I am more interested in hockey than rivalry smack talk.

I think this is going to be a tight series of one goal games either way.

DU has not faced a 31% power play this year, and Howe is doing a very nice job keeping the games close and giving CC a chance to win every time out. CC is finally getting production from players who didn't produce much in prior years, and this a very experienced Tiger team in terms of seniors.

For Denver, I think this is a Pioneer team that has played its best hockey against big WCHA rivals this year, and as a top 5 team, the Pioneers bring the best goaltender in college hockey to the party, as well as a deep and experienced group of talent that can play with the best of them.

The key to winning this weekend will be the ability of Cheverie to be effective against the CC power play. If Chevy can keep CC to two goals each night or less, I think DU has a great shot to do well. If CC is able to pile up PPGs, DU will struggle.

One weakness that CC has this year is 5 on 5. They need to produce in these situations this weekend in order to be successful. Most people might think that the pressure is on DU this weekend to perform at a high level but I think CC has some pressure to prove that they are for real. Not to take anything away from the teams that they have played so far this season but DU will be the best team that CC has seen all season so far.

These are the games where the big time players need to shine; Chevy, Rock, Ruegs, Colborne, Maiani, Big Ostrow, Martin, Wiercioch, etc. The past few years CC had Chad Rau slice and dice DU during these games. It is time for some payback. It is probably good that DU faced UND and Minny in the past few weeks so the frosh have gotten a feel for some of the rivalry games. It is a shame the DU students won't be there for the Saturday night game at DU.

As far as I know CC comes to the Friday game with a full deck of players able to play. No one that I know of is injured or ill at this time. Ryan Lowery was ill and did not suit for last Saturday's game but is fine now.

Paul Kelly, the newly appointed executive director of College Hockey Inc. who has an office in Boston will be in attendance for both DU/CC games this weekend.

Show him how we play Tigers!!

I think that's been a big challenge throughout college hockey the last couple of years and especially this year. If a team has a decent power play and PK, AND can score 5 on 5, that team will go very far.

Back when DU was purely a party school (I'm an alum) we used to say "You can't spell drunk or drugs without DU" and were proud of it!

Gwoz's press conference from yesterday on Pioneer Vision. It is free and starts at about the 16 minute mark after hoops coach Joe Scott. Gwoz looks less than pleased after last Saturday's performance and I am sure the boys have been skating quite briskly this week. He is not happy with DU's recent performances against CC and I would expect the boys to come out on fire this weekend.

It's very cold in Denver today and supposed to be all week. That might be good for both teams, because Friday night at Magness Arena there's a Mixed Martial Arts Fighting event. Hopefully the cold, dry air will keep the ground cold so the ice is in good shape for Saturday. The ice was crappy for the NoDak series - and there was Basketball game a day or so before that.

DU has already beaten CC once this week. They have gotten a committment from highly touted Beau Bennett of Penticton in the BCHL. His final two choices were CC and DU which he both visited in October. DG's Blog has lots of info on him.
