Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

When Time Warner is broadcasting, video review is in place. I think the rule probably says (for this year) that whenever possible, video review should be in place. Next year, it is mandatory.
FD08: Wicked, my hubster and I all had a birdseye view and it was clear the puck went in before the net was moved. The real controversy should have been whether the whistle to stop play had been blown prior to the puck going in as it seemed the ref might have lost sight of the puck...

Re: RPI 2009-10 Part IV: The Boys are Back in Town

Hitting from behind was never an issue in hockey until PLAYERS started turning their backs while along the boards. Coaches used to preach "finishing" checks. It was also a very poor choice as a player with the puck along the boards to put yourself in a bad situation by "facing" the boards. At present, players turn their backs while along the boards with the puck because coaches teach this tactic as "puck protection". Now, if you are the aggressive checker, do not finish your check, because you are the responsible one if the player with the puck turns his back.....not the player turning their back. The infraction has become a "judgement" call on behalf of the officials...what is boarding...and what is a hit from behind.

I watched the game on Time Warner, and after watching the replay a couple of times, the puck was quite visible, and was completely across the line well before the net was knocked off. I don't like the fact that it happened, but I would rather not win, lose, nor tie because of a messed up call. Take the time to get it right, we can always seal the deal in overtime, which we had a chance to do with the power play, and did not convert.

As for the CFB you had mentioned earlier, the players turn away more often than not in college just to draw the 5 minutes, rather than a simple 2 for boarding. See the hit almost directly after D'Amigo was hit. It's sad, it's cheap, but it happens.

Four points separate the top eight teams. All of them still in the race for home ice weekend off. We might need this point at the end of the season. At least their density ( back to the future) is in their own hands. Couple of wins this weekend will put them in a good position. York has only given up five goals in the past four games. How long has Brutlag been on O? Mere coincidence? Merth needs a weekend off?

Actually, 8 in the past 5.

Merth was not the D Appert was referrring to that failed to do his job at the end of the game. I think they need to put Brutlag on the checking line. After watching him for 2.5 years now I think he has a hard time with the puck unless he is in open ice. He is fast and works very hard and is offensively/defensively minded so that checking line would be a perfect fit. I did not think he added anything to D'Amigo and Polacek line. I still think that spot is Helfich's and if the coaches are still playing mind games with him it should stop now because the season is coming to a close and he needs to be in the mix on that line. I loved Kerrins and Pirri and O'Grady together- I think they compliment each other very well. Regarding the Harvard game-completely out played Harvard and should have come away with the win. When Harvard pulled their goalie it looked like we stayed way back again hoping to hang on-kind of like the way we use to play the penalty kill. Go for the win. It seemed like they did the same thing in OT. I have to say from watching this team lately that was probably a coaching decision.

Maybe the team reads RC's posts and knows that we need three points in every home series. :D

Though I too hope that Helfrich has earned his way back onto Polacek's line, I don't agree with your assessement of Brutlag's play at forward. He works hard and has been strong with the puck, coming out from behind the goal with it at times this past weekend.

There were times against Dartmouth that he was our best forward. He hustled, hit and made plays. He is a nice addition up front and would be an asset on any of the top three lines.

I like Pirri, Kerins and O'Grady together. I think that Brutlag with Cullen and Malchuck might also work. Vasel and Watts could combine with AAG or Rabbani for a nice momentum line. Watts is a real asset on the Penalty Kill.

Was it seven goals in the last five? Empty netter against Union? Point about Brutlag is the defense seems to be better off when he plays on a wing. I would also like Helfrich back with Polacek.

We must have been watching two different Dartmouth games. Yes he definitely hustles, hits and works very hard but offensively (meaning creating plays-continuing to keep the play alive in the offensive zone-working in tight spaces offensively-finding open guys etc) he did not add to that line. I love his grit and competitive nature but he looks lost in that postition-I don't blame him though since he has been playing D his entire career. He would be so much more effective on that checking line which would seem more of a natural position for him if he isn't playing D. It cannot be easy being switched like that and the best thing for him is to put him in a position which closely match his skills-Personally I believe that is the defensive/offensive line. JMO

He played forward as a HS freshman.

Brutlag brings the defensive component to the forward task. He is perfectly suited for PK assignments and, if they keep at forward, will settle into the offensive mindset with a little time. I also liked him at D, tho'; so no matter where they use him, he gets my vote!

I think that your first sentence is much better than the converse, which is what was happening when Bryan was on the blue line. So many times he would stray up, coach would yell for him to stay home, an inexperienced forward would have to slide into his place, and issues would arise from there. Granted he is very O-minded, so perhaps forward is the best place for now. I bet it threw Q-Pac and Princeton for a bit of a loop when they saw it for the first time.

On another topic, no votes in the polls this week. I think for once, after looking at some of the fairing of the other teams, I'm happy that we're out of the limelight, as it has seemed to be a bit of a curse to get up there. Stay under the radar, keep going one step (game) at a time, and we should be just fine.
