40 years ago tonight Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash. one of mookie's earliest memories was watching the funeral on tv.
A Great, Great Man taken too soon.

One of the players I really wish I could have seen play. And imagine how much more good he could have done had he not died so young.

If you haven't read David Maraniss' book about him - read it. Very good.

I was a Baltimore fan, I hated him I especially hate that Pointer Sisters song, "We are Family"

My favorite player as a baseball crazy kid. The player I idolized and pretended to be in little league and on the sandlot. I was devastated by his untimely, tragic death. I feel very fortunate to have seen Roberto Clemente play. Among the absolute best to ever play in my view.

I'm assuming that you do realize that the We Are Family Pirates were 7 years after Clemente's death, correct?

I watched him gun down adventurous Cubs runners at the plate at Wrigley many times. What somebody once said about Joe Louis applies to Bobby: "He's a credit to his race. . .the human race."
