Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Brock Higgs will be playing on the Black Aces Red Team in the Chowder Cup Pre-Draft Showcase starting tomorrow http://stats.proamhockey.com/stats/roster.php?step=&sub=&season_id=31&team_id=1026

Schedule http://stats.proamhockey.com/stats/schedule.php?date=2010-05-07

The only other player whom I noticed with a connection to RPI is Terrence Wallin. We lost him to UML.

A familiar coach http://stats.proamhockey.com/stats/roster.php?step=&sub=&season_id=31&team_id=1048 and another http://stats.proamhockey.com/stats/roster.php?step=&sub=&season_id=31&team_id=45. They sort of go together. ;)

The article, perhaps by design, still does not do a good job of describing what the precise reason for JL not being here next here is. Did we not want him? Does he not want to show up? RC, can you shed any more light?

I realize that both you and/or Weaver may be working off sources such that you can't go into more detail.

I really ought to not delve much deeper, lest I cause some kind of international incident. :) To my knowledge, language and academics really aren't an issue, it's the maturity the whole way.

True. But, playing in the CJHL is not an easy way to get the attention necessary from scouts to play in the pros. And it's also unlikely to get him to grow up any more.

Well, no, but if he knows what's best for a player of his size (he may not), college is the route to the pros for him. Major junior makes the road tougher, especially if his work ethic is lacking. He's likely to get swallowed up in the CHL anyway, but if he is lazy than he's got no chance whatsoever.

True. There are a large number of forwards fighting for ice time next season. A highly-touted recruit sitting on the bench / in the press box eating up scholarship money because he doesn't immediately succeed doesn't do us much good.

Well, it's not so much a case of whether he immediately succeeds or not as much as it is that hockey is a team sport. If JL comes into town as the crown prince and lollygags in practice and in games, it has a detrimental effect on other players. We already had an issue this season with some of the guys "wanting it to be easy" as Appert put it. But yes, with a number of solid forwards on our roster - and it's quite possible that Tinordi, Higgs, and/or Rogic will pan out to be solid forwards too (Burgdoerfer's going to be a solid addition to the checking line) - we don't want the soap opera to still be going on in Troy.

Again, true (unfortunately). All of your statements are true. But they don't delve into some of the semi-deeper issues. Of course, that's also a result of having to deal with this saga for the past two years.

That's by design. I don't need to go upsetting the apple cart, as it were. You might want to read the last two WaP entries through the scope of knowing that much of what Weaver wrote about JL was something I was mostly aware of at the time.

Not to pat myself on the back here or anything, but Bo Dolan was a guy I had initially picked out of a lineup when we heard that Seth was going to be out and about recruiting in the west when we got confused looking at the former Minnesota defenseman (who will now play at UConn).
Doing a quick search on Bo, it looks like he's not afraid to drop the gloves. :D

Im loving the way the D is shaping up for us for the next couple years.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

Wow. That was a big time repudiation of JL from SA. With all due respect to Ed, he doesn’t having any other source on this than SA. I think SA is saying to the hardcore RPI folks that we don’t want this kid. Too many headaches. Contemplating the whole saga, it’s probably best because we don’t want to have the chemistry screwed up on the team. One more sniper is not what we need. Look at Helfrich, in many ways he wilted when the big two came in last year. We don’t need an incoming frosh playing the “me” game. As Monty said at the banquet, it is tough to leave because SA and he thought the coming year was “our year” and we don't need someone coming in and being a distraction especially a frosh. I wish JL well but SA is closing the door on this kid. Enjoying everyone’s comments. Props to the great threadmaster in the sky (RB) who kept it real on the prospects of JL coming.

Helfrich didn't stop producing because Pirri and D'Amigo came in last year. Helfrich "wilted" because he was injured and he hit a slump, like most sophomores. A factor that I also saw was that because of the injuries, he was juggled on lines for quite a bit. It's hard to develop chemistry and have that sixth sense of where your teammates are if you don't practice with the same linemates for more than a few weeks.

Shame on you for trying to say that Helfrich played the "me, me, me" game.

