Does anyone remember how RPI did five years ago when the 1985 team was last honored? (I know that I could look it up. I figured that someone remembers something besides for the ice storm. :) )

Quick search yields this:

"Hockey champs honored: At this year’s Big Red Freakout, Rensselaer welcomed back members of the 1985 men’s national hockey championship team to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their NCAA victory. The 1985 squad was honored on the ice before a sold-out crowd Feb. 12 prior to the start of the men’s ice hockey game against Brown. As a bonus, the Engineers defeated Brown 3-2."

I have a feeling I've probably seen half the people that post on our thread (or more) and never realized who they were. Probably talked to some without realizing it too. Also with us there were GoDanGo and JCrawford. I'll have to start posting the weekend schedule in advance and start saying hi to people. Maybe stand up in the middle of the room and go "Excuse me! Does anyone here post on USCHO?" :D

That's not quite how I read these trades. Phaneuf is one of the most talented young D in the game - thought of as a franchise type D a year or two ago. The Giguere trade was an attempt to find a decent goalie. Seems as though Toronto is trying to improve immediately as opposed to cutting salaries and bringing kids up.

The thing with Toronto is that they've already given away their draft choices this year in the Kessel trade. Bringing kids up and writing off the season doesn't buy them anything in terms of their draft position. In fact, it helps their divisional rival. I think they are trying to improve now, win a few games and keep the fans happy.

I see it the same way-I think Toronto is a tough town to play hockey in-the fans expect to win and they want it NOW. The newspapers there cover hockey as fully as anywhere except perhaps Montreal-and the team is scrutinized constantly. I don't see any of these as affecting the status of D'Amigo immediately. Just MHO.:)

OK...I had 3 glasses of wine at Red Lobster before the game so I forgot about this....SA left the bench after the game and went into the body of the stands with the fist pump!!!! He is becoming a Rock Star...unless you were watching the entire time, you didn't see it...it's almost like animal house's Otter meets Lou Lamorillo in a genetic hockey bouillabaisse!!! :)

If you want your son to see any playing time maybe you should stop referring to the coach as Otter :eek: :) !

Those of us that have been following RPI hockey for decades would never want a coach that is even part Lou Lamoriello. I still remember him engaged with Mike Addesa in a vehement argument at the end of the handshake line after we beat Providence in the early '80s. Apparently Lou wasn't happy that RPI was starting to pull in some of the studs that ultimately led to an NCAA championship and made a remark that Mike found offensive.

If they were trying to win now, they'd have loaded up on forward depth. Instead they've traded all of their high scorers (aside from Kessel of course) away to Calgary. Instead, look for young guys like Tyler Bozak and Viktor Stalberg and Christian Hanson to get called on more from the AHL to carry the weight up front and gain experience.

Yes, they're more than loaded in goal and on defense, but they're very young up front and are taking their very best out of the AHL to play in the NHL. One way or another, they're going to refill their ranks in the AHL - let's just hope Burke doesn't sweeten the pot for Jerry D'Amigo to leave now to help a woefully thin farm team.

Interesting statistic: This is the first time we've had a winning record in January since 2003-04. :eek:

There was a gentleman sitting in front of me wearing a signed Nathan Marsters jersey.
I didn't want to approach him about it, but it certainly kept Marsters in my memory for the entire game.
