Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

I don't expect any sulking either, I was just trying to think of what the players response might be.
As I said, I think that they will lead us in the tournament. :)

We have the perfect opportunity to make amends-we have played poorly in our own Tournament for about 7 years now-the Bentley game should tell us what kind of talent and heart this team has. I choose to think that we are a vastly improved team over the past 3 years-and will show it once we get back some of the walking wounded. On the scores thread for the Niagara game when RB posted the scratches for us, I had commented that we had a pretty good starting 6 sitting out-Take 6 players of that quality away from most teams and see if they can play a great game.

I totally agree with you Doc. It would be a huge confidence builder to win this tournament. I look for a big win on Friday, and then I will go up to Troy for the championship game. I would love to see RPI play LSSU.

LETS GO RED!!!

Re: RPI 2009 - 2010 Part II: I Believe in Seth Appert

So in other words, you're just determined to see Wednesday's game through the prism of "we won, or we lost" and completely disregard every single extenuating circumstance?

I walked away from the Sacred Heart game with more concern than I did from the Niagara game. I think most right thinking fans did too.

My original post expressed the disappointment of taking two healthy players out of an already wounded team. Add the fact that it is middle of the week bus trip and you have many things working against you. My initial point was if he wanted the WIN he would have put all the healthy players in and gone for the WIN but obviously that wasn't his primary concern- teaching the players a lesson was. You attack everyone who presents an opinion other than yours. The fans going to the games or listening and post here obviously want to see this program turn around and succeed. This team is very talented and once they all are healthy and play to their ability there will be no stopping them.

It is pretty clear that Appert was sending these players a message and reminding everyone on the team that playing time isn't guaranteed, it's a privilege and must be earned. He certainly seemed to do this last year and if anything it's earning Kevin Beauregard the reputation as "The Postman" since he's the guy suiting up to deliver these messages. I recall the game against UMass last year being used similarly. It would've helped immensely with teaching a lesson if the team had beaten Niagara but losing sends the message as well that playing poorly won't be tolerated and results in negative things for the team regardless.

Bentley being the opponent for the tournament serves to be a good thing for this team because the guys that were here last year should be good and ticked off about how they lost that game last year and now you'll (presumably) have two guys back in the lineup with a chip on their shoulder as well as getting the other injured players back in as well. Ideally, RPI should be set up to curbstomp these guys but we know it's never that easy.

And my point is this - two weeks from now, no one cares what happened in this game. However, two weeks from now, we've also got probably the most difficult home weekend of the season in Cornell and Colgate. Sitting good players is sometimes important IN ORDER to send a message and IN ORDER to teach a lesson. Which game would you rather that lesson come in? In a throwaway game you can definitely afford to lose, or in a league game against a top opponent when it costs you dearly?

The message to the guys is simple. If you aren't trying hard, you might as well not be playing, and if you're not playing, we lose. That's a pretty stark message that was delivered on Wednesday. Now they've got the message ahead of games that ARE important.

When I first read this, I realized that Coach was dead on with everything. I do admire that he is following in the footsteps of his late idol from Minnesota that had a couple weeks of success in RC's and my county of youth. I just hope that his players will take it the way he expects. Pat Cullen I expect will, from what RB has posted about a similar situation while in Indiana. Maybe AAG went to his gf or called up Matt, and I'm sure both told him to suck it up and play harder. He definitely showed last year that he's got it in him, let's see if it continues.

I trust Coach's judgement, and know that the players will be playing a lot harder.

See the quote to the left just underneath my screen name.

"RIGHT THINKING" you sound like Barrrack Obama. Is this a teachable moment?

issue two: you own a gun?

Tht is exactly what I expected when Appert benched those players.
However, the language used is stinging to say the least.
I expect to see AAG and Cullen carry this team in the tournament.
They have the tools and now they have to show it.
Of course, if the go sulk in a corner over this, they may not see the ice again this year.

They don't need to carry the team, just give it their all for the 32 seconds they are on the ice. That's what Appert expects from every kid -- not just these two. If you don't have expectations in an organization you ain't got squat.

Every kid is responsible for their preparation, effort and intensity, and Seth is telling them that they'll pay the price if the effort isn't there. No primadonna's in this locker room. Every kid earns his ice time. Personally, I find this approach rather refreshing.

Bottom line for RPI is that the 2nd and 3rd lines have to skate with intensity to create scoring chances and bury some pucks. We all know full well opponents will be gunning for the Peoples Line.

The online RPI directory lists all of the freshmen except Lee as Business and Management majors. Lee is a CE. I guess, at least on paper, D'Amigo isn't majoring in history.

Interesting-I find it constantly amazing that these boys can spend so much time with hockey and still maintain themselves in such high standing as students. RPI is just plain difficult to get through-when I applied my guidance counseler warned me that even gym was hard there. The fact that some of these fellows can major in engineering just astounds me.

A healthy time balance and a quick mind does wonders. What shocks me is Joe Juneau getting a 4.0 in Aero for 3 years, given his introduction to an English-speaking location.

It is difficult, however it is also well worth it. We're much better off after our experiences in Troy.

I know I am. Medical School was basically a walk in the park after my years at RPI.

I wonder if the same can be said for Matthieu at Laval.

RPI shapes the leaders of tomorrow. And sometimes, they show it off "today".