I don't think closing the door on Laliberte is the right move here unless the feeling is that he's unredeemable. RPI and JL can still be beneficial to each other, but the onus is on JL to make the right decisions and commit himself to hockey. If he doesn't want to work hard on the ice, he won't work hard in the classroom either, and that's an even bigger problem. If he puts his head down and works hard in junior A this upcoming season - as many have said, hopefully he's willing to move to the USHL to do this - he could be an apt replacement for Polacek and/or D'Amigo in 2011 (keeping fingers crossed that Jerry sticks around for his junior year but not holding my breath).

JL commited to RPI before Pirri and D'Amigo did. He probably thought that he would become the star at RPI. He played on the same Canada East team as Pirri two years ago. Pirri had significantly better numbers. At that time he probably realized that he would not necessarily be the go-to guy at RPI. Conceivably that is at least part of what is bothering him.

A good point also about classroom work at RPI.

Admirable defense of TH. I hear where your coming from. I concede he was hurt some of the season but he was also a healthy scratch late in the year. I didn't say TH was playing "me" game, I said he "wilted". There's a difference to me. I have great hopes for him this year.

WaP updates with the latest information, including a pair of Johnny Rogic videos and two Dolan scraps (h/t redhead18 for pointing those out here).

RC thanks for clearing up the commenting on recruits piece. Noted. I hear what your saying about not burning a bridge w JL but seemed like some finality in Ed's piece on the issue. Maybe I'm just feeling jilted today. BTW- didn't want to cast any aspersions on Ed. He does a fine job, especially noting he works for a rag. Ed is also a Conservative :D

There is probably a reason he works for a "rag."

He's also a Sabres fan. ;)

But do remember that we found this on his blog, not the official paper (I don't know if there is a difference; I assume there is, though it is on the Record's website).

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

This is interesting. Per the New Haven Register:

http://hssportsnhr.blogspot.com/2010/05/ice-hockey-nds-curadi-commits-to-rpi.html

Former Notre Dame of West Haven multi-sport athlete Luke Curadi (2009 graduate), who resides in Cheshire, signed a National Letter of Intent to play hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Monday morning.

Curadi will actually spend next hockey season playing for the DuBuque Fighting Saints in the United States Hockey League before enrolling at RPI in the Fall of 2011 in time for the 2011-2012 season.
Curadi played varsity hockey his first three years at Notre Dame. He also played football and track as a freshman and lacrosse as a sophomore before devoting himself full-time to hockey.

During his senior year, Curadi played for the Hartford Junior Wolf Pack before going to the British Columbia Hockey League last season. As a member of the Penticton Vees, Curadi played in 58 of the teams’ 60 games and scored seven goals and added 10 assists as a defenseman. Penticton finished second in its division with a 48-8 record. They were eliminated in the semifinal round of the league playoffs.

Interesting.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread II -- We Can Rebuild Them. We Have the Technology!

The Alberni Valley's press conference indeed stated that Graham is leaving. His replacement was also named. http://hammersdogs.blogspot.com/2010/05/bulldogs-announce-nolan-graham-stepping.html

Edit: I had forgotten that Brian Vines had previously been an AC for Alberni Valley.

You'd think, especially given that they mentioned Vines by name in that article, that they would have mentioned that Graham is going to be working with Vines in Troy - although maybe they didn't mention that at the conference since RPI hasn't made an official announcement yet, but it's kind of an open secret.

I had that thought too, and I think that you are correct. Also I linked the blog not an official site. The official site now just says he's going to the NCAA. http://www.albernivalleybulldogs.ca/leagues/front_pageBulldogs.cfm?clientID=1009&leagueID=1577

We'll see if anything pops up tomorrow in AV's newspaper. They also still haven't mentioned Rogic on the offical site or the blog.

Rare miss, Ralph. Rare miss.

RPI Athletics hockey fans are also blogging about the possibility that Bulldogs’ defenceman Johnny Rogic has been recruited to the team.

Rogic had not committed with any university or college team by the end of the Bulldogs’ BCHL season.

He's a forward, of course, and most of that seems to be lifted from WaP, but... yeah. :p

This is "their year" and Appert has done an outstanding job pulling everything together with Monty's departure-it is too bad Monty won't be here to enjoy the success after all the hard work and brutal days of the rebuild. I already feel the excitement in the air!! Regarding Helfrich-I predict he rebounds his senior year and this senior class is going to take us on a really fun and exciting ride. All aboard the RPI EXPRESS!
