Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

The hand wringing came from what I saw on Dubuque's PP in Youngstown and discussion was brought up over here. Our power play has significantly improved, I do not doubt you there whatsoever.

IMHO, it isn't as good as last season, but it is better than early this season.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

I understand that the off week has given folks time to chat but I'm having trouble with all of the PP hand wringing. If memory serves, weren't all four goals we scored vs. Union Sat.night special teams goals ? (3 PP and 1 SHG.) This against a very good team with a very good goalie. From where I come from, that's a pretty good night.

Add in Bailen's marker the night before (scored just as the PP expired) along with the disallowed goal when RPI was on the PP, and I'm hard pressed to be worried about our PP.

WS-read my post again-where did I say i was not satisified with our recent play on the power play-I was just agreeing with FD08 that it where our emphasis has to be. For this season to go well-we need to be able to keep this power play ranked highly.

Both sides of special teams need to be doing well. Let's see if we can get our PK back to the form we had in our NC play, I think we went 21 straight without a GA. We gave up a number of opportunities against Union (I know, I know, #1 on the Power Play), and that's how we lost in the Harvard game. Further disciplining our game and staying out of the box will also help with this, but we can't just depend on that, because there will always be penalties.

OK - my bad. But your bad for talking about DBQ's PP on this thread. :D

Actually, no. I had mentioned it on the recruit thread. I may have mentioned RPI's PP subsequently over there, in which case the discussion was moved over here. ;)

This is not a slight on Ken Schott but lets call a spade a spade he is not an unbiased source of college hockey information he is a beat reporter for Union Hockey plain and simple you only need to know that he attends most if not all games home and away enough said.Just the fact that he scoured our thread to see what people had to say speaks volumes. It appears our man Mr.Schott has a case of rabbitt ears.I enjoy and sometimes look forward to his radio appearance every thursday and his pre and post game interviews and will continue to enjoy them, but I know what to expect when I click the mouse...a Union Homer...nothing wrong w/that as long as you don't pretend to be otherwise...I'll let Him decide if He's a CONTENDER for Mr.College Hockey or a PRETENDER....Not my call...All I have is an opinion which I thought was the whole idea of a blog/thread and not a place for a legit reporter...Oh Well

I seem to recall you mentioning something recently about special teams need fixing...which I consider hand wringing. If I'm mistaken, I apologize. 1.82 GAA or thereabouts is pretty f-ing good if you ask me. Whether we can keep that pace up without JFK's physical presence is another question.

The big missing piece is BP on the face-offs

And the players we have aren't? Take another look at the SHG in the Union game. I would say Malchuk's play was 80% face-off, 20% being in a good position in front of the net.

See face. See palm. See each come together in a swift and fluid motion. See FlagDUDE08 be chastised regarding facepalm usage.

Good point FD. I don't know the numbers, but overall we had an outstanding night in the FO circle in the Union game in Sc'tdy.

PP will be as good because Bailen is QBing it. The big missing piece is BP on the face-offs, he was awesome at winning the draw. I like the chemistry between Nick and Chase. They have that touch pass thing going. Bailen not only has a good hard shot but he gets it to the net. Bergin is getting better at that too. As SA said in the Ragord, we need guys to get the ugly goals. Hoping Bruts can get it going in that regard.

Pirri was good in the circle , but not awesome. He got tossed from the circle better than 1/2 the time for jawing at the opponent, the ref or both...thereby eliminating a shot at awesomeness. :D

IMO, we haven't been awesome in the circle since Alain St. Hilaire left. I do think Higgs has a chance to be very good in the circle.

Why does he say "Won't you get in trouble?" Because Mike Schafer did two years back for calling out the refs on how they called a playoff game, and given RPI was in that game, we'd know about what happened. Ken asked an honest question to the players regarding what they thought about the call, in which Coach stated there would be no comments, and a video was played. Taking the referee "to task" has been done enough for the past week and a half, although indirectly without mentioning his name. Also, how do you expect Mr. Schott to report on a rule which he, or anyone else in the general public for that matter, does not have a clear source as to what it states?

His article also says to e-mail him for comments, and he even gives his e-mail address. ;)
Hmmmmmmmmm Eddie Weaver Ouoted the rule in his TR article he must have put the work in to find out.....so i guess he scooped Ken Schott....or KS didn't want to know....What ever....BTW I do expect a repoter to find out the rule and follow up with a report...thats what reporters do...they don't usually leave it up to the general public.

Bedwetter

Please just drop the whole Schott/goal/suspension thing. It is getting very whiny, and it is putting a drag on this thread. I read the boards for insight on RPI hockey and to talk about it, not to hear personal attacks.

To change the subject - anyone here going to the Holiday Tourney? Thoughts on the games?

Absolutely-the last really good face off man we had was St Hilaire. Got to see him after his RPI days when he played down here for Trenton. He always had the knack. It is still one of the very much under appreciated parts of the game. And crucial during special teams play.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

FD08-Like your concentration on the special teams play. I have always felt it was what made the difference between a decent team and a very good team. Probably even more important now that the officials are calling more than they did back in my days. I am certainly no expert on what works but it seems to me any successful power play has to be fluid-has to change and adapt to what the defense is doing. We have firepower for the power play-we just have to figure out how to free up the main guys like Chase and Bailin to be in a position to take a clean shot with a little room. There aren't as many places in hockey to design specific plans up but the power play and short handed situations are ertainly 2 of those situations.

Wicked-here is what I said earlier about the power play-I am in no way saying it is poor-just agreeing that it is something that has to be very good for us to be a top team. And what I said about being fluid-movement on special teams is the key.

Re: RPI 2010-11 Part II: RPI, the Other Team, the Refs -- We're outnumbered 10 to 6.

I think we stand around too much. Union has a good power play because they are cycling around the front of the net. We don't have enough traffic which is an outgrowth of the standing around part. I like Vines, I think he will figure it out.

I know Vines coaches the PK, but I wasn't aware he coached the PP too...?

Agreed Hawthr. I for one haven't seen the conspiracy...Seth correctly called out the league, he knew exactly what he was doing and the potential consequences.

I will be attending the Tourney. I think UConn will be ready, as most teams are who enter our tourney.:D Minus Appert and JFK, York plays and RPI wins 3-1. :D

It is ok for AspyDad to call people names but if he gets called one he gets bent out of shape and offended....but moving on from the attention grabbers on the board, yeah I will be at the tournament and gave my thoughts on the weekend on the Tournament thread.

I will not be going. I will be staying in Syracuse to watch the women's team.
