What a great effort, beating the top scoring RIT team in their own barn. Congratulations to the NATIONAL CHAMPION NORWICH CADETS!.Special congratulations to the seniors who have been with the team for its entire history, going from newcomers as a varsity team to national champs in 4 seasons.
Unbelievable, but true!
I hope this pushes the men to repeat as national champs next weekend.
I also hope the video streaming is better next weekend. It was 2-3 minutes behind the whole way. I listened to WDEV but watched on NCAA.com
gustavus didn't even show up today...is it time for the third place game to go?? Hjelm with 7 penalties on the weekend 5 checking...is she a detriment with that despite her scoring ability?
I, too think that Gojackets is reacting to the fact that the West went 0-2 again this year. There is no question in my mind that GAC fired every bullet they had on Saturday, they did not mail it in. They got 30 shots on net and had equal or greater offensive zone time. The Gusties belonged on the ice with these three Eastern teams. But I think in the end GAC and UWRF take turns coming to these games after spending four months beating up on lesser teams. They just don't get the opportunity to play in games where the opponent is the favorite. .
Its mostly a reaction to that fact. I'd agree with you on Gustavus. This MIAC for the most part is not a good conference from maybe the 3rd place team on down. Besides GAC, the 4 teams that were in the MIAC tournament went 6-13-1 out of conference, 4-13-1 if you take out Concordia's two wins over Finlandia. St Thomas was 0-4-1, St Olaf was 0-5. Some teams have had more success against Gustavus in the MIAC over the past year or two, but I think it has more to do with the fact that the coaches are finally coming up with a way of defending that system...and the other teams really have to get pumped to beat the Gusties at this point.
There have been 3 NCHA teams to the Frozen Four, not just River Falls who have only been there once.
Gustavus' track record at the Frozen Four is pretty awful. They are now 1-7 in Frozen Four games. Their only win was a 3-1 win over Plattsburgh in '05. I'm just getting really tired of Gustavus going out there and sucking it up, especially after all the talk about bring it out west and see what happens last year, and they go throw up a big old goose egg. They've been to the FF 4 times now, they play eastern teams more than anyone else in the west and they can't get it done.
Stevens Point at least is 3-3 at the Frozen Four and the only west team to make the championship game...of course they haven't been back since Ninneman took over and I don't see them getting back anytime soon![]()
Yes congratulations Dr. Leclerc went out in style 2 goals and a national championship...wait maybe we'll see her next year...who likes to ruin a good streak?
Women's hockey deserves better reffing than what they got this weekend, there were so many bad calls or no calls. Somebody eventually be hurt. Blair and Everett are a joke and disgrace to officiating. So many times all weekend they would look at obvious penalties and not make calls. They obviously were the weakest refs, as they got the consolation game, after being reviewed by the committee on Friday. They are awful. Let's hope the NCAA opens their eyes. They did not favor any team, they just consistently stink game in and game out, and the DIII championship weekend deserves much better.

I agree. I was there to witness - to say that the refs were abysmal would be giving them much too much credit. Early whistles on loose pucks, countless blatant body checks and out right dirty play not called against one of the players (who shall remain namelesss) on the Gusties. You name it. These young women deserve better.

I must (sadly) note that the Gusties defeated the Polar Bears 2-1 in Pine Valley on 3/9/2002 in the third place game at the first women's DIII championship.
Well hopefully your not referring to Hjelm as her 5 checking penalties on the weekend shoudl be a record. I'd say I saw a lot of inconsistency. Hjelm touched someone and they'd fall down arm goes up...a Norwich player would run into a Gustie player and knock them over and nothing. There were so many times when bodies were flying around and no calls, but anytime Hjelm touched someone she got called for it.
Many thanks to RIT and Rochester for providing a great final four experience. Love the pep band and screaming students and passionate support for the team and game!
That's precisely to whom I was referring. Sorry, but she should probably have had another 5 called against her during the game against Middlebury. Really, in my opinion, she should have been tossed from the game. It's one thing if it's inadvertent, but she engaged in blatant body checking - numerous times.
I didn't see that game, but did notice that one of hers resulted in a penalty shot...what was that all about?
she was a step or two behind Ugalde of Midd, in stride breaking in alone, and threw herself to the puck and took out puck/Ugalde about 2-3 feet off crease from a side angle (not completely from behind) -- enough to warrant a PS but could also have been a non-call without much argument either (suspect that the refs had her number by then and she was going to get the Chara treatment for being big and brassy even if she was just trying to play all out and tough -- not conceding anything). Ugalde buried it on the PS (while skating 30mph) -- thing of beauty.
