WGY of old is alot different than the WGY of today so I wouldnt count on them jumping at the chance to air RPI hockey instead of whatever nationally syndicated show they would be airing at that time.

They already break from the nationally syndicated shows. As I said, it is to broadcast bouncy-ball out here.

Let me just start by saying I worked for the company that owns WGY for a few years in promotions so I may miss some technical aspects of this but here goes. As much as I hate saying this, SU basketball makes WGY more cash ad wise than RPI hockey would. Plus WGY just has to have someone at the station to run the board and make sure the feed gets over the air. Throw in whatever it cost to get the rights to broadcast the games and it doesnt really cost WGY much to broadcast the SU games.

If they were to broadcast RPI hockey games they would have to make sure SU basketball isnt on at the same time like said here before, they would have to have someone to do play by play, have an engineer go to each game to make sure the equipment works, another person running the board back at the station and Im sure other things Im forgetting to make a broadcast go off smooth. And with the state of the radio business and economy WGY or any of the local radio stations would need to be assured a steady positive income to switch from broadcasting SU games to RPI games.

On a personal note, I enjoy WRPI and its broadcast of RPI hockey, football, baseball and any other sports they may do. Something about the reggae music before an RPI hockey game makes me laugh every time I tune in. :D

Sorry for the long post and like I said Im sure I am forgetting a ton of stuff to make a broadcast go off smooth.

When WGY carried RPI hockey, theirs was a completely separate production from WRPI's.

As I recall from my student days in the late '60's, WRPI's announcers were current students, while WGY's play-by-play man was former Engineer Paul Midghall.

That is my recollection also.

Today is 15 July 2010. There are 85 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 8 October for the start of next season.

Thanks, JCrawford. Though one thing I didn't necessarily understand with the student packages was that they wouldn't include the tournament games while the dorms were open, but would include winter break games while the dorms were closed. Granted I know there's family visitation involved, and more people had apartments at the time (not sure if the frat houses still had residents as well, I wasn't in a frat so I don't know how that works).

WRPI coverage of sports has certainly improved in the past few years.
It would be difficult to run those on a commercial staion for the reasons you mentioned.
The only way you would get a commercial staion to broadcast the games is if someone was to purchase the air time and then sell sponsorships on their own.
With the new marketing person, this may be a possiblity in future years. The most effective way to make this happen is to package everything, program and dasher ads, PA announcements, promotional night and radio spots as a package, with various levels of participation.

RPI was already doing radio ads and dasher ads with other radio stations as it is. Trying to carve out time on any local station to do broadcasts is a battle that will never happen because it means spending more money on something that isn't likely to bring you more revenue in return. The occasional Time Warner TV broadcasts are as good as it'll get for RPI as local big stick radio stations won't even dare do anything.

I recall WRVE (99.5 FM) doing RPI hockey in the late 1990s, but that was the last time I recall anyone but WRPI in on it.

I agree with all of this, and would add that with internet radio, there really is less of a need for over the air broadcasts... If WRPI would do a post game show with player/coach interviews, I'd be all set. In a dream world RPI - TV would broadcast all games -- home and away. I wonder if RHam could hazard a guess as to what that bill might add up to for an entire season?? I'd be interested to know. :D As for the T-W games, I wish they'd broadcast some away games -- Colgate and Cornell -- might work geographically. As glad as I am that they are producing them, broadcasting RPI home games is useless for me as I attend them.

I'm sure Dr. Baer or someone else has posted but here is an interesting feature on JL for the heck of it.

I think that is the last interview of JL...gawd knows the S-F is incapable of it. As I said at the time, JL mentioned his goals several times, but the interviewer apparently failed to draw him out as to what those goals are...

TW broadcasts the away games at Colgate. I know on their schedule they say only TW Syracuse will pick it up, but unless there's another team playing locally, TW will broadcast the games to other places across the state; I know I've seen a few Union and SLU games here. Of course they won't include it on the On Demand unless it's local, but it's still nice that they've started to spread the broadcasting.

One thing that does irk me when TW shows up is the exclusive rights issue (RHam, correct me if I'm wrong on this one) where RPI TV then is not able to broadcast the game. I know it was an "unofficial webcast" last year, but if RPI TV plans to make the broadcast available to alums or to others for a price, it'd be nice to also have the games where TW is around. Granted I'll have season tickets again (hello huge gas bill), but it'd still be nice in case I have to sell off the ticket for any reason in not being able to go out there.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread IV -- It's Looking Like No "I-V" Is Necessary!

Dubuque forward John Gaudreau - who joined Curadi and Quinn as a pre-draft tender player - led the USA Select 17 development camp in scoring (5-7-12) and has been named to the U18 Select team that will compete in the Hlinka tourney to be held Aug. 9-14 in Czech.

Gaudreau is a 5'7" 140 '93 who played for Comcast (AAA) last season. He hails from Doc's neck of the woods -- Carney’s Point, N.J. While he is small, Monty like him so much he burned a tender on him, and described him at that time as kid "known for his dynamics...a scorer who plays with courage in the dirty areas...scores dirty goals..."

It isn't RPI TV that makes RPI games available at a price, it is B2livetv.com. They get the RPI TV feed and sell it to the public (at lower resolution  ) with the 'Tute and RPI TV not getting anything for it. They also broadcast the games that TW has.

This has been true, however I seem to recall someone stating on here that RPI is losing the B2 contract, and RPI TV would be doing all of the televised publicity not involving a commercial TV station on their own.

I missed that. Not much of a loss really. Although I won't be able to watch the games that RPI TV isn't doing, B2 was often very aggravating to use.

No, B2 is losing the RPI contract. Let's not confuse who was making money off who.
