Was anyone here aware that Tyler Eaves is an assistant coach at UAH?

No. I am pretty sure that has never come up on an RPI thread before.

News to me...I don't see him on their website?? I notice that UAH head Danton Cole has accepted the USNDTP U-17 job...

A whole lot will of course depend on the money offered. I agree completely that 3 years at RPI is almost a given-if the financial offer at that time is substantial, he would be foolish not to take it. Playing a 4th year in college and risking injury which could preclude a future in the NHL would be silly. Players like Cavosie and Tapper saw their chance come up and they took it. No one could blame Pirri or D'Amigo for doing the same. But in my opinion they are both a couple of years away from that level where it would make any sense. I am of course selfish and would love to see then stay at RPI for the full 4 years, but I am also a realist and understand the pressures in making that decision. Then again I am talking out of the same orifice;)

The 6/7/10 print edition of THN had a few good pieces related to this...one of them was about Jonathan Toews and talked about his early H.S. graduation and histwo year stint at UND, also their draft section talked junior players and the importance of timing of when to go pro and how you may only get one chance to make the NHL...and how the hazard of going too early can impact a player...if you struggle you can sometimes be labelled as a "miss" ...left to toil in the ECHL or AHL with no guarantee of another shot at the bigs.

Cap doesn't really come into play so much unless he's going directly to the NHL. The Hawks are going to have to clear out space this year so they can ice a team next season and some of their guys in Rockford are going to have to get NHL time, but not that many. Guys like Bickell and Jack Skille will get a better shot now, but Pirri taking off sooner for the AHL reeks of bad ideas.

I really think he'll be here for three years. He has to get stronger to even deal with guys in the AHL. Lots of grizzled veterans there looking to teach young kids a lesson. Of course, if Brandon has a huge year this year and the team goes far and he plays a major role in their success Chicago might want him sooner than not.

Good points all GLM. The 6/7 THN mentioned that assuming the 'Hawks are able to move Huet and his $5.6 mil salary (a big IF) Chicago would have roughly $4.8 million on hand to sign something like 5 or 6 UFA's on the team (sorry I don't have the piece in front of me) including Niemi.

on the UAH hockey website, Tyler Eaves is listed as an Assistant Volunteer Coach for 2009-2010....also noticed that their alltime wins for a goalie is Derreck Puppa 1992-96??

Great article. I'd say he probably doesn't have THAT much adversity seeing as how he was the first one targeted by the Canadian radio presenters at 3AM. However, it's great to hear this behind the scenes story, and I'm sure his motivation will continue as both a successful professional hockey player and businessman.

Derek is Darren's brother.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season III -- How we learned to stop worrying and love the Class of '14

Keep in mind, that's just my stupid opinion. I have absolutely no idea what any of these guys want to do and a player's wants/needs have as much to do with things as the team that owns their rights.

I'm basically mostly talking out my arse. :)

Great analysis of the situation. Thanks for taking the time. I know BP strength will be predominant factor in determining whether he goes pro. I just don't want Dale Tallon's fax issue to be why he takes off early:D I'm looking forward to the NHL draft and hoping GMH will have some of your takes this week. Peace. AD

Today is 22 June 2010. There are 108 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 8 October for the start of next season.

Steven Beyers, RPI target, in a HS lacrosse uniform http://www.thestar.com/sports/highschool/athleteoftheweek/article/808156--steven-beyers. Not a great HS average. (I am surprised that they post this information, but it has happened with others too.)

I don't think that this was posted earlier http://www.stcatharinesstandard.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?archive=true&e=1183195. Beyers went to the Sudbury camp last year, and I assume that he paid his own way and stayed less than 48 hours.
In the words of Sudbury Star sports editor Bruce Heidman last Friday, Steven Beyers' "jaw-dropping speed and sick hands were the buzz of the opening day" of training camp.
Sounds indeed like SA's type of player.

Edit: I should add that the article states that Beyers was cut, while the truth is probably that he left on his own volition so as not to lose his NCAA eligibility.

Sounds like a pretty good catch if we can get him. His 73% average might be OK if his school was like Brooklyn Tech or Stuyvesant or even Bronx High School of Science;)

The article in the Sudbury Star about Beyers mentioned in my previous post http://www.sudburystar.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?archive=true&e=1178036.
Steven Beyers picked up the puck at centre ice without breaking stride and charged down the side boards with an impressive head of steam. A veteran defenceman was laying in wait and angling to cut off the rookie hopeful's lane to the ne. He slid over to take his out his target, but it was much too late. Beyers, skating with his head up all the way, hit an extra gear, causing the blueliner to whiff badly, his hip missing its intended target by three feet or more.

Then, Beyers finished it off, his hands and stick a blur of moves from the hash marks in, the flopping goalie left with no chance as the puck went straight up into the roof of the net with Beyers cruising past the lip of the crease.
etc.

He doesn't have DrD size, but I will take him. :)

Has Jayson Moy been paying you off to say that Stuyvesant is better than Science? :D

Seriously, Stuyvesant is better ranked these days, but it wasn't as far as I remember when I was in HS. Then Science had the new building and facilities, and the Bronx had not yet turned into a vast combat zone. Also, Science was the only competitive academic school in NYC at the time that was coed meaning that there was a larger base of potential students.

Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season III -- How we learned to stop worrying and love the Class of '14

Saw the Curradi kid at his USHL camp, did nothing to impress. There is a reason why he was cut last year and ended up in BCHL. He will not be a big help at RPI. On or off the ice.

Looked like an idiot trying to fight a kid 5'6" 165 lbs in all star game after he got tooled and scored on. The nhl guy I was watching game with said , "exactly as billed", "total waste of size"

Hopefully Montgomery can work some wonders with him and teach him how to be a shut down player. Zero offensive upside and was toasted 1/1 several times by kids 2 and 3 years younger.
