Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

Brutlag brings the defensive component to the forward task. He is perfectly suited for PK assignments and, if they keep at forward, will settle into the offensive mindset with a little time. I also liked him at D, tho'; so no matter where they use him, he gets my vote!

I like him as a player -but I have always felt he was just a little too small for defense in the ECAC. I think coach SA has found the niche for him and expect him to only get better up front.

Not stirring anything up here but just asking out loud.

Merriam against Brown?

Merriam against Brown?

We have to come out with our best for every game remaining-each game will be competitive and decided by the slimmest of margins. If you feel comfortable with Merriam in this game then that is a good choice. Personally I start York but would not hesitate to change if things start out poorly. I am glad we have 2 goalies who we can call on down the stretch.

I'm good either way. Merriam was a nervous wreck before the GLI championship game and we haven't seen him since. He proved against BU that he's a gamer, Brown might be a good chance for him to get some confidence back and lets York rest up for Yale. The only concern I have is that we do need every point we can get, and if Merriam is starting against Brown we've still got to be sure to get those 2 points.

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

We have a tendency to play to the level of our opponents, as has been the case for many years. So for Brown we will play down. The message, at this point of the season that SA would give by starting Merriam is that it is indeed an easy game. IMO, he shouldn't send that message.

Then again, the team could play harder with Merriam in goal.

I don't think there's a rink atmosphere on the planet that's further out of phase with playing Michigan State at JLA than playing Brown in Meehan Auditorium.

cold. empty. echo chamber.

I agree- start all of your best players. Put your players in the right postions and lines. Play to win. This team has shown they have what it takes to beat top rated teams. Give them the tools and let them do their jobs. No more talk or side shows-the time is now for this team to take control of their destiny.

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

Its "go" time in the ECAC. 10 league games left...talk is cheap. RPI needs to tighten their chin straps and start putting teams in the rear view mirror.

I say York gets the keys to the bus. Should he stumble, Seth won't hesitate to make a change.

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

York is playing his best hockey of the year. We need at least 2 points on the weekend and this is the best chance to get it. Stick with the hot hand.

I hope that the only chances Merriam gets to play the rest of the way are in games that we have a 5 goal lead in the middle of the 3rd. Otherwise let's bring this thing home.

I'll be at the echo chamber on Friday with my son. Finally we get to see D'Amigo play. My son is really looking forward to it.

I agree that we should stick with York for this weekend. We need all the points we can get to try and get home ice for the playoffs. Would I like a first round bye sure, but I would take home ice.

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

I said it once before, and I'll say it again: This guy has probably been the most underrated player on our team. Though Marty O'Grady and now Malchuk are giving him a run for his money, I still think it's true. But this is a good thing. Let Polacek and the freshman line take all of the tough D, and Paul is right there to bury it. He is definitely the completion of the triple threat.

I'm glad to see as of late, he's finally getting a little press.

I would agree that we should stick with York; he's been doing well as of late, but it hasn't been just him, it's also been our D-core. Keep blocking shots.

I don't know if I'd wish that upon Merriam, but he has definitely had quite a few good non-conference games, especially against BU. It's definitely important to have your other goalie get some playing time in so that his game can develop. I don't know if Allen would be as improved and as good as he is now if he didn't play the NC games last year (including the TV shallacking by Miami) or in the playoffs. Maybe that's a sign of his character, that he always tried to get better, and then Coach gave him the nod against Dartmouth. Did Allen play any of the league games last year in the regular season?

Your son (and you) is in for a real treat. D'Amigo is fun to watch. Especially when he decides he's going to go coast-to-coast (though perhaps he's grown out of that now that he's done it twice). Actually, all of the freshmen are a treat. This is a fun team to watch, whether or not you've been following them as of late.

Where did this goalie question come from?
We are trying to finish as high as possible in the ECAC. We are looking for a bye. This is no time to experiment. York is the #1 goaltender, and he will start every game that he is capable of starting.
Merriam is a fine goalie, but this year he is #2, and I am sure that Seth Appert has made that clear.
We will be going with our best the rest of the year. JMO

I think the question arose upon the possibility of Brom being "an easy team". They're just as important as Clarkson, Yale, Cornell, or any other team in the league, IMO, because they're worth a potential 4 points: 2 at home, and 2 on the road. Sure there might be odds based upon each team's level of play, but any gambler would tell you odds don't mean much in sports. Longshots are probably the easiest to come by, especially in this league.

I suspect that Merriam knew that he would be the backup when he was recruited. I doubt that SA promised him more than the shot he has received.

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

This discussion really shouldn't be this heated. It was just a food for thought question thrown out there.
