna came into Troy playing for UMass and was 6'10"(or so) she stood next to him in one of the local bars and came up to his navel.

RC, great take. We're finally back on the map because of Coach. Jerry leaving in the long run is a good thing because as you said the elite recruits will see the progression of JDA. The program is very accessible to us - the fans. The staff he has assembled is top notch. I'm actually worried that Coach will be on the move to a program closer to home if he starts rattling off the wins but in the meantime let's enjoy. Plus, even his detractors (hokydad and his ilk) have to admit .. Coach does have the best hair in Div 1 Hockey coaching fraternity :p

I believe in Seth Appert

I agree that SA can and will use JDA's leaving to help the program.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

I haven't really paid attention to all of the coaches' hair. :)

I thought you might call me on that so I give you the following quote from a WaP article with Coach from a few years ago citing him as, "... the man with the best hair in college hockey"

Source http://www.withoutapeer.com/2010/02/hes-only-man-in-funny-red-sheet.html

Doctor Baer, I know your a man of science so my citation is "peer" reviewed.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-season thread V: Captain Kennedy and the A-Team

I am leaning to not having a separate recuit thread this year. Does anyone have an opinion one way or the other on this?

Personally-if it isn't too much work for you-the separate thread does make it easier to follow the recruit's progress. I know in the past I checked it daily as you already know. With all the newer contributors, I think we will fill up in season threads very rapidly. Just MHO

Actually, it is easier if there is a separate thread, because it is easier to find a previous game of a recruit to quote and then edit if it isn't 20 pages back. :)
