Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

I thought CC was better on Friday than they were tonight in terms of overall team play. They certainly were deserving of a point this weekend, but it probably should have come on Friday.

I agree. I think it was their first game this year on the smaller sheet. They tried to do their typical long passes and it didn't work on the shorter ice. DU's kill was the big difference maker of the weekend. CC came in at 30% (which is mind boggling) and only got one PP goal all weekend.

There was a lot that got me upset about the refs tonight (yes PS I agree that good teams find a way to win in spite of the Todd Anderson's of the world) but the thing that tweaked me the most was when Anderson got all unprofessional with Steve Miller. He was staring him down on the bench for like 15 seconds when the play had started again. Completely unprofessional.

I missed the first period tonight due to FSN (and due to the fact that I was at Matthews Arena anyway), but for the five periods plus OT I saw this weekend, I thought things were very even. Last night could have just as easily been a 2-1 win for CC, but DU's top line was a difference maker. Tonight actually had a chance to be a DU blowout if they had converted on their PP near the end of the second period. But instead, CC killed the penalty and then battled back in the third. It was a great series, no matter what the points scenario played out to be.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

I think the CC players would probably tell you they were a little lucky tonight to steal the point on the road. Sure they worked hard for it in the third, but I thought DU had much more sustained offense tonight and carried the play, while CC was more opportunistic. Friday, I thought CC outplayed DU slightly and lost, while Saturday, DU outplayed CC slightly and tied.

This was a great series, and both teams should be in the NCAAs when all is said and done.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

What a game!

Never thought Testwuide had the finesse that he displayed tonight.

This is mid-season, and I think both these teams will be in the WCHA final 5, and beyond.

Can't remember a more entertaining game to watch.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

Scott Owens pretty much echoed my earlier assessment of Saturday's game in the USCHO game recap:

“It was a huge point; it was more than just a point in the standings for us,” said Owens. “It’s a character point. Were we a real good hockey team tonight? No, not necessarily. Were they pretty good? Yeah, their forwards were unbelievable tonight.”

Translation: DU outplayed us, but we (CC) took advantage of some nice gifts.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

I'm very happy for Mike Testwuide, but it is hard to believe he has ten goals already this season. He is proving to be one of CC's best team captain's in many years for his on and off ice leadership.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

For those who want to watch last night's game again, it is being rebroadcast this morning on FCS Central at 11:30 AM ET, 10:30 AM CT, 9:30 AM MT and 8:30 AM PT.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

It was neat to watch the handshake line on TV... especially considering just 5minutes earlier when the scoreboard sais 0:00, it was a wresteling match out there and not a hockey game. In particular, I noticed how Testwuide gave a little "hug" and huge smiles and a few comments to a couple of the DU Seniors - Brookwell for one. We always think "rivalry" with these teams... but it's safe to say a couple of those guys have done some hanging-out together over the years when J.P. was still in town. That's pretty neat

When I was at DU as a student in the dark ages of the mid 80s, DU and CC players 'hung out' all the time, especially at fraternity parties, house parties and local bars. I got to know CC players like Ken Filbey, Marty Wakelyn, Brent Gropp and Doug Lidster to name a few, and they all grew up with the BC-based players from DU. Ditto for a number of players from North Dakota, Wisconsin, etc. Elite hockey players are a small world. I would imagine that most the current DU and CC players know each other pretty well, especially the upperclassmen.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

Overall I thought it was a good weekend for CC. It was disappointing to get only 1 point but they competed with one of the best teams in country and showed that they are for real right now. Going forward the schedule is very difficult so we will see if they can keep it going. I thought the freshman on both sides played pretty well for their first time in this rivalry as well.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

Two fine games played by two great teams. Was glad only handshakes took place at the line. Pretty hard when you're a player to set aside the emotion that did happen just a few minutes earlier. Well done by both teams.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

I can't help feeling like Sat. night was a loss for DU and a win for CC. I'm still shaking my head about that penalty shot:mad: So is Donovan in the doghouse with Gwoz for that? Did he avoid a goal by doing it? Uggggg, I felt so good going into that third period. We came so close to putting that game away, 5-2 would have been insurmountable. Oh well, I guess three points is nothing to be ashamed of, but oh so close

Oh and one more thing, did CC have a 5 on 3 for 2 whole minutes? How did that happen? (is that when they scored their 3rd goal?)

Amazingly enough cc did not score during the 5 on 3. Glasser and I think Wrenn were called on the same play

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

The Penalty Shot was not only the correct call, it was an automatic call, as rules require it when nets are dislodged intentionally with under a minute left in a game.

At the end of the day, good goalies save 75% of penalty shots, and Chevy missed both the penalty shot and the shorty breakaway to Testwuide, so that was certainly a disappointing performance for Chevy. He probably should have saved at least one of the two.

I thought Anderson reffed a pretty decent series - the only call I really questioned was the missed injury whistle when Wiercioch went down hurt and CC scored their second goal, when they play should have been blown dead when the puck was in the DU offensive zone. The ref said Weircioch was trying to get up, but they blew that call.

Anyway, CC played well enough in the series to earn at least one point, and a good case could be made that CC outplayed us by a little bit on Friday. I though DU was the better team on Saturday and CC was a little lucky to get a point. On balance, be happy with the three points for the Pios and the leg up to get the Gold Pan back. This was a series that was pretty even over the six periods.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

I'll take 3 points any weekend of the year. Home or away against any opponent.

The Penalty Shot was not only the correct call, it was an automatic call, as rules require it when nets are dislodged intentionally with under a minute left in a game.

An automatic goal call was also possible, as the dislodging of the net occured as the puck was shot into the net -- if a goal is "obvious and imminent" the officials can award a goal. I'm kinda surprised they didn't do that.

Re: Rocky Mountain Showdown! DU and CC!!

This comes a little late, but there is a very good web video on the DU/CC rivalry with interesting player interviews from both teams.

In the video, there are also some great still shots of the old Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, which in the 1950s, had exotic animal heads from Broadmoor Owner Spencer Penrose's African Safaris on the arena walls. The animal heads came down when the arena was enlarged in the 1960s, and the arena itself was torn down in 1994 when the Broadmoor Hotel wanted to expand.
